Macadamia storage

#1

I buy my macadamia’s from traders joes, they seem to be the only place i can seem to get them dry roasted and a decent size bag for like $9.
The problem i have is storage. I put them in a plastic quart container that our wonton soup came in, fairly air tight.
after a few weeks they seem to taste kinda off and not the same.
Can they go bad??? how does everyone else store?

I get 10oz bags of Archer Farms brand from Target, at a cost of $9.99. Not as good of a price as Costco, which has them for 25% less per ounce, but the quality of Archer Farms is much higher than Costco’s, so I find the higher price worth it. I just store them in the ziplock container they come in. I go through 10 ounces much faster than it would take them to spoil :frowning:.

What is the quantity of the package from Trader Joe’s? I don’t generally shop there but they do exist around here.

I buy those same macadamia nuts from Trader Joe’s. I store them by rolling the bag down and clipping it to keep air out and that seems to work well. I suspect the problem with an air tight container is that you’re trapping a lot of air inside it as the volume is going down.

The lids for those containers usually have a tiny hole to allow steam to escape so anything you store won’t be airtight. I reuse things like pickle jars etc. Different sizes. Use for homemade mayo, coconut milk, Caesar dressing, nuts. Wash really good with hot soapy water. Soak and scrape off label and glue. Hope this helps!

thanks, not sure of the size until i buy again. will post size and price next time i buy. are the target ones dry roasted?

#6

Yes, dry roasted. The package shows ingredients of “Macadamia Nuts (Dry Roasted), Sea Salt”.

Wow- this is a problem I never have. Macadamia nuts last about 36 hours tops in my house.

But for other nuts (that I use sporadically) I often freeze small batches.

I wonder if they can be frozen.

I keep all nuts in the Fridge and this seems to keep them fresh. I think I heard Carrie Brown mention this once on a podcast. Because of the high fat content they can go rancid if not stored properly.

I have a food saver vacuum i use for my meats. it came with a container that is hard plastic like that i can suck the air out of. I may try and use that for my nuts…well i mean the macadamias…lol

I get mine from Costco.
Try using a ziploc bag. Your container might have residual “flavors” from the wonton soup

(Ernest) #12

Please let us know how that feels…LOL!!

I keep macadamias and pecans in the fridge or yes, they go rancid.

You, sir, have a dirty mind!

(So you’re going to fit right in, lol!) :bacon:

(Ernest) #15

I don’t see how you guys have macadamia nuts go rancid.
That idea is so foreign to me.

(Liz ) #16

LOL I guess they are not everyone’s Kryptonite

I buy Macadamias in bulk. 25lbs seems to be the best price/value point. I buy raw and store them in the freezer and only have enough unfrozen to last 1-2 weeks. Lasts for years.

Some of you may have never had a really fresh macadamia, because many of the ones I’ve seen in stores are extremely stale. The difference in taste is amazing.

I want to be like you some day!
