Lutefisk

Nice. As long as you don’t have to eat lutefisk  @Henna

What was your moment, when you absolutely had to change?

Heeeeeeeeey!
Lutefisk is a delicacy here in Minnesoooota, the Scandinavia of the USA…

Lol,lutefisk when made right is amazing. Not that jelly crap I have seen in the USA. Lutefisk, lettsalt, kviting, skrei, all cod but when made proper (and I do make it proper) is some of the best fish you will ever eat. Bonus!!! It’s all served with melted butter and bacon! How could you not like that, lol.

So, as I know nothing about lutefisk are you saying it is basically brined cod?

(Henna Selnes) #5

Ohh good god no,(full body shake) it’s made and preserved from lute, ash?? In English I think is the word. It’s the stuff soap is made out of. (Not helping my case) lol.

(Arlene) #6

Are you saying lutefisk is made with lye somehow? This has me curious. Guess I’m going to have to do some research now.

(Henna Selnes) #7

This is salted to get the lute out, wait 15 min or so then rinse under cold water, repeat, then repeat a third time. Cover and bake for half hour until it is firm, then serve with butter and bacon.

Yes that’s it! Oh man it good. Brenda is right,it is a delicacy. We eat only at jule Christmas.

Ugh. It is the stuff of my nightmares.[quote=“farmgirl, post:69, topic:6922, full:true”]

Yes. Yes it is. Not completely sure of the process though.[quote=“Henna, post:66, topic:6922, full:true”]

I hope it is different than the stuff my great grandmother served. Fish jelly. Yeah. Ugh. Now butter and bacon…I’m in to try it again made that way at least.

Brined cod, might not be good but my grandmother used to pickle herring and smelt. It was really good.

I saw some lutefisk in the store a few days ago. I think you inspired me to try it now. Thanks for the photos and instruction.

(Henna Selnes) #12

Haha, pickled herring is just, part of life here. Herring in sour cream and onions is my husbands favorite. Herring and mustard sauce. Tomato sauce and herring. Pepper Korn herring. I am more of a pepper makeral food person. Fried of course!

If you do choose to try,I can walk you thru, from cutting to plate! Done right,it’s a real treat.

Yep. Lutefisk needs it’s own topic.
Split it.
