Low-pressure like ear popping?

(Genevieve Biggs) #1

I just finished a 3-day fast. Since about day two, my ears have been popping periodically like when I’m on an airplane. Could this be due to low blood pressure? This does not happen normally. Thank you.

Not likely due to blood pressure or the fast. The sensation of ear popping is caused by gasses moving in and out of the middle ear via the eustachian tube. There are a lot of other factors that can be in play, such as minor irritation of the nasopharynx (the back of your throat, way up behind your nose) d/t allergies, an oncoming cold, or post-nasal drip, or recent travel that had changes in elevation (it doesn’t actually take a lot of elevation change to cause our ears to pop).

*disclaimer: Not a doctor, but did run hyperbaric chambers for a decade and we pay special attention to ear popping.
