Published on Apr 16, 2015 Sugar is the new evil in our battle for health, but how much of it is hiding inside seemingly healthy foods like yoghurt and cereal?

It’s a lot more than you think - director and writer of That Sugar Film Damon Gameau decided to use his own body as a scientific experiment, consuming 40 teaspoons of sugar a day for 60 days.

He didn’t consume sweets or fizzy drinks, but the so-called ‘healthy options’. The impact on his body was both frightening and remarkably fast.

This morning he joined Paul Henry to discuss the experiment – he says that the biggest surprise of the whole experience was when he removed the sugar from his diet.

"After 60 day of no sugar, I turned around fatty liver disease, pre-diabetes, heart disease and lost 90 percent of the weight [I had put on], all in two months" says Mr Gameau.

He describes his film as “the Super Size Me version of sugar”, but that the catch is he doesn’t actually eat any junk food.

He says that was consuming “flavoured milk, sports drinks, vitamin waters and juices – some juices have more sugars in them than Coca-Cola”.

“The first 12 days of the experiment I put on 3kg, which was kind of the big first alarm,” says Mr Gameau. After 18 days he developed fatty liver disease, which was “when the whole film went to another level”.

One month in he had gained 8.5kg.

That Sugar Film is screening at the New Zealand International Film Festival Autumn Showcase on Thursday April 16 and Sunday April 19 at the Civic Theatre, Auckland.
