Keytone Fluctuation and Fasting

(Todd Gamel) #1

I just finished my second water fast. This time I planned for thee and a half days (88 hours), and wanted to fast while I was at work, since my first fast was performed while I was off work. I will say that this was a great experience. I never felt any real hunger pangs and I feel like I could have probably gone longer, but since I just fasted two weeks ago for 2 ½ days I had already planned to end my fast today when I woke up this morning (Monday July 16 @ 0430). Eventually I want to try a 7 day fast, but for now I am happy with my results.

First, I want to say that I did not weigh myself during this fast. Why?, because I was not concerned with weight loss, but rather the affects the fast has on of my blood sugars. During my previous fast I continued to take my metformin and by days two and three my blood sugars had dropped below 60 (Day 2: 57, Day3: 59). While I felt no ill effects during that fast, this time I decided to fast without taking my metformin. My lowest blood sugar during this fast was 68 (3.8 mmol/L). So here are my numbers.

July 13, 2018 @ 0400
Ketones: 0.4 mmol/L
Blood Sugar: 94 (5.2 mmol/L)

July 14, 2018 @ 0430
Ketones: 1.7 mmol/L
Blood Sugar: 81 (4.5 mmol/L)

July 15, 2018 @ 0400
Ketones: 2.0 mmol/L
Blood Sugar: 74 (4.1 mmol/L)

July 15, 2018 @ 2000
Ketones: 4.1 mmol/L
Blood Sugar: 68 (3.8 mmol/L)

July 16, 2018 @ 0500
Ketones: 2.4 mmol/L
Blood Sugar: 74 (4.1 mmol/L)

During my next fast, I am going to get start taking my ketone and blood sugar levels when I first wake up, and then 12 hours later to determine if I can detect a specific ketone fluctuation pattern. Again the only thing I have during my fast is water and black coffee, so there is nothing else to could interfere with my readings, but to get more scientific, I need to test at consistent times.

I have read that ketone production is generally lower in the morning, and higher in the afternoon. This does make some sense as we know that glucose production increases in the early morning due to the dawn effect (0200 – 0800) which is usually when I get up to workout before heading to work. So I will just have to wait and see what my results are during my next fast. So, has anyone here tracked ketones during the morning and then in the afternoon on the same day while fasting, or am I just weird?
