Keto women over 50

Hi Jacqui! Yes keep calm! Even though the scales might not be moving in the direction you’d like in the beginning, good things are happening inside that you can’t see. It only makes sense doesn’t it? When you gain weight it starts in the inside and after a while it shows on the outside. Then those scales will move in the direction you’ve been working for. Be patient, listen to what your body is telling you. If you are doing keto and have transitioned into using fat for fuel your cravings should disappear and the amount of food you want or will be able to eat will drastically reduce. When you feel satiated just push the dish away. You don’t have to finish it.

I suppose what my partner and I are doing would be called “lazy keto”. We don’t count fat grams, carbs, protein etc anymore as by now we have a good idea what’s what. We go more by how we feel. If I feel “fuzzy headed”, or tired I know I have to ingest more fat. Avocado is my go to but my NY cheesecake works too! Anyway, hang in there. Relax and enjoy your keto journey and take pleasure in knowing that you can eat bacon, cheese, meat and all the things you were told that are bad for you and they will do you good and not harm.

Hi, I am just 4 weeks in and I too lost 8 pounds quickly but nothing since. I am considering an extended fast, as I already eat a roughly 18/6 schedule. I am waiting patiently for an increase in energy, but I do feel more alert and less foggy brained. I hope fasting will work. I am so used to nothing working for me that this is the first time in about ten years that I have tried to lose weight. I really am looking forward to the weight coming off, but I have had it for at least 20 years so I consider it to be stuck to me!! :):grinning:
I am wondering if HRT is holding me back? I haven’t found much information about the effect of HRT and it’s effect on weight loss.

I make your New York Cheesecake recipe. It is in the fridge calling me home ( from work that is). LOL

So sorry to drop out of the loop and not respond!
A boar bristle brush could be had at many shops that carry large variety of hair accessories or, of course, online!

Hi farmgirl,

Thanks for this information. And, tell me, do you find that you are able to lose excess body fat/weight also? I keep thinking that perhaps I should stop the 20/4 fast every day with the added in 3-10 day fasts because they may just be too stressful and causing other hormonal (Cortisol) issues that keep me “stuck” on chubby :frowning:

I would like to eat more often, but I have become so used to the fasting I don’t think of eating until after 3 or 4PM!

I know my food choices have been far to broad as well and the stress factor in personal life has been through the roof. Ugh. I just fear T2D and hate being too big for my clothes. I refuse to buy expensive bigger clothing and will only shop thrift shops if I need another item. I have been feeling as if there is no answer for me…any other tidbits from any 50+ ladies?

Thanks to all and God bless!

Wow Karen, a whole year and you are still staying true to your plan?! This is excellent and SOOOOOoooooooooo encouraging

Glad I came her to the forums today. Best wishes for that next 15 to be gone!

Hi - 50 in about a month and on keto a month as of this Wednesday at the direction of my physician (I have about 75lbs to lose). I’m on the LCHF (Dr. Westman) plan. 20 whole carbs (not net) per day. Higher fat, medium protein. I don’t mind this way of eating and don’t miss carbs except for what I used to experience exploring international cuisines (for example in Ethiopian and Indian - one eats the food USING pieces of bread). I’m trying not to get frustrated this early in. I quickly lost 5 lbs (as many do), I’ve followed the plan to a “T” - no cheats whatsoever, tracking once a week to make sure my macros are good. Same 5 pounds now a month in. Everyone asks how it’s going, expecting to hear about some miraculous loss. I see my doctor on Wednesday where he’ll measure body fat, waist size, etc. I’m hoping to see at least one non scale victory. He’ll tell me to keto on - and I will. Sigh… (Not ready for fasting yet - please don’t suggest it.). Glad to read about others’ victories and challenges.

Hi, I’m happy to find this thread. I’m late 50s and started on keto in mid-June to improve my health. I had metabolic syndrome with hypertension (meds), high triglycerides (meds), obesity, and pre-diabetes. Also have hypothryroidism (meds) and sleep apnea (cpap). I was able to get off the statin for triglycerides very fast. My goal is to get off the blood pressure medicine and cpap.

I’ve lost 23 pounds to date and am enrolled in Dr. Westman’s Healcare program following his page 4 plan and less than 20 total carbs a day. The simplicity is great. I look forward to getting to know and supporting all here.

I lost very slowly until I got fat adapted about 12 weeks in. It will happen!

(Karen) #331

Thanks. 4 slip ups in a year. I am not diabetic but the lack of estradiol makes it tough.

Thank you - I needed to hear that.

You might want to check out this podcast:

Megan Ramos discussed how important it is to mix things up and keep your body guessing about input. Your body has probably gotten complacent with your feeding routine.

#334

Thank you!

(back and doublin' down) #335

Welcome! Don’t worry about fasting. From my experience, when your body is fat adapted, fasting will come naturally. You’ll be going through the day and realize you aren’t hungry. Or wake up feeling full. There is no ONE WAY ONLY. Just do you. N=1. Tweak at things if you hear someone doing something different that grabs your attention.

KCKO!

Hi Karen! Just saw this and it is all such great news! Especially the PD information! My brother-in-law has PD and I would love to cut and paste your post and send to my sister - but only with your permission. Thanks so much for sharing!

#337

I am taking Synthroid & I haven’t had any problems with Keto or fasting I’m almost to 4 months & I don’t think much about my thyroid at all. More concerned about my HTN & T2DM. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

#338

Agree wholeheartedly!

#339

I also use Carb Manager.

#340

How did you know you when you were fat adapted?

(Karen Leigh) #341

Hi katyq02! Of course you may copy my post and send it to your sister. PD is a nasty condition with no known cure. The keto WOE seems to help my partner so we will keep on with it. If you do a search in google using the keywords ketogenic diet effect on parkinsons study several good links will come up. Good luck to your brother in law. I hope this helps him.
