Keto newbie without keto flu

(Mandy) #1

Hi all,

Started keto 3 days ago. While I know thats not a long time, my reading indicated I would most likely experience some terrible side effects. It appears to me the only thing I may have is a little lack of concentration. I hate to say it out loud but I actually feel great. Maybe its all in my head but feel more energized than normal, less bloated. My history before starting keto has been low fat/low calorie. I have been a loseit app user for close to 10 years, so a food diary and tracking is a honed skill. I make all of my meals, condiments and sauces. I track my net carbs, which have been below 20 every day. I did purchase the keto strips, that appear to indicate I have a small amount of ketones in my urine but I’m also aware these strips may not be totally accurate. I’m wondering if someone else has experience starting keto coming from a background of not exactly being a carbaholic. For 10 years, I have not indulged daily in processed foods or refined carbs. I ate a lot of fruits, so natural sugars but I’ve never been a daily eater of refined anything. I wonder if my results will be slower because of that fact? I look forward to reaping the benefits of this lifestyle, thanks for reading!

Edit: I forgot to include, I started this journey as over the past year, with a little more sugar here and there than I should have had, I gained 30 pounds. its the only thing that changed in that time frame, so not only do I want to lose what I have gained, but feel better all around.

Hi. I started 5 days ago. No flu yet. I feel great. Lost 5 lbs and lots of volume.
Lifestyle-wise, I’m the opposite. I’ve been eating a high sweet high fat basically all junk food diet all my life. I’m tired of my addiction and want to feel better and be around for my kids. “Only” have 25 lbs to lose in my body but 300 lbs to lose in my head.
Good luck.

I can’t think of any reason why?

In fact, I think you will probably have less carb withdrawal symptoms (misguidedly called keto Flu :grinning:
As for results, once you are in Ketosis( you probably are now), and get fat adapted (2-6 weeks of tight keto), then things should move along as normal.

Your only issue may be

You may have suffered a slowdown in your BMR - basal metabolic rate. Extended calorie restriction will do that (lots here on that subject). It may take some time to rebuild it - I’m sorry I cant point you to any specific resources as to how to do that - but there are probably threads here talking about it. I 'N=1’ed it with my own homegrown method, and think I ramped up my BMR.

Follow Jason Fung (idmprogram.com), and learn about eating periods, reducing insulin etc. Lots of knowledge to be gained on your journey to a healthy body composition and healthy insulin levels.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have actually wondered if my BMR has slowed down. I’m approaching 40 so the odds are either from my calorie restriction or my age, that might be the case. I will do some research on that.

I haven’t had any weight loss yet, not even water. With that said, I’ve been drinking at least a 2 liters/day for years. I’m fairly certain I’ve not been dehydrated, not sure if that plays a part.

I haven’t had any carb cravings surprisingly, during my waking hours that is. I had a dream that I was shoveling sour patch kids into my mouth…LOL, so maybe I have a craving somewhere in there.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #5

Since you’re talking about weight loss, I assume that’s your reason for eating a ketogenic diet, not the metabolic benefits. So in that case, be aware that women, because of their hormonal complexity, don’t usually lose weight at the same rapid rate as men do. Also, consider whether losing fat or losing poundage is more important to you. If you’re okay losing inches but not necessarily pounds, don’t worry about the scale. You might very well be adding lean muscle at the same time as you are burning off fat, which will make the scale an unreliable guide to how keto is affecting you. Furthermore, you might also find that fat-adaptation brings with it a lot of additional benefits in terms of better health, more energy, better mental clarity, and the like, regardless of what happens to your weight and/or dress size.

That’s hilarious, sour patch kids, lol. I had dreams in the beginning as well but I snarfed down nachos in mine

I am looking forward to all of the great things that keto has to offer but I Would be lying if my spurring reason was not my recent weight gain. I’m going to stick with it and hope that fat adaptation makes me feel great!

@Lesliemont hahahaha…its so weird. I love nachos way more than sour patch kids!!
