Keto Monitoring Hell

(Marcy Thompson) #1

First time poster here.

Started eating keto 11/27. It has been pretty amazing for me. I’ve lost about 20 pounds and I feel good. I’ve stalled with weight loss a little bit and a few weeks ago I noticed my blood ketone levels were low. Being pretty strict, this confused me but hoped it was a fluke.

When they didn’t go back up, I caved and started using a keto supplement. I was traveling this last week and new I’d be having at least a couple of drinks. My keto levels were in the 2’s all last week. Since yesterday, the highest I’ve had was .6 and this is even with still drinking the keto supplement.

Any ideas why This is happening? Continuing to eat keto. TIA!

I have read that it’s normal for blood ketone levels to drop after you become fat/keto adapted. Various cells of your body are now consuming the ketones for energy, hence the levels in the blood will not be as high.

(Though there are other reasons that your blood ketone levels might drop too.)

The link below offers several possible explanations about why you might be showing fewer ketones in your blood after eating ketogenically for awhile.

Also, the 2 Keto Dudes had an episode re alcohol and ketogenic eating which was originally aired on April 16, 2016. If I recall correctly, they explain that for a period after drinking an alcoholic beverage, your liver will prioritize metabolizing the alcohol and will not produce ketones until the alcohol is neutralized. This might explain the most recent drop.

If you are still “ feeling good” maybe some of this information will be helpful in understanding why it can still be a good way of eating for you. Good luck!
