Interesting benefits claimed for lower biological age on keto.
Keto diet, benefits for aging
ketogenic diets are lacking in a range of vitamins, minerals, and fibers
Their mom’s diet lacks in those and I may be even right…
MY keto is highly nutritious. Actually, there are so many diets (including the normal, whatever we like one) that are more dangerous as it’s very easy to eat too much nutritionally bad things and it may result in taking not enough nutritious food. Common keto items are pretty good if you ask me.
I am quite sure veganism (and it’s very beloved lately for some reason) is WAY harder to pull off than keto. One really needs to focus on nutrition there and it still may not work, not even temporarily (okay, the latter is true for every diet, people are just that different).
Oh, STARVING on keto is bad? Thank you, Captain Obvious! It was very helpful. What does it have to do with the healthiness of keto itself, though…? If one inevitably starves on keto (heard about such a case before and saw a few others who automatically ate almost nothing but they didn’t even try to change it), they shouldn’t too keto, it’s the same with IF. It doesn’t makes something like keto OMAD bad or low-cal. If I do it, it never is.
By the way, it doesn’t always happen but I got some white to dark brown hairs after keto The end is white, the root is brown
It was new to me. It may not mean anything, I just got reminded of this fun happening.
Here’s the study, which appears to be out of Spain:
https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/17/6/1060
They used a very low calorie keto diet for 6 months, though.
I have noticed that even thin folks who run a lot, many of them don’t have great skin. Skin is what I think improves a lot with keto, and even more with collagen peptides.
How much Collagen do you use @ctviggen? Maybe help to know how much per my weight, I should take, I use one scoop of my Primal Kitchen. I notice on Vital Proteins that it has about double the amounts of Amino Acids that PK. I am wondering if I am taking enough
The cholesterol going up has been the only concern I’ve had. But mostly, I don’t think about it, but I think my doctors worry themselves sick, or worse, just basically let me know they think I’m stupid.
It’s my decision though so either way it goes, I can’t blame anyone else, I do keto of my own, free will
I’ve eaten so much meat I now look too young to buy alcohol … which is no great loss
That’s a good question. I’m just taking one scoop per day. I’m using the Vital Proteins, and I buy it when it’s on sale at Costco. They no longer include a scoop, but I’m using an old scoop from when they did include a scoop. I’m not sure of the weight of what I’m taking though.
There may be better collagen peptides out there, but they have these at Costco, and they seem to work for me.
I don’t take any as a suppliment … Do I need any? I prefer to ask you because I know Dr Google is next to useless.
No problem Bob, your taking twice what I take most likely as mine, with PK is I think most aminos are half as much as VP’s I’m not stopping my collagen, but I may continue to take only my Glycine, Potassium, Magnesium Citrate, Fish Oil and Niacinimide. I have Creatine, but not sure I should add it in but would like to see if it helped my muscles in calves recover. They’re sore even with missing at least a week of any real exercise,
Thanks much, really appreciating your input, and just 7 days until my Echo now, really anxious about that denise
I don’t think Google is all bad, but we do have to pretty much educate ourselves. Kind of like I was taught to look both ways before crossing a street denise
I use creatine (3gr a day), beef protein isolate (1/2 scoop), fermented l-glutamine (3 gr), and a 1/2 teaspoon baking soda for both lifting and running.
I have had a much quicker recovery time both in day-to-day stuff and things that might have turned into more of an injury previously. Creatine is the thing I added most recently. I guess using a small amount of it consistently is better than larger amounts as needed.
ETA- I dropped collagen peptides when I added the beef protein isolate because I work out in the morning, but don’t eat until afternoon or evening and wanted complete protein for muscle recovery.
Right now, and it was good to get your info, I am wondering if the Creatine has increased my Tinnitus (ringing in ears). I had used some of it previously but didn’t remember why I stopped using it.
I bought the NOW brand, monohydrate. I found info on how much to use, per my weight, and it said to start with 1/2 tsp so I went with that. I do remember I used 2 x 1/8 tsp before and took it after and before my workouts. That was probably dumb to do it that way, but I stopped it for some reason after a couple of days, maybe 4 days. I was going to the gym regularly.
So I will take it again, maybe Monday, to see if it spikes my Tinnitus again, hopefully it won’t. Yesterday was the last time I used it, and I felt strong enough to do an extra uphill walk. I can’t say it was the Creatine, but I hadn’t walked for I think it was a week, so could have been. It probably doesn’t work that fast, but I will try it again.
I’m started some supps again, along with collagen in the a.m. but only these listed below:
Glycine 1000 mg at p.m.
Mag Citrate 1000 mg (1 x 500 a.m. then p.m.)
Pottasium 510 mg (p.m. only so far)
Niacin 500 mg *more info below on that.
Cod Liver Oil 1245 mg(3 gel-caps, a.m. for specifically dry-eye)
I also add 1/8 of a tsp of Salt to my 16 oz water-jug a day.
*The Niacin is specifically for lowering my cholesterol. No matter what anyone tells me, I worry as it is up to 587 total, and 149 Ldl. I won’t take a statin, but the Niacin sounded as if it might take it down enough to get my doctors off my back I do eat a lot of red meat now, it’s all I like as far as meats. I eat 6-8 oz at dinner (I’m 2 meal a day) which I finish by 4-4:30 p.m. then fast until brunch between 11 a.m. and 1pm.
Those two meals may eventually join up since they are so close together anyway
Hi Pjam, I am taking supplements mainly to see if it helps me at my age, 72. Special circumstances as well with my taper off of a benzodiazepine. I feel my food intake is very good, but I also wonder if I get “all” I need from what I can afford to spend on groceries. I but a lot of read meat, eggs, cheese, and it’s less expensive then the way I shopped before keto 4 years ago.
I’m glad you are doing so well with your quest for the best you can be Even at 72, I still am driven to do the same, Denise
absolutely right. We are IMO on the best overall diets but if there’s 2% improvement to be had … then why not?
Since starting first keto and now carnivore I think I’m always in some form of experment on myself. My approach is a bit random so results are hard to interpret but sometimes we hit on something, right?
Hoping to talk to you about your Niacin I saw mentioned on another thread @vwerner, hope you won’t mind me flagging you but I have started the Niacin to lower my total cholesterol and would love to hear if it worked for you denise
@Goldengirl52 Hi Denise. I believe 500 to 1000mg of Niacin is a good dose. I currently take 250mg twice a day. Be sure to take the plain flushing type, as part of the benefit comes from the flush response.
Also keep an eye on your liver enzymes as niacin can irritate some people’s livers.
thank you VWerner What test do I need to check on liver, is that included in a regular blood-panel?
Yes, I was sure to get the right niacin. The flush I got at first was pretty strong, but I knew what to expect so no problem. I do want to watch the liver thing though. And another reason for that is I have had to take tylenol regular often, not exceeding the dose recommended though, for migraines I’ve had a lot of.
My uncle’s been doing keto, not sure 'bout his age reversing lol, but he did say his back felt a bit better after his spine injury flared up. Maybe less inflammation helps? Heard some good stuff 'bout Deuk Spine Institute reviews for serious back issues, so maybe there’s a connection? Just my two cents!
Well, I spent 5 days in the hospital last week after I did the niacin for 7 days. I can’t fully blame it with no real proof but the doctor actually agreed that he thinks it was the niacin. It’ the only thing I did differently, so I stopped it of course.
I’m better but I have felt pretty weak after the pancreatitus hit me. That’s what the tests showed was “inflamed”. I never had it before, and I pray I never have it again.
