Keto breath?

(Empress of the Unexpected) #1

Do the majority of people get keto breath or urine that smells like nail polish remover? I feel like I’m missing out on something here, though I am sure people around me are relieved.

I get sweet saliva but haven’t noticed bad breath. So far my hubby hasn’t complained.

But yeah, most of the time my urine is something like a cross between asparagus pee and something dead.

Yikes! I am so strict with carbs. Do you think there is someone not working right if I am not having that problem?

(LeeAnn Brooks) #4

No, I just think people have different physiological reactions to different things.

Some people will show light ketones where others will show large amounts of ketones even if they were to eat the exact same diet. The important thing is you are in ketosis.

There are some distinct disadvantages to having high ketones besides just smelly pee.

I wouldn’t sweat it and just KCKO.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #5

Can you elaborate? Other than the breath and pee what are other disadvantages?

Flushing out excess keystones also flushes out electrolytes. The more wasted keystones, the more chance of electrolyte imbalances.

This has been a constant struggle for me as I also run, so that compounds the problem.
I struggle with lightheadedness and have had moments of knock me on my butt dizziness and nausea.

A little salt fixes it rather quickly, but it’s frustrating I can’t figure a way to prevent it from happening.

That makes sense. Basically I’m eating veggies, meat, butter, avocado. Didn’t think I was overdoing dairy but now am thinking about a month without dairy and nuts to see what difference that would make. I tell myself this every day as I find myself “forgetting” and grating cheese. But that would definitely put me under ten carbs a day. Just gotta summon the willpower.

I know a lot of people here don’t believe in pee strips but I just find it odd that after nine weeks I have only registered light pink a few times, and no breath or urine odor. I guess if I want to make sure I am on Ketosis I will have to break down and buy a blood monitor.

I honestly wonder about the quality of some of them. I read someone who wasn’t showing anything and bought different ones and all the sudden showed ketones.

These are mine. The reason I picked them is that they were made in the US. It gave me a little reassurance. I feel like there may be unscrupulous companies who make shotty strips from other countries and sell them online. I wonder if that’s one of the reasons the strips get such a bad rep.

It might be worth buying a different brand. These were something like $10 or $12, not counting shipping.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #10

I will try these. What does “professional grade” mean I wonder?

Dr. Berg on youtube says that if youre having a breath issue, you may be taking in too much protein

(Empress of the Unexpected) #12

I’m having a lack of breath issue. No ketone breath. Is that what he is talking about?

(LeeAnn Brooks) #13

I just found this. It rates the ones I have as the second best. Guess you could buy the ones they say are the best.

I’m happy I picked a decent one from the start.

Oh, and mine were so consistently purple that I started to wonder if they were accurate. Like maybe anyone would make them go purple, so I tested on my husband who doesn’t do Keto and his came up negative for ketones, so I feel pretty confident they are fairly accurate for me.

I have had a slight dip from purple to deep rose color now that I am fat adapted, which is another indicator that they are fairly accurate. This coincided with other symptoms of fat adaptation. In all, I’m happy with them.

I only test myself every so often now, just out of curiosity. My smelly pee is enough to tell me I’m still in ketosis.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #15

Thanks so much. I have been getting mine from CVS but will use this link for ordering instead.

(Robert Smith) #16

Sorry, no, he was talking about not a shortness of breathing problem but rather a bad breath issue.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #17

Sorry, I knew that was confusing. My problem is I do no t have keto breath and half the time don’t register on urine strips. So I think the answer is to rethink my diet and go on a hidden carb search.

Usually you do not smell your mouth. But there are certain feelings and tastes in the mouth which can indicate a bad breath.

Usually found in the morning and during fast but when you eat, the smell goes away.

Regina, if you’ve been doing keto for anything less than 2 months, don’t worry about it. Just follow your macros, and don’t sweat all this. If you’re not in ketosis yet, and you follow the macros, you will be. If you are, the strips don’t really show you anything. Follow your body, not some product.

Oh, BTW: “Professional Grade” means “useless hype!”

Middle of week ten. I’m asking because I thought people got into Ketosis in a matter of days. I think I really need to start carb counting again! And I am going to experiment with cutting out all nuts and all dairy with the exception of butter. I think that’s where the carbs are sneaking in.
