Hi guys, Deepti here. I have tried keto For 3-4 weeks before . I didn’t see much change jus dropped close to 5 kg and quit… I have hypothyroidism and take medication 100mg everyday . Recent test in Feb 19 shows everything under control but I want to try keto again . There are lot of conflicting views on thyroid and keto.
Has anyone out there done thyroid with keto and succeeded. Need a little motivation here… currently weighing 83 kg
Keto and hypothyroidism
It’s not a crash diet, it’s a long term health upgrade. You’ll have to stick with it longer than a month in order to see results. Thyroid function could possibly improve as a result, depending on food choices. “Keto” is merely a macronutrient guideline.
Yes I do agree on that … with lot of conflicting views on keto and thyroid and slow progress it’s really discouraging.
One thing that may help is setting small goals along the way. Waist size, thyroid med reduction, bodyweight/bodyfat, skin looks, facial changes, etc. It can be encouraging to keep hitting milestones rather than be discouraged that you’re not at your ultimate goal yet.
Sure thank you… planing to adapt to keto lifestyle. I am vegetarian so any tips would help
Unfortunately I have no tips for vegetarian. Plants lack bioavailable vitamins and the fat and protein sources are sub-par in so many ways. Hopefully someone else can chime in but you just can’t be healthy like that without serious supplementation. Sorry.
I’m not vegetarian either, but I know vegetarian keto can be done, especially if you eat eggs and dairy products. If you search the forum, you may find some threads on vegetarian keto.
To see results-I suggest doing keto for more than a month. Depending on any metabolic damage you may have and also having an autoimmune disease-it could take a while to become fat adapted. I have hypothyroidism, celiac and CFS-it took me the better part of 3 months to understand HOW to eat on keto and probably another 4 after that to become fat adapted. It takes time. Patience is so necessary but I think it’s great that you’re willing to try. If you’re vegetarian; eggs, cheese, avocado/olive oil, butter, coconut oil (make some fat bombs?) are all going to be your friends. I suggest getting the right supplements so that you’re not feeling fatigued or lacking any nutrients. But… patience, patience, patience. <3
I have been keto for almost 10 years now and am hypothyroid (treated). My thyroid function improved a bit on keto although not enough. I am not a vegetarian but know that people can do well if they are careful.
Every body is different and predicting how you will do is impossible. However, as noted above, you need to dig in for a minimum of 6 weeks and 3 months would be better. It can take some that long to become fat adapted.
My personal experience is a full year of weight loss with pretty consistent lb. per week loss. I did have a long stall but made up for the weight loss once it ended. Since then, I lose about 2 lbs per year. That doesn’t sound very impressive but the changes to my overall health have been massive and for those reasons, I am a ‘lifer’.
Yeah may this time … I should just keep pushing ahead and focus more on mon scale progress and yes patience
I’ve found that focusing on the non-scale progress of hypothyroidism is what will really show results. Listen to your body, keep track of your symptoms now and then how they change as you’re going forward in your keto WOE. For me (only 6 weeks in), I’ve seen a significant changes in my energy levels. I can get out of bed in the morning without having to draaaag myself out. My skin isn’t as dry as it has been (still not back to normal, but improvement nonetheless). Inflammation in my ankles and feet is almost non-existent.
I realize that to some, all of these don’t seem like a big deal, but when you’ve been living with an underactive thyroid, some of these small changes back towards normalcy can be a big deal!
One more piece of advice is this: stick to it. Everyone says it because it’s the truth, but this can’t be done as a quick fix, especially with thyroid issues. It will take time for your body to adjust and heal itself. Celebrate the small victories because honestly, any progress, no matter how small, is still progress!
I got thyroid because of crash low calorie diet. And I have it since 8-9 years. So ist advice don’t go calorie deficits. Keto is the only diet won’t effect you thyroid. So eat lot of fat eggs cheese. This diet works and this is from someone who killed metabolism doing yo yo diet all my life. I am 38 just had 2 kids reached to 215 pounds. Started keto on 1st December and today I am less than 145 pounds. Big suggestion be patient. It will work and you will feel healthy and nourished. You have to be able to control all those Indian breads. Ask any q by the way I am Indian to not vegetarian though
I have hypothyroidism and I have been following a Keto WOE foe almost two years. Weight loss is slow but that is not my reason for Keto. I do it for health benefits. I have reduced pain meds by 60% and feel great.
Don’t use hypothyroidism for an excuse not to eat this way but chose this WOE because it will make you healthier.
Wow … that’s quite motivating…
What was ur average day on keto ??? And how frequently u used to work out ?? @Pasta
Hi, Im in 8th week of keto…fat adapted ? Not sure
Feeling great - yes
Lost inches - big yes
Lost weight - 11 kgs
Thyroid update - droped from TSH 3.2 to 1.2 ( may go off tablets soon )
Insulin drop - yes, H1AC from 6.4 to 5.3 ( may go off tables soon.
Deit - no meat only veggies + eggs
Planning to continue- forever
I did not do any workout. I joined a gym thinking I’ll but my daughter does not stay in play area and she is stuck to me. Once in a while I just walk in my basement treadmill that’s also not very often so from December I might have walk like 5-6 time so basically zero workout.
@Renu hey thanks for the response … that’s an amazing progress … Keep going
My reports came in yesterday TSH 0.47 from 2.3
Just be patient and don’t get upset on scale. If u can ask ur husband to hide it. You will get there. Workout does not make u loose weight though it will make you hungry and when u workout hard u want to treat yourself thinking u burned so much and that does not work in keto. So good long walks are good until you loose most of fat then you can hit gym real hard! Good luck to you!
