Started keto about 2weeks or so ago. Decided to give it a try after hitting a plateau on a low calorie diet. Now, to be fair, I had lost about 30 pounds of fat on the low cal diet, but had recently got fed up with it. So I arrived at Keto!
Got to say, apart from a couple of headache days on the first days, I’ve had no real issues. I occasionally feel very slightly light headed, but nothing that concerns me at all. I just take it as a sign I’m in ketosis. I’ve had the initial 4-5lbs of water loss, and feel that I’m now settling in nicely. I workout regularly, and found that my stamina dropped for the first week, but has returned to normal, if not better. I should have mentioned, I also do 16:8 IF with keto, preferring to eat lunch at sometime after 12 midday, and dinner around 7:30. I have never enjoyed breakfast, so not eating till lunchtime is perfect for me. Anyhoo, just checking in, and saying thanks for all the info posts that have been invaluable so far!
Just saying Hi
Welcome! Sounds like you’re off to a great start! Your eating schedule sounds pretty much like mine. I don’t do breakfast (in the morning anyhow…), just my morning commuter cup of coffee.
Hello Tony.
Calorie restriction diets may work short term but the weight almost always come back. You’ve made a good decision in trying LCHF. The only restriction is carbs and while calories do matter, we don’t have to count them to be healthy and lose weight. It’s all about choosing the right food for our body.
The headaches and light headedness are most likely due to a sodium deficiency. When we restrict carbs, our lower insulin levels mean we excrete sodium a lot faster than we are used to. Two+ teaspoons of salt over the course of your day should make those symptoms go away.
Hopefully the benefits of LCHF will convince you this isn’t just a diet, it’s a very easy and healthy way of eating. If you have any comments, concerns or questions, just ask. There’s a lot of very helpful and knowledgeable people here.
Best wishes on your journey.
Good for you. I hope you start to see some non-scale benefits, too, like having lesser aches and pains, being able to eat delicious food and enough to satiate your appetite, plus your body is transforming itself from the inside out. Do you enjoy what you are eating? I enjoy our meals so much.
Welcome to this fabulous forum, Tony. Any questions you have, ask away, I am no expert by any means, but there are tons and tons of very helpful and knowledgeable Ketoers here!
I already use an electrolyte replacement, plus I like salt…lots on my food. So, no, I’m pretty sure the light headed ness isn’t sodium related. I am, however, enjoying the food selection on keto, so that and the fact that changing things up is good for you, changing from calorie counting to Lchf just makes sense. One thing I noticed, and it’s strange…
I have a garmin watch that has a silicone wrist strap. I have had to put sticking plaster on the inside of the strap because I’ve had a bad rash reaction to it since I’ve had it. A few days ago, the sticking plaster got wet and started to peel off so I removed it. I didn’t have any to replace it with, so left it off. Guess what? The rash has not reappeared! Also, I had some mild adult excema, which has all but cleared up in the last week! Nothing prescribed by my doctor has had any effect, but since starting very low carb, it’s clearing up!
Coincidence? I’m not so sure.
From what I’ve read, eczema is caused by eating foods that cause inflammation. The main culprits are often grains and dairy. Eating low carb greatly reduces our bodily inflammation. I’ve read about others who have also seen their eczema disappear after going LCHF. Congrats on your unexpected victory.
Be careful with supplemening electrolytes. Getting too much potassium or magnesium is often worse than not getting enough and sodium is the key to balancing them all.
That is so awesome; love to hear this! Some of the things I - and others - have experienced are no short of amazing! Tons of non-scale benefits.
Sounds like you need more salt, maybe magnesium & potassium too. This is most often a sign of electrolyte imbalance, it is not a sign of ketosis. You’re definitely on the right track though
Thanks for all the replies guys! Since I still have a light headed feeling, that I’ve tried upping salt and potassium for (logging with chronometer), I’m going to start a new thread about it in a more suitable place on the forum.
Thank you for the really nice welcomes!
