(bryan vandyke) #242

Better:

  • obesity.
  • Snoring. After a while on keto wife casually mentions i hadn’t woken her up in months.
  • Headaches. Only realized this one last week when a coworker asked to borrow aspirin. The few times i was in the bottle was 20 minutes before big storms rolled through the area. (New storm predicting superpowers?)
  • Asthma. Except for 2 salesmen level of cologne experiences.
  • Hangryness
  • Blood pressure. It’s was never bad but now it’s great.
  • Dry elbows, feet, ankles. Cod liver oil made them baby smooth.
  • Bacon deficiency
  • Back pain
  • Heart burn. Never realized this was a problem until it was gone.
  • Mosquitoes. Seriously, my family gets MURDERED by them and other bugs. They leave me alone.

Not improved:

  • Dog cat allergies
  • Ragweed allergies. inconclusive since “knock me on my ass” week isn’t until end of August.
  • Hearing. Slight tinnitus. But since my wife, even in middle age, has Supergirl level hearing. She can hear into ultrasonic. It’s a little hard to judge without proper testing.
  • Eyesight. Genetics. Thanks mom and dad.

Made worse

  • Childhood heel tendonitis brought back and new sciatica. From overdoing all the walking from all the energy. But where this used to cause pain for weeks now is gone with one nights sleep.
  • Grey hair. Head no change. But longer fasts seem to make the grey in my beard accelerate.
  • Cold temperatures. No insulation, get way colder faster.

Inconclusive:

  • Previously mentioned allergies
  • Sunburn. Mixed results. Seem to get burned less and recover faster but nothing definite.
  • Resting heart rate. Not enough data. Seems too be slightly better overall. A few readings Even indicate it might be waaay better.
  • Migraines. Figured out my triggers decades ago and have avoided them ever since. no desire to try to start one to test.
  • Cavities no new cavities. But that one spot they’ve been watching for years they decided to fill in. Was hoping keto and vitamin K2 would have fixed it.
  • Kidney stones. Haven’t had any in ten years so no way to test short of xrays. Retroactively blaming fructose and SAD diet.

Sometimes I have to put a pillow between my knees when laying on my side because the bones touching hurts. I lost a lot of fat off my legs so the cushion is gone.

I hope eventually they get de-sensitized and quit hurting.

Small price to pay for thighs that don’t rub together anymore when I walk!

That is an awesome NSV. I have noticed mine are getting better, will be fun to see if they go away. They are not nearly as visible anymore.

I’m not getting bit by mosquitoes this summer. Usually I’m bit frequently and have been all my life. I could walk into the woods with several other people and I will come out with bites and no one else will have them. But this year nothing so far. It’s also the first year I haven’t eaten sugar.

(Jane) #247

Maybe the ketones in our breath drives them away?

I was having severe, debilitating menstrual cramps before starting keto, sometimes so bad I had to stay home from work. Now I have almost no cramps at all, and when I do have them they are a short-lived unpleasant nuisance, but far from debilitating. I feel downright liberated.

Sort of the same thing happened to me with migraines the first time I went low-carb in 2008. I’ve had weekly and semi-weekly at least migraines since I was 15, and about a month after starting low-carb in 2008 I suddenly yelled out one day, “HOLY CARP! I HAVEN’T HAD A MIGRAINE IN A MONTH!!!”

Even though I went back full-carb after getting pregnant I’ve been able to manage my migraines like I’d never had before.

Serious ?! i just tought i imagent it :joy: i am only in 4 weeks but not as many bites AND not as itchy !

(Angie Cummings) #251

Exact same thing for me. I had some days where I just had to curl up in a ball for the day. Every cycle since I’ve been on Keto has gotten better and better and the last one I hardly even felt a twinge.

Yeah, I used to be mozzies favorite flavor. I have been hiking around lakes and rivers this summer where I would have had on repellant, treated clothing, and long sleeves. Never went out around sunset either. This summer shorts and tees, I have had one bite. My husband usually is skipped over he had three that day we were by a lake watching a sunset. So not even moving targets.

I would eat Keto for the rest of my life if this was the only benefit I got, but thankfully I have a bunch more too.

I’ve been on keto only one month but here what changed:

Less headaches but I think it’s because I stopped drinking coffee altogether.
Less skin bruising and allergies, used to get violent itches on my hands and legs.
A will to move a lot more my body.

I still don’t see what people means by clear head, I just don’t feel any changes, but I wasn’t a big sugar eater before either.

I love keto so far, I’m losing inches like crazy, and for once I feel like I can keep this way of eating forever.

Well!!! I was eating keto for only 4 weeks. And imagine my surprise when I got off the plane recently and my feet/ankles were not swollen. There were my lovely bony feet/ankles. I was SHOCKED. That swelling had started about 8 years ago. Reduced by 75% doing the usual, diet, plane exercises, compression, blah blah. However, there was still significant ugly swelling. And it did not recover until I returned home.

I had lost maybe a pound (I’m within 20 of my ideal weight). But can you even imagine the healing that is going on inside my body in only 4 weeks to see such a dramatic change in something that I figured was my “lot in life”!!!

The prevention factor of this WOE and the silent healing going on is a wonderful thing. So for those whose primary purpose is losing weight…try not to be discouraged if you stall or the weight doesn’t come off as quickly as you’d like. Give your wonderful body a chance to do its thing and make you healthy in ways you may never know. My experience truly demonstrated that to me.

Arthritis is inflammation of the joints. Carbs are the poison for all inflammation in the body. So it will fix that. HOWEVER, if the pain is due to an old injury, that won’t be helped except for pulling off the chronic inflammation. So even the pain from those might lessen.

(Casey Crisler) #256

“I still don’t see what people means by clear head,“

Same here. Almost 3 months in and I swear I am getting more stupid. Kind of like Elaine Benes on that Seinfeld episode where she stopped having sex (unlike George, who went the other way).

(Casey Crisler) #257

I sure hope so. It’s really making it harder to hike each day. I’ve just learned to grit my teeth and keep going.

Update! I think after 3 months its finally curing (or lessening) my sciatica! I’ve been to several doctors and chiropractors over the last few years that couldn’t figure out why I felt this constant pain down my right leg. My insurance denied an MRI and an xray showed nothing abnormal, yet a 28 year old female can barely walk or put her own shoes on most days? Hmm. Their answer was pain pills and muscle relaxers, no thanks. I started keto 3 months ago and started doing stretches at home, worked through my physically demanding job, and I’m soo so happy to say that the past week or so my pain has been minimal. I hope it lasts, I feel such relief after 10ish years of sciatic/back pain. Regretting those doctor bills for nothing!

Oh and… People are finally starting to notice the work I’ve put in  My coworker gave me the head to toe the other day and said “You look so good girl! I’m jealous!” It felt great after being a little frustrated over that stupid scale. Its going in the trash!

(Jennie ) #259

I agree, one thing it hasn’t helped is my memory. I forget everything!

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #260

The general lowering of inflammation that a ketogenic diet produces is probably what’s helping with your sciatica, but if you have an unstable vertebra, the relief may not prove permanent. Let’s hope that the trouble is/was an inflamed disc that will continue to behave itself on keto!

Faced with the threat of incipient paralysis and incontinence from permanent nerve damage, I agreed to a spinal fusion years ago. The operation definitely stabliized the vertebrae, relieved the sciatica, and prevented the outcomes I feared, but it was such a difficult experience and full recovery took so many years, that I advise people not to subject themselves to it unless it becomes absolutely necessary.

(Jennie ) #261

A friend of mine from work just went through the same thing. I’m trying everything possible to avoid that, unfortunately the pain has returned, so once again feeling defeated. Ill kcko though, don’t you worry.
