Is this normal you think?

(Flo) #1

I’ve been following a keto diet since two weeks now, so far each time I pee on a keto stick it’s says that I’m im keto (quite deep), I also experienced the keto flu and then it passed, now I have to say I really don’t feel much different than prior going keto.

Is this normal? or shall I just wait longer to see the keto benefits trigger?

I’m eating only once a day, usually it’s like:

  • 85% fats from unpasteurized butter and cold press olive oil. ( around 250gr of fats…)
  • 10% proteins, like 200gr of grounded beef or entrecôte
  • around 20 grams net carbs of veggies
3L water and around 5g of unrefined salt daily, supplement with potassium and magnesium.

Would love to hear your thoughts if you went through something similar…

Yes wait longer. You can be in ketosis well before your body is fat adapted (switched to burning fat for fuel instead of glucose). This can take many weeks or even months, it took me about 6 weeks but we are all different.

I’m at three and a half weeks, feel fine and only show trace on the urine test strips. I only got the strips a few days ago, which I regret, since I don’t know what color it would have turned at the beginning. I felt tired and grumpy the first week. I thought it was the Keto Flu, but can’t be sure, as I then came down with a head cold. Everyone seems to be completely different. But something is working because my carb cravings are gone and I have lost five pounds. The real test will be my blood results in July. Last time I tested my triglycerides were 209!! So hang in there. Are you feeling good or are you lacking energy. Is your goal weight loss?

And are you okay eating just once a day? It doesn’t sound like a whole lot! Though I envy you because I’m still hungry a lot.

(Flo) #5

@LizinLowell thanks for the advice, I’ll be more patient then

@Regina thanks for sharing your experience too. Actually my goal is to gain weight, so far it’s working, which was impossible just on carbs (of course if I don’t eat sugars)
I eat once a day but it’s a low carb feast, and since I eat like 200gr of butter + some olive oil, after that you only want water until the next day

(Flo) #6

I feel most of the time ok, sometimes very tired and energy less, but it usually doesn’t last

I did not gain mental clarity/feeling good until about 2-3 weeks.
I would up your animal fats (LCT) % some, eating only the short chains is not going to make you gain easily since it will require more processing in the liver. A word of warning though at least in my case I have to watch the order in which I eat animal fats and MCT’s/SCT’s or bad things happen.

You may require more protein as well, it depends on what your diet was like and any metabolic problems.
What are your stats, I am at 250g fat and I am 192# and loosing at the moment, very active 44 male,

It has been my experience that the worse off you are health-wise, metabolically, hormonally, etc before starting, the sooner and profound the improvements show up. If you were already fairly healthy with your diet and lifestyle, you may not experience such huge shifts in how you feel. But again, in my experience, the healing that’s going on inside (as evidenced by blood work, digestion, hormones with monthly cycles for women) is unsurpassed! And I was a fairly healthy person, good weight and working out, etc before I started

Thanks you very much for all your answers, it feels great as no one around me knows about this diet so it makes it hard to share and compare results with others.

I’m 75kg and 1.89cm tall. Active but not crazy neither, lot’s of walking and gym twice a week.

I’m not the healthiest but I have a very clean and simple diet since two years, which as resolved most of my health issues but made me way too skinny. I have a big issue with candida so I’m hoping with OMAD KETO I could get a ride of it. I’m thinking of using L-Glutamine and or HCL to boost my digestion, are you guys familiar with it?

(Chris W) #10

Are you male or female?

Other than being skinny and candida what are your health concerns/issues?

My understanding is that they are for immune system strength I don’t use either. For digestion a lot of people use apple cider vinegar (ACV) I use that on occasion.

(Diane) #11

Here’s a great article regarding ketosis and fat adaption.

(Flo) #12

@In2steam I’m a 32yrs male. I do ketosis mostly for brain enhancement and as I beleive it’s an amazing way to stay healthy. Also for the appetite regulation (as literally could never stop eating when it comes to carbs).
I also use ACV half an hour prior my meal, it’s seems to work great but to tacle candida It seems I need something powerful to ensure a proper digestion and not leave anything too long in the colon.

@DiMo thanks for the article, very interesting indeed, I guess over the next week I will see if I get fat adapted.

Outside of what you are doing now the only thing that pops to my head is try adding some lemon juice to your diet as well, I have a half of one almost every day in hot water with my salt and coconut oil.

And I forgot one of the reasons your are pee sticks are purple is that you are dumping excess ketones, that is how they work, they are not a true reading of your level of ketosis but that is a great indication. Part of that is what you are eating as much as anything else, those fats are directly more or less either turned to fat by the liver or are broken down into ketones/energy.

(Leslie) #14

I am familiar with L-glutamine for improved digestion. Not from personal use, however. I have a daughter with leaky gut syndrome and she’s been taking it to help her.

Many of us consider ourselves self-experimenters on a journey to improve our health. My recommendation is when you add new things to your regimen, do it one at a time with at least a week in between so you can be certain how it effects you.

I hope you find this helpful
Keep calm and keto on

(Flo) #15

Many thanks for the advices, yes I’ll add one by one the supplement and see how I react to each.

I also do half a lemon in warm water

Btw, right now my skin is really bad and greasy, I thought keto would help in that regard, or is it just because it’s only my third week in?

(Chris W) #16

Greasy skin comes and goes with me, it seems to be worse when my diet is not balanced(high portein & low ketones), or I have taken a lot of MCT’s like you have. I also would get a lot of itchy spots the first couple weeks in places I sweat there was not a lot of body fat like upper arms and ankles. Goat milk lotion really helped me, and I am not that type of a person, the normal lotions would only last a couple hours.

(Ethan) #17

Very little protein… vegan little

(Flo) #18

Huh bad skin on keto would be because of MCT’s on your experience, I need to try out and see how’s my skin reacting to less MCT.

Anyone else here struggling with bad skin that has noticed a relationship with MCT’s or other keto related foods?

(Roy D Rushing Jr ) #19

As I understand it, when you become fat adapted the test strips will actually stop showing a strong presence of ketones. People keep saying that they are unreliable at best though. I take that to mean that they may or may not show the expected result even when everything is going as planned, so you should take what they say with a grain of salt. Still, they seem to work well for confirming things. They confirmed when you were in ketosis. They may yet confirm when you’re fat adapted by showing a reduction in ketones, but they if they don’t, then don’t sweat it.

(Chris W) #20

I think this varies person to person. I actually went the stronger the more I fat adapted, also the more fat I have they tend to be higher as well which would support the brown fat/dumping of excess. And that’s all they show is an excess of the lower level ketone acetoactate some people are using them all, some people are dumping a lot.
