Just kidding (sort of) but SPAM is 79% calories from fat, 17% from protein and 4% from carbohydrates and 1369 mg of sodium. It seems they knew a good macro ratio back in the 1930’s and 40’s when the military used it.
Is SPAM the perfect keto food :o)
Macro-wise it’s great but unlike actual fresh meat it ranks pretty low in micronutrients.
Since I’m trying to lose weight, I prefer far more protein content and far less fat content. I don’t need to eat fat to hit a guesstimate of a macro. I have plenty of stored body fat that can be used to fill in what I don’t eat.
I’ve never understood canned Spam. I can buy cheaper cuts of ham myself and grind it up, probably getting a higher quality product for less. Who knows what cuts of ham they throw into Spam…!? Probably all the leftover pieces they can’t sell any other way.
When I was a kid, my Dutch grandmother always used to make balkenbrij for us. The Dutch version of scrapple, which is primarily a way to use pork scraps. When we would visit, she’s need to tell the local butcher to save all the pork parts he’d normally throw away. But scrapple can also be made from premium pork cuts, like pork belly.
I know: Ham and pork shoulder. Let’s not perpetuate the myth here, okay?

Confession: I’ve never had Spam. I only live it vicariously through Monty Python.
Personally, I like Spam, especially with eggs. Although I don’t eat it that often, I have a can of the Jalapeno Spam in my cupboard currently.
I was always very curious about spam and Vienna sausages I grew up with. I stopped eating them because of a fear of fat and sodium but now my views on Sat fat and sodium are different.
I’m personally not a fan of spam. I prefer to go by the acronym 'Something Posing As Meat" whenever it is mentioned.
Certainly it requires some processing and that should discount its value some… however I think there’s far more terrible things to eat and I would eat it in a pinch.
My idea of the perfect keto food is bacon. Bacon is 68% calories from fat and 31% protein. Even though bacon also requires processing, it tastes 100 times better than spam.
I recommend trying deep fried spam chips. They look like real chips, and taste not too far off either. You can get a nice crunch, and they are yum!
I like Spam for a two or three times a year meal only, at best. It will come to me as a craving when I open the pantry in search for something else. But it has to be fried to a drier state (no not Nevada) for me to like it. Like mentioned above, in a pinch, its OK. So I’m not going to criticize it.
I like spam and will eat it but it’s a bit salty and greasy (even though I like both those qualities generally.)
Liverwurst may be the “good spam”, especially for keto.
When I was a child (50 years ago) my neighbor would occasionally set up the Coleman stove out in the back yard and make Egg McMuffins with eggs, Spam, cheese on English Muffins and we all loved them. I tend to only eat Spam now when backpacking.
Yup I am a spam lover too. the negative thing is it has nitrates in it… those are not good, but I’ll eat it in a pinch!! Good fat & protien
In Vietnam one of the C-Ration offerings was “ham slices” which of course was Spam in a round can. We heated them up and it taste like crap. But if we could get a large top from a large can we could “grill” them and that made them palatable.
The spam ham was one of my favorites. I hated spagghetti which was worse than chef bor ardi but many loved it so I would trade for spam.
Hey, I liked the spaghetti, too, and the minced meat (shredded beef) was decent. Pork slices were palatable. Beans and weenies needed some doctoring up with hot sauce. Ham and white beans were crappy.
I most often traded for minced meat. Also, not being a smoker, I traded my cigarettes for Chicklets and chocolate/pecan disks.
That is purely subjective to your own tastes though. Personally I love SPAM. I also love Pork Belly. I also love bacon. I don’t put any of them 100 times better than the others.
I usually cube it up and fry it. Crack a few eggs over em and there’s a quick meal
