Is heavy cream in my coffee ruining my IFing?

#1

My weight-loss has stopped, I IF 16/17:8/7 everyday. I have since almost the first day I went keto 10 months ago. Haven’t lost any weight in about a month or so, down to my last 10 lbs.

Every morning I drink coffee with stevia and heavy cream, about 1 tablespoon total. Could this be hurting me?

As a side note, I’m starting to exercise (all my weight-loss/60 lbs has been diet only) hoping this will wrap things-up for me.

Hard to say if the coffee alone is holding you back, as there are so many other things that factor into your diet and lifestyle.

Technically a bulletproof coffee (BPC) ends your fast, but practically, it can help extend it. It can also be holding you back.

I love BPC, but only use it when I am on a fast, or when I feel real hungry and I don’t want to eat. It will raise your insulin for a short time, and you can stay in ketosis.

That said, you mention that you are dieting only. If you incorporated exercise, even something as light as walking or a leisurely bike ride several times a week, could help you get over the hump.

There are 50 calories in a tablespoon of HWC and 5 grams of fat so I would say yes. Depends on whether you can tolerate your coffee black or not. The caffeine alone should help suppress your appetite until lunch. Although I would still put cream in my coffee just because it’s so much better that way although I’ve gotten used to drinking it black before. Don’t forget to count the .4 carbs in a tablespoon as well.

What about having the coffee a little later to extend the fast?

Did you start to exercise already? Exercise while good for stress and fitness, is not always ideal for weight loss because it can make you hungry

When I exercise on days when I’m fasting, my scale weight is typically less than on fasting only days. I don’t know why. Maybe my body was holding on to muscle, or fluid. Doesn’t bother me so long as my scale bodyfat is decreasing.

Exercise does that to me, not fat. It’s a good thing though. It means my body is gaining muscle. It has been one of the biggest frustrations of my whole life that when I exercise, I gain weight.

But on the keto diet, I did lose my last few pounds not by cutting fat, but by increasing fat! Until I did that, I couldn’t lose those last few pounds. I guess I had to keep my ketones nice and high so my body didn’t burn my own muscle. But doing lots of exercise with carbs around 20 and super high fat did finally work for me - too well! I dropped lower than I intended and had to add in a few more veggie carbs to stabilize where I wanted to be.

Maybe you need to switch it up a bit more, rather than having the same thing every day, same fasting window, etc. It’s good to keep your body guessing!

I found the Dudes’ episode 58 ‘Switching it up with Megan Ramos’ most enlightening in this regard - worth a listen.

I do extended fasting and I drink 4-5 100ml espresso’s a day with a drop of milk and I have continued to lose weight. I just consider it a ‘fat fast’.

Thanks for the replies. Regarding exercise, just started so I haven’t seen any results yet (other than being sore).

So on the coffee, creamer technically isn’t fasting. I think I can drop it, what about stevia? Thanks for the replies!

Stopped putting cream in my coffee in the a.m. and I’m down 5-6 lbs since. Not sure it was coincidence or not. Maybe my stall was due to break?

How much fat did you start adding? Did you leave everything else the same?

You also said you started exercising around the same time, right? I’d bet it’s that (rather than taking out the tablespoon of cream).

@ yayhowfun - Let’s just say that bird didn’t stay in the air very long
