Is dairy a sugar fix?

#1

Hi All: I am day 8 eating keto and like it. I am more peaceful, my skin is glowing, i am less puffy (i do not weight myself, but definetly had shrunk), i rest better, and i became indifferent to “tantalizing” pictures of pizza, hamburgers, cakes. And strips indicate i am in moderate ketosis.

If i would eat what i want as of today, that would be: smoked Norwegian salmon, avocado, whipped cream, eggs, and Swiss cheese as a snack with my coffee. I do not want bacon. I do not want beef. I dislike the idea of chicken. In the first days i craved radishes. I relied on them. Not anymore. I do not care for radishes. As i do not care for sweet cherries in the winter. I would preffer cabbage cooked in butter.

What concerns me is my want to eat whipped cream. I whip it myself from organic heavy whipping cream. Is it my sugar fix? It says 0 carbs, 0 sugars. But google says that if i crave dairy, and whipped cream IS dairy, then all i really crave is sugar and i am getting it from my dairy. Is it true?

Now, i can teach myself out of having my beloved generous serving of whipped cream, but i am on the fence about it. I can teach myself out of cheese as well…but i do not consume it much. When i was on high carb eating, i consumed MUCH more cheese than now. But then, i did not care for unsweetened full fat whipped cream. Now i do. So i wonder about this sudden discovery of whipped cream - is it something to beware?

If it is something, that can be allowed but not really eaten, just something like an occasional berry and shot of bourbon, then i would be more comfortable excluding it - too much stress for me to master restriction in order not to harm.

If i exclude whipped cream and cheese, and use only heavy cream on a rare occasion when i care to whip up some weekend omlete… then i will be fine, right?

Because what troubles me know is that when i make a decision to stop indulging in whipped cream and occasional cheese, my mind goes “okay, then what do i eat? Beef? No, i do not want it. Chicken? Not hungry. Eggs? Too many eggs. Avocado and salmon? Those two sound good. Maybe cook some cabbage…”

Anyways, whats up with whipped cream guys?

Dairy has lactose, which is a form of glucose and where the carbs come from.

My personal opinion is getting stressed out over moderate servings of dairy is doing more harm. It’s not like you are chugging a whole carton of heavy cream!

My advice is to enjoy your food as long as under your carb limit. If down the road you hit a long stall and need to tweak then dairy is certainly one of the things you can cut out and see if it helps.

I eat whipped cream when I crave it, which the longer I go, the less I do. I eat bakers chocolate every night with a splenda, salt and cinnamon. I don’t crave the sweet as much as whatever is in the chocolate. I sleep better, breathe better and hate humans less when I do it. Just an ounce but it helps.

I don’t love cheese but it has it’s place. If, however, someone took my heavy whipping cream away I might implode. I don’t drink a ton of it but it’s so useful and I absolutely don’t think my brain is using it as a trick to get some carbs. It hardly has any at all. I do not crave milk which is a full of sugar, do you?

It sounds like you’re trying really hard to do your very best but if you take every single thing away that Google says, you might be left with nothing at all. If your whipped cream fits into your macros and you’re not substituting healthier foods so you can eat a mixing bowl of whipped cream, have yourself a little bit of whipped cream.

Hi Peta! I do not crave milk in no way. I used to add it to my coffee before keto. But that was just out of careless convenience rather than i really liked it. It cools down too hot coffee fast and adds some body to it. In the first days of keto i changed milk for half and half, and then i read that heavy cream is even less carbs, so i bought that. Adding it to my coffee is okay, but with whipped cream discovery and sudden love, i stopped using heavy cream in my coffee and drink it black instead. Too much creams are just too much.

I get catious every time when i discover “comfort” food, because i do not want to fix my moods with food, keto or not. I would like to feel like i do not want to eat and go into IF… but at the same time i do not want to get into the state when i dislike what i eat.

Right now, i suspect, i would be more successful and probably waaay into IF, if i would focus on beef and chicken. I absolutely do not want to it it and to the point of gag reflex. What it tells us? It tells that i am full, because when i am hungry, i would eat meat happily. If i am not hungry, then there is no point in indulging with whipped cream.

Deep inside i believe that our search for comfort and happy foods is what trips us into self-sabotage in the end.

In order to succeed in freedom and weight loss and health, the focus must to be shifted from food onto other aspects of life. When we are hungry, it is hard, when we are addicted to carbs, it is impossible, and, i suspect, when we create “comfort” foods, we are not feeding hunger, we introduce into out bodies food for mood. It is very complex

I absolutely agree with what you’re saying. In the beginning I told myself I could indulge in fat bombs and keto treats and it was fun trying many of them. Soon enough, as my appetite decreased, I didn’t want to waste my hunger on the least healthiest options so they got left behind.

If life throws me a curve ball and I feel the need to comfort myself with a food treat, they are there.

I tried to ease myself into it telling myself I could always have the keto treats if that meant I stayed below my 20 but you may find, like I did, that I didn’t have the snacking emotions after I got control of my metabolism. Most of the cravings for comfort food came from crashing from my last meal. The crashes don’t come now and so I don’t crave comfort foods. I eat bakers chocolate, there’s nothing comfortable about that, even if doctored up. It’s like medicine. I did have a whipped cream phase and soon got really sick of it and it just sounds gross now.

Good for you for paying attention to emotional eating, etc. Remember, it’s a journey.

I find that my tastes change over time. And I also go through periods where I will crave salmon or will crave beef or even crave broccoli. I tend to go with it knowing that it will change. I just figure my body is asking for something. And as long as it’s keto friendly, I’ll eat it.

Most full fat dairy really isn’t an issue for me. I never did drink glasses of milk so that’s never been a temptation. I do have some degree of lactose intolerance so wouldn’t want to anyway. But aged cheese… the bacteria in it that age the stuff eat the lactose. Full fat Greek yogurt does have some carbs but has a wonderful helping of protein! Love a bit of Kerrygold butter whipped/blended into my coffee.

Whipping cream was a hard one for me. I LOVE the stuff. At one time, I was drinking a half pint of it a day in my coffee. Had to quit that. Too much. Now, I have maybe a TBSP of it, along with maybe 1/2 TBSP of Kerrygold butter in my coffee whipped. I like it almost as well as the half pint of whipping cream and it’s a LOT less calories/fat coming in that I really didn’t need. I still use it, just not massive quantities in the coffee. So a pint of it in this house, which gets used for desserts and stuff like that too, will last a week, maybe more. Saved on the budget, too, cause organic HWC ain’t cheap.

I’m almost a year and a half into keto so a lot of stuff has gotten worked out over time. the HWC was just the last thing to get worked out. It was interesting that consuming that level of HWC for over a year still let me lose over 60 pounds.

Anyway, happy tweaking! Keto allows me to eat very well, and I enjoy it thoroughly.

It is a journey indeed. Thank you for your support! I also want to progress into careketofree mentality where eating does not involve immediate regret and sudden 10 lbs of water around my waist next morning. I had been fighting this water all my life, never knowing what my size will be if i ate a pie, ice cream, multiple fruits, or had a few glasses of wine the night before. Now i can eat smoked salmon which is very salty and my fingers do not become sausages! This alone is to be celebrated!

Hi Bellyman! My respect for your long ketojourney! How people add butter in their coffee? How to whip it? Is it some special equipment that is required for it? Blender?

Internally, I guess.

If your heavy whipping cream says has no carbs, it has no carbs. It doesn’t matter what google says. Butter also has zero carbs even though it comes from milk. Now, half and half has carbs and whole milk has enough to knock you out of ketosis.

This is not true. All HWC has carbs, there’s still trace lactose in it, but American serving sizes allow the nutrition labels to adjust to make it seem like they have none. Except for the honest ones, who at least tell you it’s <1g.

(Jennibc) #12

The serving size on the stuff I buy is a tablespoon and it says zero and I used a tablespoon. The stuff I buy is very very thick and it has no additives at all so that’s all fat in there.

Hello and welcome Milky.

Ditto to what @Janie said. It’s fine as long as it fits your macros and it actually sounds good to add to my coffee. As long as you are seeing positive results, keep doing what you are doing. If you stall out, then consider dropping it.

I agree with this too. But I can tell you, since my hormones have starting behaving properly, I’ve never had better control of what I eat, how much I eat and when I eat. Comfort food to me, now, is a fading bad dream. Give it some time and you may very well decide you don’t need or want whipping cream any more.

I’m trying to up my hate-humanity-less game. I think I might try this. Thanks.

You can use a blender or immersion blender. I have a cheap immersion blender and a half gallon glass jar I blend my coffee in.

An immersion blender / stick blender can be had here for around $15 - $20.

(Running from stupidity) #15

As ketocobra said, that doesn’t mean it has no carbs, just because it says that, as they can round down.

I bought a battery powered mini-whisk from Amazon for about $10. I liked frothing my coffee so much I bought another one to pack in my suitcase. I don’t add butter to every coffee I make but the frother is nice for just HWC also

I can and sometimes do chug a whole carton. Usually after whipping it. I don’t know the reason behind it, but addiction to whipped cream is definitely a thing.

(Jennibc) #18

I am choosing to not count any fractional carbs in there when I put it in my coffee in the AM because it says zero on the label. If I hit a stall, then I will reconsider, but for now, whatever I am doing is working so that falls under the small stuff not worth sweating. Yes, if someone is drinking a pint a day then it might matter, but a few tablespoons a day will not set anyone back. Additionally, I don’t believe all Heavy Whipping cream is created equally. The stuff I get, Sarah Farms, is so thick it coats the spoon and takes a while to dissolve in my coffee. The stuff from Trader Joe’s that I purchase when they are don’t have my cream at Costco, not nearly as thick. The stuff I usually use tastes much richer too.

Thank you, Bellyman!

Yes, I have found I simply don’t use food for comfort or to alleviate stress any longer. About five weeks ago, I found out that I was losing the use of my hands because of nerve damage. The only way to stop any further damage is surgery on my spine to remove the disks that are pinching the nerves emanating from my spinal column and going down my arms to my hands (I go under the knife in about a week and a half). I was a bit shaken by that news. As I left the specialist’s office and sat in my car for a few minutes, I had a fleeting moment where I thought about stopping at the grocery store on the way home and reacquainting myself with my old friends, Ben and Jerry, but thought ‘nah.’ I went home and soaked in a hot bath instead. And then I had some white wine.
