@Jennibc Best wishes and prayers to you for your surgery and speedy recovery. I know how excruciating a minor pinched nerve can be so I can only imagine what you are dealing with right now. But I’m sure the quality of your life will be so much better once this is all said and done and you are healing again.
Is dairy a sugar fix?
Jennibc, you are one courageous lady! Will keep your story in mind. I wish you good luck and to recover fast!
No need to be defensive - nobody is telling you what or what not to count.
There are lots of lurkers here and the information posted here on carbs in dairy is for everyone and is more about setting the record straight so others can decide what they want to do with the info.
A couple of Tbl a day is not significant. Using 1/4 cup in your coffee 3 times a day is a different situation.
Can’t speak for everyone, but experience has been this lately: as soon as I switched to Carnivore, my craving for milk returned. I had done great avoiding it on Keto, for the most part. I did try to do the whole almond/coconut milk thing, but since it never tasted as good as the real thing, I just stopped buying it. Then this last month, bam, milk cravings.
It can’t be the lactose I’ve been craving, for two reasons: one, I allow myself use of artificial sweeteners in my coffee, I even drink diet soda, so it’s not the sweetness that’s being craved; and two, I bought lactose-free milk, and it’s satisfied my cravings. My only thought is it might be tied to it being winter and my body can’t get D3 like it can normally in the other seasons (Vitamin D3 deficiency is huge in the Pacific Northwest).
I think this might be the reason. And I’ve also gone back to taking a teaspoon of cod liver oil every other day. Cravings satisfied. So I wouldn’t necessarily confuse addiction with cravings for vitamins you’re lacking. It could be addiction to sweets, sure, but maybe not.
@anon2571578, yes–I was using lactose-free whipping cream for a while but it didn’t make any difference at all. We went back to the regular (cheaper) whipping cream.
Wow, wouldn’t wish that on anyone.
You might have already been down this road, but have you consulted with a keto doc about your situation? The reason I ask is because I remember of Dr Berry talking about his suggesting some alternatives (mostly nutritional, I think) that he sometimes talks with his patients about when they’re contemplating things like knee replacements.
Not trying to poke in where I shouldn’t but that’s a direction I’d likely explore personally if I were facing what you are.
Wishing you the best!
This got my attention. When my knee collapsed and bent in a very unnatural position 2 years ago I knew I had torn one of my knee ligaments. My doc was hesitant to repair because of my age and the beginnings of arthritis. My choices were: lack of stability (no repair) or lack of mobility (repair with arthritis increasing due to repair). I chose the former. I have no ACL in my right knee.
Doc said “wait 5 years and have your knee replaced”.
What does Dr. Berry day about this? I would love to avoid knee replacement and am willing to fast my ass off if I can avoid it!!!
I don’t remember what kind of protocol he was suggesting, he might not have been specific, and maybe that was onthe purpose. (?)
It could be specific to the individual so that’s why I was thinking an actual visit with the doc would be what I’d want to do.
I was not being defensive. I was just responding about how I approach this way of eating. Different strokes for different folks. (I get that tone is difficult to read on these boards, but for the record, I am pretty laid back about stuff and people disagreeing with me.)
Disks have no blood supply once they degenerate there is no turning back. As it is, the longer I wait on the surgery the longer I risk permanent damage.
I’m not that sure how that works. I just remembered some talk of cartilage being regenerated, wasn’t sure how related that might be. Bones are living tissue as well, not rocks like we tend to think of them.
You may have already explored all of this with your doc. There are times when surgery really is the best option.
Again, all the best to you! It must be kinda scary.
I promise, I am not pulling this out of thin air. This is what my spinal surgeon explained to me. Discs don’t have a blood supply after a certain age. That’s why at some point most people’s discs degenerate. I have spinal stenosis in my cervical spine and the longer it goes without treatment, the worse the damage which can include paralysis or death. Not going to wait it out. I have been doing keto since spring and it has gotten rapidly, progressively worse since then.
I’m sorry, Jenn… I hope my previous posts didn’t come across as critical in any way. Sometimes life kinda sucks in the crap that gets thrown at us, some of which we didn’t cause with a bad diet and can’t fix with a good one.
Sincerely hoping the procedure goes well for you and that you’ll regain function and be able to leave a lot of pain and negative stuff behind.
