Insert obligatory I stopped losing weight post

(Char) #61

I didn’t read all the replies so I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this, but your protein intake is really high. Your body can and will convert protein into sugar so I would cut back on the protein. Try a 5% carb, 15% protein, 80% fat and see if that helps. I had the same problem a couple weeks ago.

No it doesn’t.

This is a demand-driven process, not a supply-driven one. The process of gluconeogenesis is regulated by insulin levels, not the supply of amino acids.

Thanks for your informative rebuttal. I’m not a doctor, nor do I pretend to be. It’s just what I read and from my own experience. Sorry this noob is giving wrong information. I’ll be sure to keep my comments to myself in the future.

#65

You may find this informative

#66

Sorry Char, I don’t mean to be confrontational, but your experience has been excess protein being converted to sugar?

Here is a very interesting video, by Dr. Ted Naiman, about protein consumption.

Too much protein is better than too little.

(Char) #67

That helped! Thank you for the information. I appreciate it.

(Char) #68

One week I didn’t lose any weight and I went over every little detail of the entire week from diet, exercise, etc… looking for the reason why and comparing it to my best week. The protein was the only difference, so when I read that I should cut it back I tried it the next week and I started losing weight again, but it was probably some weird coincidence that I couldn’t/didn’t account for.

I came here looking for information, help, and support from seasoned ketos since they have so much experience to share. I’ve only been at this for 2 months and the first time I post anything I get negative responses. I see now that a lot of us “noobs” aren’t well supported and the common replies I see are “I’m sick of seeing these noob posts”. I’m not an overly sensitive person by any means, but its discouraging to see those responses to someone just asking for advice. There is a big learning curve to this lifestyle and we’re just trying to better ourselves like everyone else. I WANT to be told when I’m wrong and WHY so I can be better informed and make sure I’m doing this the right way and not spreading misinformation. At least safi did exactly that which I appreciate.

You know, I actually had a bit of trouble with this when I first lost 85 lbs. It was at the same time that I was working toward my black belt and during my test, I could tell that it was easier to be pushed around. I did NOT like it. I actually had some bad dreams about being picked up and thrown into a van. Weird, but a very real issue for me at the time.

So about 2 days after getting my black belt, I told hubby I wanted to learn to shoot a handgun. He was like “Wait, you just became a black belt?” And I said, yeah, I know, but karate vs gun, gun is going to win. That’s how I went down the road of handgun classes, carry permit, then firearms instructors, and later working as a sworn officer in our county. My age and size (never thin) actually helped me in that role. People didn’t see me as a threat…more like the kindly mother (or grandmother to some). What they didn’t know is that I was perfectly willing (and able) to kick their ass or shoot them in the head if needed. In 9 yrs, never had to go hands on with anyone…could always talk them into doing what I wanted them to do.

Sorry, but this is just utter rubbish. Maybe read more of the forum, or something. But that’s just crap.

#71

Another tip - If you don’t have time to read through the thread you can do a quick search of it using the wee magnifying glass up top.

(Janelle) #72

This is how she feels. Please don’t call it crap.

I’ve seen people respond here and make people feel like idiots. I’ve seen people take over other people’s threads like it’s their personal playground. I’ve seen people start spouting advanced keto speak - like the poor person asking a simple question should know what they’re talking about.

I love this forum but it’s intimidating and I wish it would stop.

(squirrel-kissing paper tamer) #73

Maybe we should start a 2019 forum etiquette thread so this thread doesn’t get jacked?

(Running from stupidity) #74

Well, that doesn’t mean it’s right. The poster can’t even be bothered reading a thread she’s responding to, yet has otherwise read enough of the forum to know that noobs “aren’t well supported”?

Sorry, but it IS crap. There are any number of helpful people here, answering the same questions day after day because people don’t do any reading because they can’t be bothered to even use the search function, let alone do the reading as part of building a knowledge base. In terms of looking after noobs, this is one of the best forums I’ve been on, and it’s ridiculous to claim otherwise.

#75

Char, when you make the statement:

You’re telling us upfront that the other replies are not important enough for you to bother to read. How are we supposed to feel about the advice we give, when the “noobs” won’t even bother to read it?

How do you know that protein wasn’t mentioned earlier in the thread, and if so that some debate on the myth that too much protein is bad for you, wasn’t already addressed?

You said you came here for advice and support, but you are communicating something else. False information and lack of respect for others.

Sure, @juice’s response may have been abrupt and to the point, or even rude, but it was a comment made after to tone was set by you. He simply rolled his eyes, and said no it doesn’t.

Then two sources on protein were given to you.

I had been on the low carb diet for over a year before I joined the forum, even then I was hesitate to make any claims in my posts to others, unless I had some evidence to back it up.

I did make the comment early on that eating too much fat could stall your weight lose, and was quickly shot down, even though I was referring to an article I had just read, not to mention other sources where I’ve read the same.

I simply went on and didn’t make a big deal out of it. I could have accused the other person of being rude, or uninformed, but I didn’t. That was one of my first experiences on the forum, but I didn’t take that as a sign that this forum, as a whole, was rude or insensitive.

Yes, you have read several people say they are tired of these noob threads, but that is because, with few exceptions, they are asking the same question over and over again, without doing one iota of research, that the rest of us know they could find the answer to, if they would just look.

Respect goes both ways, and if you want us to respect you, then you need to show that you respect us by at least doing us the courtesy of reading the replies in the thread you are commenting on.

(Char) #76

That’s not it at all. I’m sorry I offended anyone. Deleting my account. Good luck to everyone.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #77

Not to criticize, merely to explain: How much research did you do before adopting your ketogenic diet, and where did your information come from? When you joined these forums, did you try out the search function at all, to see what it turned up? Did you find any posts with questions similar to yours and read the replies before posting a question yourself?

If you would be willing to answer these questions, I would bet they would be helpful to those of us who have been on these forums for a while. We see the same questions being asked the same ways, and to us it seems as though the people asking these questions are doing no research at all before jumping into keto. I’m sorry if that belief of ours feels judgemental. Most of us try not to inflict judgement on anyone, but I’ve noticed that the group’s energy level seems to fluctuate, and people tend to be grumpier at the low-energy points. But if we knew where you were coming from and how much you already knew, and that sort of stuff, it might help with everyone’s patience levels.

In any case, I thank you for posting this and for making me think about my own responses. I’m going to try very hard to keep them much more level from now on, because I don’t know where people are coming from and how hard they’ve already tried to find information.

If you can forgive us for our lack of patience and stick around here, you could help us all do a better job of taking care of the newcomers as they arrive. So please keep coming back and contributing to the community and holding us to account.

#78

I did not understand why people posted saying they were sick of posting either. There is not obligation to post I hope. And forums are a dying breed, “noobs” (and I dislike this term too) who arrive should be celebrated not scorned

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #79

It’s a momentary lack of patience with having to answer the same question over and over again. Many of these same people have been extremely patient with other questions, and unfortunately, a newcomer to these forums doesn’t know that. But these are the people with the information, so if they don’t post, the questions don’t get answered.

So what would be a tactful way for us to ask newcomers how much research they’ve already done, and if they’ve read the forum stickies, and searched around a bit to see if their question has already been answered?

One of the reasons @carl and @richard started these forums was so that it would be possible to search for information, because the Facebook group was being inundated with repeat questions, because Facebook is not set up to make answers permanently available. Alas, it just doesn’t seem to be working that way. Perhaps we need to simply refer people to the search function. Would you find that more helpful than an individual response?

If you’d be willing to answer all these questions, it would be very helpful to everyone.

(Janelle) #80

That’s two in two weeks I’ve seen run off the forum. Not sure I blame them.
