Good morning everyone and happy holiday week!

When I started keto a week ago I had been off sugar and refined carbs for 9 months so I haven’t expected to lose any water weight. I’m 5’ 6" and weigh 185. I need to take off another 45 lbs. Although my macros are in line with about 15 carbs per day my scale hasn’t budged even with excercise. When can I expect to start losing fat pounds? Also, I’m waking up during the night shivering despite warm blankets and a warm cuddly kitty. Is that a good sign or a bad sign?

probably a good sign really, whenever I’m deep into a caloric deficit, or fasting, or my water intake is super high, my finger tips and toes are generally like horrific icicles!

I’m an ex-obese person, so hate the hot weather, but now I’m within touching distance of `normal weight’ and keto adapted I am literally freezing all the time and would like to be living in Australia or in a house with the heating on full blast.

Also find that keto can interrupt my sleep for needing to pee, and just loads of unnecessary extra energy!

You should be losing weight consistently if you are controlling your calories and carb levels, have you reviewed your food intake and worked out a realistic calorie target based on age/weight/height/activity?

Being off sugar and refined carbs is good but it still does not ensure that you have not significantly slowed your metabolism over the last 9 months.

Is that the case? Are you on low daily calories (being cold might be a sign of this)? Even if moderately true, upping your keto based meal calorie counts is the answer until you are at a higher calorie intake w/o weight gain (and fully adapted). So, to answer your “how long” question - about 8 weeks plus. Then, after investing in the fat burning machinery - use it!

Randomly meal skip (or multiple per day meal skip or even skip days) to burn body fat in place of those meals but, avoid consistent daily deficit to avoid metabolic slowdown.

I believe the cold is your body telling you that you are not eating enough. Your body is saving and prioritizing energy to heat your organs and brain, at the expense of your extremities. I think if you increase your fat and even carbs a litttle, you should see improvement.

When we start ketosis, it’s not like a switch we can flip and tell the body to use fat for fuel. Your body is still probably looking for incoming carbs and is not quite yet sure what to do with fat. Try a daily cup of bulletproof coffee or simply coffee with a tablespoon of coconut oil in it. That might be just enough to get things moving in the right direction.

What these guys said. I am in the same boat, my fingers and feet are freezing sometimes. Having never felt the cold at all, this is quite new for me. I am definitely in a calorific deficit, so that backs up what they said.

A reasonable rate of fat loss is around a pound or so per week. Don’t weigh yourself for six weeks. After that you’ll have a better idea of how things are going.

No, actually I haven’t. I’ve read so much about how counting carbs is so much more important that I haven’t been counting calories. Maybe Inshould take a look at that.

It’s always worth tracking, if only at the start :slightly_smiling_face:

Yep, it allows you to cross-reference events and food (well, sometimes).
