IF and Exercise

(Karin Geertsma) #1

Hello, I’ve been IF (I usually do 20:4) for about a month now. My only concern is that I have to do my most intense workout of the day first thing in the morning, and I don’t break my fast until about 12-14 hours after that. Sometimes I will sip on BCAA throughout the day, but I haven’t noticed that making much of a difference either way. I’m concerned I’m going too long without eating after a fairly intense workout (plus walking on my breaks at work). Does anyone have any tips or info on this? I’m thinking about getting away from the fasting and just eating strictly keto throughout the day instead (I already eat keto but do the fasting as well), but I feel like my body has adjusted fairly well to the fasting and I don’t often feel super hungry during the day and don’t want to eat unnecessarily. Any info is appreciated, thanks!

Why can’t you do both? Have you listened to any of the 2Dudes podcasts? There was a good one a bit about mixing it up and how you don’t want to get in any long patterns because your body will adapt and fight you.

Let me go find the link…

I was just going to say change things up a bit. Maybe do IF on weekends and eat more regularly spaced times during the week

Thank you both! Once I get going on a routine I tend to get stuck (which I know is not always a good thing), so I think switching it up between the week and weekends is a great idea. I love all the podcasts I’ve listened to so far, I’ll give that one a listen too.

Is this cardio or weight training? For weights, then ya, having the BCAAs every couple hours until your feeding window opens would fit with the philosophy of Berkhan’s LeanGains and other folks looking to maximize muscle protein synthesis around fasted training.

It’s usually a combination of both, recently I’ve been focusing more on strength training though. On my fasting days/ strength training days I’ll keep sipping the BCAAs just to be on the safe side, thank you!
