I have inflammatory arthritis with occasional colitis type symptoms. That means that sometimes I’m not well enough to cook nor does my stomach want animal protein or fats. On these occasions my joints won’t let me prepare food. I’ve found that I don’t want scrambled eggs or similar, what I crave is toast or something like what in the UK we call biscuits: there’s one that usually I deride called a Rich Tea biscuit but that would be just right on these occasions.
Note that I’m not craving carbs, luckily I’m way past that, I just want something bland that I can chew and that will comfort my stomach. Toast, butter and yeast extract would be just right as the yeast extract would stop me feeling icky.
Is there some I could make and freeze for these times? I have problems with nut flour baked things as I find they can be heavy on my stomach.
Please don’t tell me to fast because I am asking for ideas for when I want to eat something!
Ideas for when you’re ill?
It may not be strictly keto, but every now & then I’ll have a piece of toasted or grilled Joseph’s lowcarb pita bread with some butter & Polaner “sugar-free” jam or peanut butter (or both). Keeps well in the freezer and, with a cuppa tea, hits the spot for me when I’m feeling ill but want a little comfort food that’s not typical keto fare.
Also similar is lowcarb bread, from www2.netrition.com/glc_bread_company_bread.html
I wish they would salt their dough more! but it still hits the spot.
Feel better soon!
I’m not entirely sure why the yeast extract specifically is what you say makes you feel better. But, I’d recommend salted broth. You could add butter to it if you like. It’s hot and comforting, tastes good, you can have quite a lot of it through the day, it’s generally easy on the stomach and digestive system, it helps replenish electrolytes, and it’s versatile. For example, you could microwave some steamable vegetables and have them in the broth as a mild soup. Or add some already prepared protein if you feel up to it. You could also sprinkle in nutritional yeast with it to give it an interesting nutty cheese flavor. You could also stir yeast extract into it. You said baked foods are heavy so, that takes out mug biscuits. They might be good after you feel better though.
The problem with what you’re craving is A.) It’s a craving, one you’ve developed over time that makes you mentally feel good more than anything because it’s really not doing your body good. B.) The foods you’re thinking of raise blood glucose which raises insulin. Neither of which help in healing inflammation which is what you are experiencing during flare ups.
I’m sorry I don’t have much to offer for suggestions but I can sympathize and relate to your struggle. I love the way I feel and look when eating this way but with chronic colitis and several food sensitivities, it does become challenging at times, and especially when we’re under the weather or we want/need some comfort food.
I occasionally make the 90 second keto bread but you said the nut flours bother you. Fat bombs could be comforting but they are full of fat so perhaps that would bother your stomach, too. A creamy, cheesy meal would be comforting but I can’t tolerate dairy, can you?
Perhaps if you are fully fat adapted you can get away with indulging in an occasional biscuit? I don’t think you’d get kicked out of ketosis with just a slight indiscretion, and even if you did you’d get back in quickly.
Good luck, and feel better.
Sue
It’s not a craving as I manage without and haven’t actually eaten anything like that for years, nor would I, hence I’m asking for alternatives. I haven’t anything like it in the house and never buy it. The reason I say yeast extract is just because I like the taste and felt queasy. Toast is comfort food I remember from when I was little. I don’t want broth or animal protein; I wanted something bland to chew on, as I said, I had an upset gut.
It’s not that baked goods are heavy, it’s that I find baked goods using nut flour are heavy. And these days I only eat meat and veg, I don’t bake.
I realise that stuff’s not good- that’s why I’m asking for an alternative! Yup. Believe me. Know about inflammation.
Thanks so much for your reply and understanding. Part of the problem is just no longer having this stuff in the house. I’m ok with dairy usually but couldn’t face that. Now it’s over I’m thinking that chewing a piece of paper might have done the job!
I’m thinking that I might get in ingredients for a Keto porridge for next time and there are plenty of recipes on here. In the end I had a mug of warmed almond milk and that was comforting and bland x
Thank you I might try that! In the end I had a mug of warmed almond milk which was soothing. Perhaps we could invent a Konjac cracker!
