I have been losing weight steadily on keto, but always seem to get cravings after I eat dinner–I miss my evening ice cream! Would 1-2 ounces of cream cheese work? Anyone else have any snack ideas?
Ideas for snacks
snacking is not generally recommended on a keto diet. ideally, you want to be eating x amount of square meals daily without snacking inbetween, especially when it pertains to weight loss. but, for the sake of responding to what you inquired about, some keto ‘snacks’ that i enjoy are hard boiled eggs, olives, pork rinds, bacon smeared with cream cheese, pecans, macadamia nuts, cheese sticks, pepperoni, handful of baby spinach / kale (can add dressing and vinegar too, of course), beef sticks, avocado, dark chocolate, cheese crisps (store bought or quickly homemade in the microwave), deli meat rolled up with a slice of cheese and a dab of mayo/mustard. there’s a bunch of keto-friendly snack type foods you can make using coconut and/or almond flour also if it interests you
also, what types of foods are you eating? i’m going to go ahead and say that your post-dinner cravings can be attributed to one of the following: something you’re eating is causing it, you’re having carb withdrawals due to having just recently started following keto, or you’re simply not eating enough
Why not make some Keto ice cream? I found some great ones on Pinterest that are made in mason jars. A few spoon fulls take the cravings away.
On that note, please go to www.mariamindbodyhealth.com and look for her free ice cream recipes. They are sooooo good and super simple to make generally. I’ve made a few of them and they are so good!!
If you want to snack that much it’s possible you’re not getting enough protein. Some of Keto gets twisted and I’ve been in your shoes. I did a deeper search and started following more trustworthy, committed Keto leaders and doctors. Keto is more about fat but protein is a very close second. Try the website I mentioned above and read a little about her story and her info. She’s very generous with her knowledge. You won’t have to pay for the good info.
After dinner snack for me consists of 100% cocoa bar pieces licked and dipped into a spenda packet, salt and cinnamon or sometimes pork rinds (plain) made into cinnamon churros. Mostly it’s just my bit of chocolate though.
My ice cream replacement is frozen mixed berries blended with heavy whipping cream and half a packet of equal. Maybe add a square of dark chocolate to that. The berries freeze the cream, the immersion blender makes the texture.
If our goal is weight loss and correcting insulin resistance, then avoiding snacks increases the amount of time in which insulin at rest and increases more opportunity for burning fat.
While snacking might not break your keto, you will probably be more successful without it.
In all my years of keto my best is homemade jerky.
Zero carbs, fairly cheap, and better than nuts, chips etc.
Also it works for carnivores.
$59 dehydrator on Amazon, $4 lb or less ‘select’ eye of round. (Lean and cheap is fine for jerky.)
NESCO FD-75A, Snackmaster Pro Food Dehydrator, Gray
You can also dry jerky in the oven but the little (cheap) machine is worth the money to me. Takes about 6+ hours for 3 lbs.
Salt and spices you like. I like to add garlic.
I find myself eating pickles at night after dinner. I eat a spear or 2 drink a bottle of water and make myself go to bed. It usually is enough to satiate me.
I’m a fan of making keto cheesecake bites. I’ll eat one when I have a sweet craving. If you want a non sweet snack I’ll have some ParmeCrisps with a slice of cheese on top.
The point of a well-formulated ketogenic diet is to lower insulin and to keep it as low as possible for as much of the day as possible. With that in mind, it’s most productive to eat as few times a day as possible, since every time we eat, or even snack, it raises our insulin level.
The OP was asking FOR snack ideas though. If I was told from the beginning I shouldn’t snack I doubt I would’ve stayed with LCHF. When well intentioned people suggest such things it can really disappoint new ones. A major reason for going low carb was to avoid hunger, not embrace it. Hunger will dissipate naturally. I disagree with telling them to push through it basically.
personally, i’m glad it was recommended to me to try to eat enough at meals so that i didn’t feel the need to snack in-between when i was first starting keto… i believe i had better results more quickly because of it and am thankful that the info was shared with me nobody ever said snacking isn’t allowed, but it’s important to know that it may slow down your overall progress a bit versus eating square meals only. not snacking doesn’t have to translate to being hungry as long as you’re eating enough at meal time. i know i haven’t been hungry since i started!
I agree.
I am as guilty as anyone of this.
People are at the taking baby steps level in their first few weeks, ask a question about a mitigation or next little step and are instead deluged with pro-level tips. I’m going to try to keep this in mind more when I deal with newbies.
It is possible that 1 - 2 oz of cream cheese would work; i think that is one you have to try for yourself. i know i have tried that and it hasn’t worked for me (it didn’t hit the sweet need). i am still trying to figure out ways to fight my sweet teeth. when i have been more successful, i was using a salty peanut butter fat bomb (or three) after dinner and throughout the day. i also had success with coconut macaroons
do you have a feeling on if the cravings are “simply” psychological or more physiological? for me the need for sweets is still hard to determine if it is actually physiological (doubtful, other than what all addictions cause) or psychologically-induced physiological need (meaning years of desserts after a meal leading to still needing the sweets).
