I’m just not hungry anymore

Hi, all :wave:t2: First, I would like to say thank you all for the abundance of information you have each contributed to this forum. It has answered so many of my dumb newbie questions & really helped me transition into this new WOE.

I am on day 8 of Keto & today my hunger hit an all time low. Most days I find it hard to even come close to my suggested caloric intake. Aside from the first couple of days, I usually go to bed consuming between 700 & 900 calories. With that said, I am still able to stay within my overall macro percentages.

Typically, I wouldn’t be all that concerned as I have read many times before, “Eat when you’re hungry, don’t eat if you’re not,” but this morning I had to choke down the last quarter of my avocado. & again it was the same for lunch. I had 2 boiled eggs & could barely swallow the last half.

I am still on three meals a day because I have found that if I try to wait it out until noon, I tend to want to snack. Hopefully I’ll have this kink worked out fairly quickly.

To keep this short, my main question is; Should I be forcing myself to eat just to reach my calorie goal? At what point does this become detrimental to my metabolism? As of right now I only have 675 calories & zero desire to eat anything else.

Nope, it will come back, I promise. I went through the exact same thing and found myself eating 700-900 calories at the most and just did not want to eat. I suspect I wasn’t getting proper electrolytes. What helped get me over the lack of appetite and occasional nausea was chicken broth or tea with cream. If I couldn’t stomach a meal I’d have that and within an hour or two I’d feel hungry. I still wasn’t eating a ton, but I actually felt hunger and wanted to eat. And when I did eat, it would be something easy like string cheese or some bacon.

In the following weeks my appetite got huge and I was really enjoying eating again and then it just went back to normal. I also eat three meals a day, always have since starting.

Well, that’s refreshing.

I was beginning to wonder if our answers were secretly being deleted, so new members couldn’t find them and would go ahead and start a new thread to ask their question.

My unscientific, lazy-keto mind thinks as long as you aren’t snacking between meals, and keeping your daily carbs low (20g), then I wouldn’t worry about meeting a calorie goal. If you’re full, you’re full. Don’t sweat that half an egg, or quarter avocado. Just be happy your tummy is satisfied.

It will definetly start to slowdown ur metabolism with 675 cals, you could try more caloric dense foods. If ur interested in basic stuff about metabolic rate u can listen to this: http://2ketodudes.com/show.aspx?episode=61

From what I understand, there’s a difference between not being hungry and being hungry but not giving your body food (when it wants it). This should be temporary. You’re only 8 days in.

Good to hear! I spend quite a bit of time researching & have found several topics regarding “starvation mode,” which I really want to avoid. But, if this seems to be a normal part of the transition them I am fine just riding it out while only eating when I am hungry.

Up until this morning I have been drinking my BPC when I wake but, this morning I wasn’t interested. Strange, because I cannot remember a single day within the last 15 years that I have not started my day with coffee. This morning I opted for a green tea kombucha & loved it. I actually had 2 today, the second without cream.

I have been trying to monitor my electrolytes as well as possible. I recently upped my sodium intake to at least 2000mgs. I drank copious amounts of pickle juice today!

I will try to hang tight & eat as much as I can stomach. Thank you for responding :slightly_smiling_face:

I definitely will, thank you!

I’ll have to try green tea kombucha! I did BPC in the beginning but it was too much fat for me, I didn’t like it. I switched back to good old coffee with cream and that’s still what I have every morning.

Ha! No … most people are just too lazy to use the search function  That little :mag: has been my best friend

I definitely keep my carbs well under 20. Usually closer to 10/11 max. Thanks for the reassurance, if I can’t eat that last piece of egg I’ll just save it for a salad or something.

Maybe try my favorite snack.
Smear cream cheese on bacon and enjoy.

I do bacon & brie or goat cheese about every other day. So good!

I’ve cooked so much bacon recently that I’ve had to switch to a bigger container for all my grease.

I am about 3 months into my keto lifestyle and for past 7 to 8 weeks I have felt just like you @christylaine . I am doing great to eat 700 to 900 calories a day, but some days I do go over and actually hit my calorie goal of 1200. I tend to reach my macro goals too, and at this point I am only eating 2 meals a day lunch and dinner and doing IF from 7 PM until noon the next day.
Everyone tells me just eat when hungry and when I start to get closer to my goal weight I will become more hungry as I am depleting fat stores. Makes sense to me! Welcome to the keto fan club!

I wouldn’t if I were you. Just eat what meals you need so you don’t snack. As in, if you’re not hungry in the am but know you won’t be able to make it until lunch, then eat lunch a bit earlier. Or make it a late breakfast. Doesn’t matter what you call it. Just wait to eat until you’re hungry, then wait to eat the next “meal” until you’re hungry again. If that’s the next day, that’s ok. If you’re listening to your body’s signals, you’ll be fine!

Same for me. The body’s natural response to losing a lot of weight in a short amount of time is to increase our hunger to encourage us to recoup the losses. I went about a month of eating half the calories I would normally eat.

(Christy) #17

Thank you! Yesterday I was right below 1000 & felt great. I have been looking into IF & I am thinking about giving it a go this coming week. Wish me luck!

Also, really toying with the idea of eliminating dairy every other week. I’m curious to see the benefits.

Poorly worded, sorry about that. By “as much as I can stomach,” I meant until full.

I am giving your advice a try today. I am having brunch at around 10a, & not eating again until I am hungry. Hopefully that’s not until after my chicken is done roasting but, we’ll see.

Thanks for the advice :slightly_smiling_face:
