I have a first date... what to drink?

#1

Oh no. I have a first date in a couple of days. Meeting for “drinks” at a really nice local place. What can I drink?

I looked up lower carb options but wondered if any of you have secret tricks for drinking while Keto.

(Cristian Lopez) #2

sparkling water, seltzer, diet coke, diet soda

  • or
Vodka, Whiskey, Lite beer, White claw, Brandy

Dont ask how I know this, just know I’m a human Keto database that knows everything about Keto…
and please please please moderation, The more you drink the longer it will take to get back into ketosis.

Just to add, careful on drinking. If you haven’t drank for awhile and been Keto for a bit. When I first drank after being Keto awhile it didn’t take much to be drunk.

#4

Also fyi, keto decreases many people’s alcohol tolerance, be careful. I wouldn’t advise a first date without ANY alcohol though!

#5

coffee + MCT oil

I read about a K(eto)-ocktail that mimicked Irish cream on the latest 2KetoDudes podcast: espresso + Irish whiskey + heavy cream (if gut tolerated) + hint of vanilla. So it depends if it is a cocktaily type of event. I reckon just one of these slowly sipped would work with a side dish of nice triple brie and pork crackling.

Have fun on your first date.

Maybe the question would be better framed in the negative? What not to drink on a first date.

Your post certainly does highlight one of the pitfalls of being keto and that is perception in social situations. Thanks for bringing it forward for us to think on.

Since it is a first date; and alcohol I have heard really affects us much more when being Keto, I would probably avoid drinking alcohol -as per the advice of everyone above =).

Since this is the first time meeting him; you want your full wits about you, so you can accurately assess him as well.

If it goes to a second, after a good first one, maybe one of the options that @KidKeto mentioned.

The important thing is to enjoy yourself, but be aware. Nice to be relaxed, but not sozzled!
Personally I would have a gin and slimline tonic, if he buys the first round. Then I would insist on buying the next round and have a tonic water with ice and lemon! Looks the same.
Have fun!

Club soda with lime? We don’t drink at all, so at a social gathering with alcohol, that’s what we chose. The important thing is to get to know him and enjoy yourself!

So many good ideas and great advice everyone. Thank you!

I will sip slowly.
I will have one gin and tonic with lime.
I will also try to eat something before I get there.
I will try to have fun.
I will not get snozzled.

First date in 8 - yes EIGHT - years. YEARS.
Fingers crossed!

It’s been around 100 degrees F here but when it gets cooler, your warm drink ideas will come in handy for sure. I used to love an Irish coffee.

#11

I don’t even drink and that sounds delicious!

('Jackie P') #12

Aww I do hope he is really nice

#13

Thank you. Me, too! I’ll post an update afterwards. :hugs:

@TimeForMe Loads of great advice above.

So, since it sounds like you’re comfortable having alcohol on this first date (i.e., “meeting for drinks”), then consider ordering a single glass of a nice dry red wine (= fairly low carb) and then nurse it along slowly throughout the entire date. When asked for a second, politely say “no thanks, one glass is fine” with a smile.

You’ll feel relaxed. And make a nice first impression to boot (even more so if your date is picking up the tab?)

But now … the really BIG question: After spending time with him, is he worthy? Let us know!

@SomeGuy
I do love a super dry red wine. But, 50% of the time I drink wine, I experience Asian Flush. (My face gets bright red, I feel hot and like I’m on fire inside.) It’s not horrible but with my luck, it’ll happen and he’d be getting a very interesting first impression.

I considered champagne too. For some reason I don’t react to it and I think is relatively low carb for a single glass. Champagne on a first date would be weird though.

If he’s not worthy, I won’t even stick around for drink #2! Hehe

(Jane Srygley) #16

I can’t seem to drink anything without getting sick now that I’m doing keto. I’ve heard that keto makes you a “cheap date.” I love my wine but I don’t even bother anymore :frowning:

(Jane Srygley) #17

Yes please do so we know you haven’t been kidnapped

(Susan) #18

This was exactly my concern with staying sober =).

And yes, my kids are always telling me I am over paranoid, but we all like you here and don’t want anything bad happening to you is all =)).

#19

@AuntJane @Momof5

Awww thanks. Don’t worry.
I’m meeting him at the restaurant. Very public place with lots of foot traffic outside.

And my personality is pretty strong, such that no one in their right mind would consider kidnapping me. hehe

Seriously, I am very cautious and stay aware of my surroundings. My family will have his photo and phone number just in case.

(Susan) #20

Okay, good! Did you tell your son you are going on the first date in 8 years? He will probably be over-protective and wanting to check him out soon after if he becomes your bf =).
