Huge n=1 fail

(Joe) #1

So yesterday started like anyone day. However I was about to embark on a little bit of self experimentation. I have been very happy with my keto results. I have gone down from 190 pounds to 169 since sometime early Feb. My skeletal muscle has been maintained and I feel awesome. I have been pretty strict with only carbs being typically around 10-20g.

I figured I wanted to try to put on a bit more muscle so before my Sunday morning training I decided I would do the following.

  1. Try a modest carb up of 2 medium red potato cooked in olive oil and covered with cheddar
  2. supplement pre workout with l-glutamine
  3. post work supplement with full bcaa (picked up on the store on the way home)

My work out was this

  1. super slow lat pull downs, chest press, shoulder press, rows
  2. 3 400 meter splits at 10 mile/hour with walk slow job 400s in between for 1.5 mi.

Got home and felt great vacuumed, cleaned, played with kids. During the afternoon we went to a family members house for a late easter gathering. I decided I was going to have a 2.6 carb michelob ultra which went down smooth over 40 minutes. Uncle brought some Bourbon and poured me a finger. Around this time I didnt start to feel right foggy thinking and feeling a little flush. I couldnt finish the bourbon and snuck to the bathroom and dumped it out. There were a few moments where I was so foggy I felt drunk, became more flushed like my face was burning then got some chills. I was super fatigued. Texted my wife in the other room and she offered to head out but I decided it was probably just the carbs and it would pass with fat. So I found the fattiest peices of the ham i could and ate .Only other keto semi-freindly food was chicken and potentially a cucumber salad with what appeared to be oil dressing. That made up my plate and I went back for single peices of fatty ham a few times. I found my self on the couch watching tv and feel asleep. Woke up around time to go felt like I had a fever and had to have wife drive home.

Maybe I was just coming down with something but I felt like I had a horrible hangover too. Very lethargic didnt want to speak or move.

After 45 min drive home I was marginally better to the point I was able to help put the kids down but my headache worsened and fatigue increased. I popped two Exedrin. During the night I could not get warm. Though never had a fever. Literally felt like I was sleeping in the elements. Also I began to get pain in toes but being so fatigued and exhausted I just shut it out.

Woke up exhausted and hungover again with continued pain in my toes. Called into work told them it aint happening. Only thing I could think about was sleep and water. Took the kids to school and here I sit in bed feeling about 50% better but no where close to keto strength.

End result. I think I may have given myself gout and carb flu.

As soon as I read this I imagined myself imagining where my next ā€œdoseā€ of carby food lie…

I overindulged just a little the other day and it took me til the next morning to feel any better…

Back on the horse!

Ok so apparently easter ham was a bastard…

(Doug) #4

Joe, have you had gout attacks before? While not impossible, for it to be on both sides of the body and among all the toes, versus just one big toe, is rare indeed.

(Pete A) #5

Yes, a bastard.

(Joe) #6

No I hadn’t. I’m beginning to think maybe its not gout actually. I didn’t realize the ham had all the carbs… SUPER MAD ABOUT THAT. Toes could be from the sprints which was new to yesterday.

(Joe) #7

Very well could have taken in 200 carbs yesterday…

(Doug) #8

Yeah - and usually gout takes longer to manifest after eating the activating substances, if that’s the cause.

(Joe) #9

Definitely makes me feel better. The wife was a little worried about that and she has been super supportive of my keto and yesterday was the first day she expressed any concern

I might try the n=1 a bit different, with a purer glucose format directly after the workout. I had very good results taking about 25g in the form of sport beans (basically electrolyte infused jelly beans) after working out hard and no deleterious effect. No cravings and attendant issues with sweets or carbs… a bit better recovery, but that’s about it.

(Joe) #11

Why after? I was thinking of using it for energy to up my effectiveness at the gym. No honestly I’m think of just leaving well enough alone since I have been getting my goals. Today has not been fun.

Glycogen repletion. You do the lifts, you burn your ATP and your modest, keto glycogen stores… your muscular insulin sensitivity should be high after a workout, so it’s a preferential place to stash the sugar…

I had some research on why I did this, from ten years ago. I don’t recall the full why of it, but after worked, before with slower carbs might work as well. Potato is pretty fast, in terms of glycemic index. Steel cut oats before, or something with straight sugar after. <100g… I, being fairly cautious at the time, limited to <30.

And sometimes you just get sick. This afternoon I developed an actuall fever and feel much worse than this morning with body aches but the fog has lifted .Could have been rotten luck That this hit a meer 6 hours after my carb up

(Shelly frey) #14

The potatoes and ham probably took you out of ketosis.

I think what made you sick was the alcohol . You have to be very careful about drinking. It doesn’t take much alcohol when you’re keto. Two small drinks is all I can handle . Any more , I’m sick as a dog for a few days.

Good luck!

(Rob) #15

Yeah, Not gout. Keto gives me gout. I had it before and as I flush my adipose tissue, I get new attacks. Probably doesn’t help that I eat a shit-ton of bacon :bacon::scream:

I’m lucky I’ve never had it in 2 joints at once (though I’ve had it all over - knee, elbow, heal, toes) and I have good anti inflammatories. A friend was susceptible to it before and then lost 2lbs a day for a while on chemo and it brought on a full double footed mega attack. Had to be carried to an ambulance for his last chemo visit.

(Doug) #16

Rob, I’ve felt it a few times - yes, burning our stored fat brings stuff dissolved in that fat back into our bloodstream. It’s never gotten as bad nor as prolonged as my worst attacks (thank goodness) back when it was my diet doing it, i.e. a good bit of booze and a monstrous amount of beef, usually, for days in a row.

Knock on wood, as they say - my big toes are cringing, just thinking about it. The pain of a serious gout attack… I do admit it’s fascinating - how ā€˜alive’ with pain a joint can be.

(Joe) #17

Yeh the toe pain didn’t amount to much. I think hypochondriac nature for the best of me. I can chalk that up probably to running.

(Joe) #18

Yeh pretty sure I am out. Being sick probably isn’t helping either. First real set back in this journey and I’m not fretting just back to it. I typically still drink 1-4 a week they have just been bourbons. No ill side effects but I never chased it with a bunch of carbs… Kinda feel dumb in that regard should have known better.

Lesson learned ketosis feels too good to give up for stupid food or attempts to boost my performance. I’m going to keep doing what has worked and be patient. Once I get to ~15% body fat I’ll worry about putting on more muscle. I should have been thrilled that I have lost 20 pounds of pure fat without losing any muscle but I got greedy.

(Joe) #19

So the fever has not gone away come on every afternoon and in the.middle of the night. No other symptoms. Has anyone had a low grade fever in response to carb UPS or returning to ketosis after falling out?
