HOW TO: Navigate the Forum

This is a copy of the Welcome message new users get when they sign up for an account. I’m reposting it here to make it easy to find later.

We’ve created a new account your name here You can change your name by visiting [your user profile -> preferences

To log in again later:

  1. Always use the same email address from your original invitation when logging in. Otherwise we won’t be able to tell it’s you!

  2. Create a unique password for [your user profile][prefs], and use it to log in.

Here are a few quick tips to get you started:

To read more, just keep scrolling down!

As new replies or new topics arrive, they will appear automatically – no need to refresh the page.

  • For search, your user page, or the menu, use the icon buttons at upper right.

  • Selecting a topic title will always take you to your next unread reply in the topic. To enter at the top or bottom instead, select the reply count or last reply date.

  • While reading a topic, use the timeline on the right to jump to the top, bottom, or your last read position. On smaller screens, select the progress bar at bottom right to expand it:

You can also press ? on your keyboard for a list of super-speedy keyboard shortcuts.

To insert a quote, select the text you wish to quote, then press any Reply button to open the editor. Repeat for multiple quotes.

You can always continue reading while you compose your reply, and we automatically save drafts as you write.

To notify someone about your reply, mention their name. Type @ to begin selecting a username.

To use standard Emoji, just type : to match by name, or use the traditional smileys ;)

To generate a summary for a link, paste it on a line by itself:

Your reply can be formatted using simple HTML, BBCode, or Markdown:

This is bold.
This is [b]bold[/b].
This is **bold**.

For more formatting tips, try our fun 10 minute interactive tutorial!

There are action buttons at the bottom of each post:

  • To let someone know that you enjoyed and appreciated their post, use the like button. Share the love!

  • Grab a copy-pasteable link to any reply or topic via the link button.

  • Use the show more button to reveal more actions. Flag to privately let the author, or our staff, know about a problem. Bookmark to find this post later on your profile page.

When someone replies to you, quotes your post, mentions your @username, or even links to your post, a number will immediately appear at the top right of the page. Select it to access your notifications.

Don’t worry about missing a reply – you’ll be emailed any notifications that arrive when you are away.

  • All topics less than two days old are considered new.

  • Any topic you’ve actively participated in (by creating it, replying to it, or reading it for an extended period) will be automatically tracked on your behalf.

You will see the new and unread number indicators next to these topics:

You can change your notifications for any topic via the notification control at the bottom, and right hand side, of each topic.

You can also set notification state per category, if you want to watch or mute every new topic in a specific category.

To change any of these settings, see your user preferences.

What's your favorite part of the new forum versus the Facebook page?

Added keyboard shortcuts image to original post.

I really wish the flag symbol and the bookmark symbol were separated - I believe I may have flagged you by mistake. Is there a way to unflag a flag?

I don’t think the flag takes effect unless you click one of the options and submit it. We shall see…

Ah, yes, that makes sense. Phew!

I mostly navigate the forum mouse free now.

Using g, u and g, n to get to the list of topics I want.

The use j or k to scroll up and down the list.

Use Enter to go into the topic you want to read, and j/k to go to next/prev message or space bar to scroll down in the message you are reading.

Once I’ve hit all the topics I want I use x, r to mark everything read. FYI: I have changed my settings to sow everything I haven’t seen as new, rather than anything less than 2 days old.

When I want to reply, I just hit q, type my reply, then hit TAB and Enter to post it.

It has really speed up my navigating the forum.

The only think I wish for is a keyboard shortcut to mark a topic as read.

Is there a way to change my user name? Thanks

What does “Robot Check” mean if you post two links in the same post??? Is there a way to confirm it’s not spam so the link will show?

There’s a filter that runs in background which identifies links that have a history of being flagged as spam. Kind of like the spam filter in email. It is not always accurate. It goes off on Amazon links quite a lot. A staff member has to approve posts that set off the detector.
Can you still submit the post?

Changing your username after setting up the account will unlink any previous posts from your account. If you need to do this, @richard can help you.

(Richard Morris) #11

Ask an admin and if it’s not taken we can change it for you (or find someone who can)

(Keto Troll) #12

Oh then it’s not worth it. Thanks

(Keto Troll) #13

Thank you Richard

(Steve Stephenson) #14

How do you do that?

My question would be: How can I show a time stamp on posts?

But I can’t find a place to ask it.

(I like to post memes!) #15

@sks23cu if you click or hover over the time since posted, #m, #h, #d, it will display the timestamp of the post. It varies depending on how you access the site.

On my iPhone, I touch on your post where it said “5m” and the timestamp was displayed:

(Steve Stephenson) #16

But where do I go to post/ask a general question?

I use Keto chat :grinning:

Where is Keto chat?
