How to end a fast

(Marfi) #1

I’m fairly new to fasting (I’ve only done 2) but both times I’ve really mucked up my first meal when deciding to end. My plan both times was to have something small, like say, a handful of macadamias or a fried egg, then ease myself into gradually bigger meals through the day when I got hungry. But… once I started eating, I felt like I just couldn’t stop. So then I ended up eating way too much and feeling full, bloated and nauseous for a while after. I hate that feeling of not being in control of my eating.

I thought that maybe next time, say an hour or so before I plan to start eating, I will try having some salt (to take the edge off any hunger), then drink a few glasses of water and a cup of tea. Then try with the small meal and see if that helps stop the compulsion to eat everything in sight! Living with a binge eating disorder most of my life, I wonder if fasting can be a trigger for me? I love the benefits and want to continue regular fasting, so any suggestions would be very welcome!

Those are good ideas. Another idea: what I do is make sure I break my fast at breakfast, I go to my local cafe and I have bacon and eggs. Of course I could have another round, but being a cheapskate, I never do. Having to buy another breakfast is enough enertia to stop any bingeing.

Lol  That’s actually a great idea! I’ll try that next time… thank you

I think it’s a passage of time thing, you have to experience it this way, eventually your body directs you more concisely. My first 3 fasts ended with me eating way too much that my stomach hurt. My last 2 have been very sensible and measured, I believe I’ve matured or tamed my stomach into a more reasonable side kick.

Thank you, that’s very reassuring!

That is really strange.
For me, I have to force myself to end my fast, then I have to really force myself to eat that re-feed!

I have the same problem, that is eating everything after a fast. I am going to try the salted water, hot tea ideas you mentioned during the last four hours this time. Then, the diner idea about going out for breakfast! So smart! One more thing I would like to do is make broth in advance next time for a light meal that is also filling.

I am on an open ended fast right now, 36hrs in. One thing I would recommend to everyone: don’t listen to the latest episode of 2KD while on a fast! It was torture!:rofl::exploding_head:

So I got some beef femur bones and three chicken wings. I’m planning to drink the broth at the end of my fast, then eat the wings about 4 hours later. Hopefully this eases me back into eating without that ravenous feeling.

Now 60hrs into my open ended fast. Feeling great. Have a busy day today… no sign of wanting to stop yet.

I have never done an open ended fast before, and don’t really know what will end it… anybody got some experience of open ended fasts want to tell of their experience?

Lucky you! I hope that will happen the more I fast
