How much Fat if I'm at 48% body fat

(Anna) #1

I am at 48% body fat. I weigh 167 lbs, 5’ 1", 62 years young woman. I am trying this KETO way of eating and if I get hungry I will have a tablespoon of fat. I don’t have to do this all the time, though.
I have not lost any weight, but I expect this. But I have read that perhaps since my body weight is so high I should cut down on my fat consumption.

The question is this: How much fat (number of tablespoons ) should I be eating daily at 48% body fat?

Hi - If you are at 48% BF, then you have roughly 80 lbs of fat on your frame.

The main thing with Keto is — keep carbs low - at or under 20 grams. This is the premise of the diet – To change your fuel source from glucose to fat. A few questions:

  • are you logging your food? this helps with looking at your macros to keep carbs low and protein moderate, the rest of the meal can be fat to satiety
  • There are a ton of sneaky carbs, so it’s important to keep carbs low, more so than just eating fat
  • Your aim should be to get into ketosis and get keto adapted. This means changing your fuel source from burning glucose to running on ketones. Once you are fat adapted, and you are fueled by the ketones you are manufacturing, you can rely on body fat to supply your energy. Then you can re-evaluate what you are eating and change your macros.

There are a number of people on here that can also help and chime in. Good luck and keep asking questions from this community.

Here is a helpful calculator on fasting and fat requirements. Use it as a rough rule of thumb, and tweak to see what works for you.
