How much can you lose doing a 24 hour fast?

(Fred Buchanan) #1

What have bee your typical results?

Thanks

(Allie) #2

Never noticed much difference from just 24 hours.

(Duncan Kerridge) #3

Same here

Nothing noticeable for me either.
The magic seems to happen 48+ Hours.

Figuring out how to even measure weight loss in one day is the hard part. I’ve seen my own weight fluctuate by over five pounds in a day, nearly all of which is due to changes in the amount of water in my body.

That said…

If you were to burn 2000 (kilo)calories of fat in a day, that amounts to 222 grams of fat or nearly half a pound.

However, doing a one day fast most likely won’t burn that much fat since you’re body will prefer to first fuel itself with glycogen from the liver and muscle. That’s why an extended fast is so powerful - once you burn through your glycogen in days one and two, you’ll be mostly burning fat after that.

That’s not to say that you won’t see a rather dramatic weight loss during those first day or two - you most likely will, but the majority of it will be water.

Kevin - Thanks.

Three or four days seems serious, but I’m game.

We have a Biggest Loser Contest going on at work, with a $650 winner takes all kitty.

Our final weigh in is on Friday morning.

I’m going to start after dinner tonight, and weigh myself tomorrow morning. I’ll check back in then with my weight, and again on Friday.

Okay - Next dumb question!! This is my first time fasting for this long.

Is Iced Tea fasting-friendly, or am I on only water?

Thanks

#8

Iced tea is fine - just make sure it’s not sweetened.

Thanks Kevin - If I can lose another 6.6 lbs by Friday, I should win.

I had a setback a couple weeks ago. I re-injured my back from a Nov 17 car accident, and had to take steroids for the inflammation for a week. threw my game off completely.

(Fred Buchanan) #10

Okay - Starting weight this morning was 237.4

I’ll check back in 24, 48, and 72 hours.

Good luck to you! I hope you win, but please make sure that the possibility of winning doesn’t make you forget the cardinal rule of fasting, which is to pay attention to how you feel.

You might be a bit fatigued at times, but if you’re fat adapted you should generally feel pretty good (or you should stop!).

#12

I don’t really lose doing a 24 hour fast, maybe a pound if anything. I tend to lose more weight when I’m eating.

(Fred Buchanan) #13

Madeleine,

Thanks. I think I’m good on the adaption. I’m monitoring my ketosis through test strips and I’m on the high side of things. I had a urinalysis done on 4/23 and I was 80 (2+) mg/dL. I know this can fluctuate quickly by food choices, but I’ve been very consistent and dedicated with eating correctly.

Right now I feel great. (I’m always a bit tired, I have a 4 & 7 year old! )

First 24 hours. I feel fine, not hungry. Stomach feel odd, empty, but not hungry. Is this normal?

(Fred Buchanan) #15

Big drop - 237.4 to 233.6.

Yesterday was tough as the day progressed

Today I feel fine.

#16

Congrats.

I usually feel hungry at the 24 hour point and then occasionally going into day 2.

Longest I’ve fasted so far is about 64 hours - not quite 3 days. My wife making food for me is what trips me up. She’s on board with keto, but not with extended fasting.

(Fred Buchanan) #17

62 Hours in to this…

Down from 233.6 to 231.0

Felling tired, but not hungry. Making dinner last night for the family was minorly depressing! LOL!

I’ll be done in less than 24 hours…

My total duration should be around 85 hours…

Yes!

(Fred Buchanan) #19

Hi Liz,

It’s how I feel right now.

My wife was quizzing me last night.

Her: “Aren’t you starving/hungry?”

Me: “Actually, I’m not hungry at all.” (As I prepared battered fish and french fires for her and my two girls for dinner.)

Her: “I thought you’d be doing at least a Ketond (Product Name) shake.”

Me: “No, nothing since around 6:30pm on Monday night.”

Her: “Wow…”

Fasting feels odd to me, that empty echoey feeling, but yeah, not actually hunger! LOL your wife, my husband is used to it now, I’ve been fasting since July of last year :grinning: In my opinion the hardest part of fasting is convincing other people you aren’t anorexic or have some other eating disorder and you aren’t going to faint away in front of them.
