Hoodwinked by Labeling!

newbies

I created this new topic for everyone to use to bring attention to labels that could lead a keto newbie astray (or even hoodwink us veterans).

I normally am a careful shopper and religious label reader, but this one got me in Costco a few days ago because … well … Christmas. Since the first ingredient is agave nectar, I won’t be using it. For Newbies - that’s SUGAR. They just made the serving size small enough that they could legally say zero calories.

Like Spenda, Whole Earth has different versions. I use the Stevia/Monkfruit blend but there’s also a Sugar/Stevia blend and a pure Erythritol version. They’re 99% Identical and without the label you can’t really tell them apart.

Agave isn’t zero carb. Is there such a tiny amount that is can be ignored or is it a straight up error? :cowboy_hat_face:

Why bother with stevia/monk fruit if it’s gonna start off with something so horrible?? It’s akin to high fructose corn syrup for eff’s sake!

It is the first ingredient! They can only claim zero calories because the serving size reduces the calories to under .5 kCal per 1/8 tsp. That’s what pissed me off so much.

EGGGZ-ACTLY!!

Better read the label again! This says stevia/monkfruit on the front & the bottles, but the first ingredient is agave nectar.

Dr. Weil says “agave has a higher fructose content than any other common sweetener, more even than high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).”

They also have the Stevia/monk fruit/Erythritol blend
In the powder packet form
They have or offer at a Starbucks

Most other options Or sugar substitutes have Dextrose as an ingredient or blend😳

Be careful

I was at Marshall’s today and almost bought a bottle of Martha Stewart vanilla paste for $20. Fortunately, while in the checkout line, I happened to read the ingredients. Very first ingredient was sugar! Saved myself $20 lol
