High blood glucose on extended fast

(Jeff) #1

A quick question why would my blood glucose be high on an extended fast?
I was on a 48 hour fast and checked my glucose at 24 and 48 hours.
the 48 hour reading was 116 and 114 after 49 hours . This seems to be a common theme
with me. Is this common?

What time of day did you test? Morning?

(Jeff) #3

2pm both days

So no dawn phenomenon then. What was your BG at that time before your fast? Any pre-fast data to compare it to?

between 98-105

I believe Dr. Fung says this is normal and a result of hormones such as noradrenalin and some type of growth hormone. I’m heading out so can’t google it, but I bet if you google those terms with Fung you’ll get some peace of mind.

Those hormones along with glucagon, tell the liver to release glucose into your bloodstream when they sense your low blood sugars levels are sending you toward hypoglyemia. It’s just your hormones and your liver doing their jobs. Even though we don’t eat a lot of carbs (in your case none for a few days), the liver has ways of storing and even making glucose. Glucose may not be the main fuel, but we still need and use it.

Thanks for the info I’ll check it out

Look into adaptive glucose sparing. It’s when your muscles prefer fat and turn down using glucose to save it for the brain/red blood cells. But your liver just likes making more glucose than those can use at once.

I have the same issue. I’m getting a sleeve of blood tests done including insulin to make sure my fasting insulin is low even if my BG registers 90-115 typically anytime.

Interestingly though, my BG used to get into 60s & 70s when I first started keto 4 mos ago. Probably because my insulin hadn’t balanced down and was still doing it’s job shuttling BG into cells. ? Or muscles weren’t denying the glucose.

That’s a good point. I’ve had resent blood work and my fasting insulin was 5.
I’ve been doing keto for a year and my glucose never varies much from those numbers
although my a1c has come down a bit from 7.2 to 6.1
