Heinz Tomato Ketchup No Added Sugar and Salt fibre content

(Wendell Urth) #1

Hello folks,

Not sure if any of you guys have tried this but I find it lovely and 5.7g carbs per 100g is a bit of a winner for a nice tomato sauce. Last time I did keto I really missed tomato sauce and could kick myself for not noticing this earlier. Agreed, you’d be much better to have mayo instead but when you get the taste for ketchup this’ll help without doing much damage  Anyways, couldn’t find anywhere on the Internet that told me the fibre content of this sauce so emailed Heinz and got a reply.

100g of sauce contains:

Energy: 191kj/45 kcal
Fat: 0.1g
-of which saturates: 0g
Carbohydrate: 5.7g
-of which sugars: 4.6g (naturally occuring)
Protein: 1.6g
Salt: 0.06g
Fibre: 2.4g

Since this isn’t a US label - does that mean 8.1 gm total carbs? 5.7 gm net?

I googled it and the US version of No Sugar Heinz came up with sucralose (Splenda) added and 1 gm carb per Tbl and no fiber.

Could be because the serving size was 1 Tbl (16g) and not 100g like your info above and due to rounding error and only having to report whole numbers in the US.

Thanks for posting this!

I didn’t know No Sugar Ketchup was even available. And would be nice to mix a little with my mayo for a dipping sauce.

I love the Heinz No Sugar Added Tomato Ketchup and buy it by the case, either from Amazon or Walmart. Walmart recently had it on a rollback special for $2.08 a bottle. Whenever I had a delivery from them, I asked for 12 bottles. They always gave me what they had left in stock.

Netrition has a number of no added sugar ketchups. Since I love the G Hughes sugar free Hickory BBQ sauce, I did buy a bottle of his sugar free ketchup, but haven’t tried it yet.

On a related note, both Vlasic and Mt. Olive have no sugar added sweet pickle relishes. Both are delicious. I have a shipment from Netrition on the way this week, with a few bottles of each.

For a no sugar added ketchup it sure is very sweet. Might be my new keto palate at work. Everything tastes extra sweet now. We bought it to make bbq sauce. Is that G Hughes Hickory BBQ sauce very sweet?

My taste has changed quite a bit, too. I made a cheesecake to take to Easter dinner, and my friend’s guests all commented that it wasn’t really sweet enough. Tasted just right to me, lol! I made the same recipe to take to a church picnic the other day, and it was a big hit, because I didn’t stint on the sweetener this time, but merciful heavens, was it sweet! :cheese: :cake:

@PaulL - New picture. Looks good!:grinning:

And no bacon?

I can finally eat 90% chocolate but it isn’t exactly sweet yet, but not bitter like it used to be.:yum:

Just thought I’d share these pics of the Catsup… I but it from Walmart (USA) (3 or 4 at a time, to have it stocked in the pantry)…

It’s like Goldilocks and the 3 bears at my house. When I make desserts, I think it’s too sweet, my husband thinks it’s not sweet enough and our son thinks it’s just right. I’ve been on keto the longest so hopefully they’ll catch up soon. Funny, I never thought I wouldn’t want or crave sweet things.

It is terribly sweet and tastes artificial to me. I usually cut it with a green hatch chile sauce.

I’ve been buying this since it hit the market a few years ago. It tastes like adult ketchup to me. Then again, I don’t use it that often. Since keto, I’ve become more of a mayo/mustard kinda gal.

(Jane) #14

I’ve only had the G Hughes original sugar free BBQ sauce and it was way too sweet for me. Maybe the Hickory isn’t as much but haven’t found it to try it.

:bacon: :cheese: :cake: :grinning: :grinning:

I usually have some “regular” ketchup around for other people. I’ve had both the regular and the “no sugar added”. Honestly, my taster doesn’t make a huge difference between them. I also don’t use a quart for every hamburger.

Mostly, I use some of my own homemade. I figured out the nutrition numbers on it a long time back and came to the conclusion that for the little bit that I eat, it’s not worth a fart in a windstorm keeping track. It really is inconsequential.

For tomato sauce, pizza sauce, ketchup, that kind of thing, I have found that roasting the tomatoes brings out a lot of the tomato flavor that I want and gets rid of that raw and somewhat bitter taste that tomatoes often start out with. It also brings about enough natural sweetness that there really is no reason at all to add sugar, it’s just not needed.

I would say yes. But I’m not a fan of the BBQ sauces that use a lot of vinegar.

#18

BTW, mixing the Heinz no added sugar Ketchup with horseradish makes a great shrimp cocktail sauce.

(Diane) #19

I also add in some lemon juice when I make cocktail sauce like this.

These are all great ideas for add-ins! We’ll have to start experimenting. I did make a shrimp Louie sauce with it a couple months back and it wasn’t too sweet. We added lots of mayo, hot sauce, lemon juice and relish. Horseradish sounds good too. We’ll add that next time. I’ve never been a fan of ketchup to begin with, I always ate everything with Sweet Baby Rays. Hmmm. I never thought of it being too sweet. Maybe if I tried it again I would think otherwise? We have a bottle of Guys BBQ Sauce and it’s not bad. Reminds me of Arby’s sauce. A little goes a long way with these things now!
