Hi, I joined this forum at the beginning of the year and did keto for about 3 months with absolutely no weight loss or measurement loss. Of course, I got fed up with having no results. I’m sure I did it to the letter and I took the advice to up the fat intake which is no hardship for me. I didn’t stop eating the keto way but I did start drinking alcohol again and put on about 4 kgs since so I know what’s put the weight on. I’m totally annoyed with myself for not sticking to it and putting more weight on too. People I work with have done the keto and lost lots of kgs and I know some of it is water weight but I didn’t even lose that. Is it my age? (67) because I’m female? Or because keto is not going to work for me? Or because I’m so stuffed up inside my body that I’ve got to wait for ages before it’s healed.
I’m having a big moan here and I hope someone has some advice for me as to how to get through this.
thanks for listening.
Got fed up - don't judge
What are you eating now? How many carbs (not net) per day? Are you doing any IF or EF? ((wait until fat adapted). How much do you need to lose?
Weight loss will be much slower for a 67 yo female, but there are some on this forum who have been successful with keto who might chime in.
Hi, sorry you’re feeling frustrated! That’s great that you want to get to the bottom of this.
Speaking of “stuffed up,” I know some people on here don’t bother with fiber, but I think I’d be in a pretty sorry state without my inulin (and magnesium). Also, one thing I just learned recently is that “older” people need more protein, so I’m trying to increase my protein intake.
As @Janie has indicated, we’ll be able to tell you more if we know more about what you did. I hope we’ll be able to help you figure this out.
I’m 65 and began keto almost 3 months ago, on July 14. I weighed 202 pounds then. I’ve lost 15 pounds with several stalls/plateaus; one stall lasted a whole month. A couple of times a month I flavor my coffee with a few drops of rum, but other than that I don’t do alcohol.
I will admit that other than overweight and torn menisci, I’m incredibly lucky health-wise, so I’m not boasting about my progress. I’m just very grateful.
For what it’s worth, you can read my Accountability thread here:

Hi Janie,
Thanks for replying. I have usually eggs and bacon at the weekend, boiled eggs during the week or scrambled eggs made with cream and butter and mushrooms. Lunch is salad Sometimes with cheese, meat or fish with olive oil. Salad consists of lettuce cue toms avocado spring onion. I have a cup of coffee with pure cream most days. Dinner is meat or fish with salad or veggies. Veggies are like bubble and squeak with butter or dripping or just veggies with butter. I don’t cut off the fat from the meat. When I get home from work sometimes I have a couple of thin slices of almond bread, as per recipe I found on here with cheese, vegemite or pate. When I wasn’t drinking alcohol I would have diet tonic water with ice and lemon. Also I have a lemon drink in the morning. When I count up the carbs it’s less than 20 per day. I think that might be net carbs though. It’s disappointing when you work hard at keto and nothing happens and keeping calm and ketoing on seems pointless. I don’t have a gallbladder since 2008 and I did wonder if that would have something to do with it. I get that the older we are the harder it is to lose, but at least something should be happening. The only prescribed medication I have is eyedrops and hrt which is a very low dose and a preventer inhaler.
At the moment I weigh 67kgs. Previously I was 63kgs. I am just under 5feet so 67kgs is a lot.
As in potatoes?
Are you tracking your food intake to monitor your macros?
No potatoes. I don’t eat anything starchy i get reflux. I did try to do the macros but then got advised not to worry about it in the beginning. Perhaps I should do the macros again?
For me, not doing the tracking/macros means people are just guessing as to what’s going on. It’s also educational.
If you don’t track, you don’t KNOW what you’re eating.
At the start, you should track your macros so you KNOW what’s going into your body. However, you are ok to just limit the carbs to 20g/day or less, and not worry so much about fat and protien. Not limiting the other macros, helps you to adjust to keto WOE. Once you’re happy with the carb intake, then you can limit/adjust fat and protein to suit. Because you will have been tracking fat and protein, you will have a great idea about how to adjust them.
Usually cauliflower broccoli Brussel sprouts and sometimes kalettes or spinach. I always make up a big batch in the steamer.
Sorry your feeling so frustrated…
I’d suggest eating fewer meals, and focus on whole foods. If your clogged up, make sure you are including a ketoaid in there.
Eggs and bacon for breakfast or lunch if you try to push back your first meal.
Protein and vegetable or salad for dinner with plenty of fat.
I’d also suggest tracking your macros

Hi, I am 69 and have kept a couple of things in mind. My age
reflects a slower metabolism, so some sort of “exercise” which
for me is walking in the a.m. with the dog (also have meniscus tears),
doing PT exercises for knees, and stationary bike in early afternoon
3-4 times a week. I have found that intermittent fasting (16/8 or 17/7)
have jump started losing. I began 7/14 and have lost 20 lbs. It took me
time to put the weight on, it will take me time to take it off. Keto has
helped this old lady develop a different mindset. The other thing I
have noticed is the need to ensure sufficient electrolytes - do Ketoaid
everyday and Magnesium Citrate supplement at night. Dr Ken Berry does a
video on YouTube about medications that affect BS and weight loss.
Highly recommended.
I’m “mysteriously” gaining weight now, so I’ve been researching this.
Based on what you’ve posted about your intake, etc., here are some possibilities:
Not enough fat (e.g., are you putting butter on your boiled eggs?)
Too much dairy (i.e., cheese and/or cream; butter should be okay)
Too much veg
Almond bread or diet tonic water could be messing things up.
Also, are you having too much lemon?
Carb counts and estimates can be tricky, especially since we’re aiming for under 20. The label or carb counter might say 0, but it could be 1. And it isn’t always a matter of numbers; specific foods can affect people differently.
I ran across a few things I didn’t understand, such as “inflammation” and “leptins.” I haven’t had beans for a while so I don’t know where the leptins come in. I seem to be coming down with a cold. Maybe that’s the inflammation?
I’m taking low dose HRT too. I don’t know much about the gallbladder thing, but I have seen a few threads where it’s discussed. Apparently some people with no gallbladder have problems with fat and so on, while others don’t.
Anyway, I’m going to tweak a few things and see what happens.
Good luck, Pat! You probably already know most of what I’ve written here, but I hope it helps somehow.
It might be beneficial to visit a functional medicine practitioner. They should be able to suss out what’s going on with your body. There could be hormonal issues. Or maybe you’re normal but need to tighten down your diet. Or maybe you’re among the 15% of the population that doesn’t do well on LC diets.
Perhaps consider implementing a fasting regime. This works well for a lot of folks. Check out some of the YouTube lectures by Dr Jason Fung.
Whatever you do, don’t give up. You will succeed, it’s just a matter of finding the right path and staying the course.
As I said I did start doing macros but then someone advised not to worry but keep the carbs low. So i worked out my macros yesterday and it’s
Protein. 48
Fat. 80
Carb. 20
Working out what I ate yesterday my macros are way out at
Protein. 70
Fat. 57
Carbs 12
I always thought I was eating way too much fat because I like it. How can I fit in the extra fat? Fat on meat comes with protein and it seems I am eating too much of that.
It seems I am not eating enough fat. I always put butter on my veg. I don’t think I am eating too much veg it’s about 12 at most and that’s counting salad at lunch.
The only dairy I have is cheese and cream I have almond milk in my tea which is .5 for 250 ml.
I did think the almond bread might be too much but I don’t have a lot of that maybe half a roll at the most. The diet tonic could be something to cut out, which I have of late.
I have juice of half a lemon 3 days a week. 3 days because I only work 3 days and that’s what I have when I get up early.
So, on this, I am going to up my fat intake and lower my protein intake.
I have just recently started walking on the mornings I work which is 3 days a week. While I’m at work I am mostly on my feet. Sometimes I do a lot of walking, not for long distance but walking around while I am working.
I have tried the fasting thing before. I think I can manage fasting until lunchtime. But having worked out my macros and I seem to have been overdoing the protein and underdoing the fat perhaps when I get that right things will improve. Thanks for the info I’ll check out Dr Ken Berry
Thank you I have taken all of your advice on board. I mainly at whole foods I don’t do processed. I must check out the ketoaid. Thanks all for your help and info I’ll let you know if things improve. Checking my macros and trying to KCKO🙂
