Getting bored with food

#1

Hi there,
I have been doing Keto since last January. I find I’m getting tired of having to work so hard at preparing food. I know that this is the whole idea of cooking at home, but I work and sometimes just get plain old lazy on grab and go ideas. I find lately I’m not eating enough which makes me have cravings and we all know that that isn’t good as it leads to bad decisions.

What are your “grab and go’s”?

I boil eggs weekly or make egg bake which is handy, but I think I’m looking more for the fat go too’s. Nuts are an easy choice, fat bombs as long as they don’t melt.

Any other grab and go’s?

I cook 14 pounds of ground beef on Sunday and eat that 2 to 3 meals during the week. Nothing less entertaining on the menu outside of eating rocks and sticks in a mud pie.

For ready made ‘snacks,’ I don’t know if they are in your market or area, but I just discovered "pork clouds’ and they are sublime! Also at our costco they have something called "Moon Cheese’ that I really like.

For meals I am a big crock pot user and will buy a pork shoulder and cook up a pot of pulled pork or carnitas and freeze in tupperware. One four pound cut makes about 12 servings. I get lots of recipes on line by just typing in Keto ____________ and then fill in the blank with recipe titles.

I make Green Cabbage Kimchi. Just a bite or two of the spicy mixture is very satisfying.

I have a microwave at work. Knowing there will be days where I have a too-tight schedule, I prepare 5 pounds of 27%/73% ground beef into patties and freeze them. On those days when I need them, I pull out 2 patties for lunch. I also crumble in pork rinds to absorb all this delicious tallow.

Other “grab-and-gos” I keep in stock:

  • Hard cheese
  • Pork Rinds (duh)
  • Hard salami

I find I am growing more adept and efficient in the kitchen. As I learn more about the crap in the manufactured food on the shelves, my appetite for frankenfood has diminished significantly. I am sufficiently motivated to know what’s in the food I’m eating and making my own food.

in the morning I boil 6 eggs every day. then some soft lunch with salad, and dinner with boiled chicken

Lately, I have been eating keto chow for 2 of 3 meals, but before I was cooking all my breakfasts, lunches and dinners over the weekend. Then, I would portion them and could pop them into the microwave. I got tired of the breakfast quiche I was making and that is when I started Keto Chow and I like it so much, that I am also having it for lunch (or dinner, if I go out to lunch).

I will be cutting back to one Keto Chow per day after I lose some more weight and then back to cooking something for lunch as well as dinner.

For snacks, if I feel so inclined, I like to have olives, pickles and cheese around. Oven roasted almonds are good too.

As far as recipes, I do cheap and easy keto meal preps based on the proteins that are on sale in a given week.

Otherwise, my pantry list is mostly geared around lazy microwave recipes.

But since I’m trying to lose weight, I actively work on restricting fats. That means cutting back on a lot of my favorite foods – bacon, sausage, cheese, butter.

My fave grab and go breakfast is simply a creamed coffee. You can add a bit of almond extract (a TINY bit, stuff is strong) for an “amaretto” taste.

For my “hard boiled eggs”, I use the this in the microwave. Just takes two minutes for four eggs. Only drawback is that they’re not in a good shape for deviled eggs. And NO PEELING!

Seeds as well. I do sunflower and pepitas (pumpkin).

But carbs and calories can add up fast.

My easiest grab and go is using frozen fajita steak or chicken on a big salad. And it’s not a grab and go but a big omelette with cheese and fajita meat only takes about 5 minutes.

My local grocery store has a hot deli where i can grab roasted chicken by the piece or whole chicken and sometimes they have hot wings.

I’m eating tinned fish more nowadays.
Very convenient.
Open tin, eat. Or add mayo and eat. Delicious.
Also v portable, doesn’t go off, and most of them don’t need tin openers.

The only problem is that adding mayo to tuna or salmon, which isn’t carnivore. But I do buy avocado mayo, or make my own, which is somewhat better than bog standard mayo.

Other grab and gos are cheese, cold meats and leftovers from previous meals.

I currently have half a cold roast duck sitting in the fridge, waiting for me to grab it.

I am picky about my boiled eggs. I hate when they have grey in them from overcooking. Exactly 12 minutes in boiling water and they are perfect every time.

I love scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. I cook 3 eggs with butter and a little cream. With 100g of smoke salmon its quick easy and luxurious.
I make my own mayo and often add heinz 0 sugar to make a rose marie sauce with prawns and avocado.
I make batches of soups ( eg cream of celery, roasted red pepper and tomato with mascarpone) and flaxseed foccacia bread. All 8n the freezer in portion sizes.
Hope this helps!

For hard boiled eggs, 14 minutes steamed works even better. The shells never stick to the egg and the yolks don’t turn grey. Just put them in ice water for several minutes after they are steamed.

I will cook up chicken thighs in the oven and then I freeze them individually. Then I can just take one out of the freezer and warm it in the microwave.

Pepperoni is also a tasty keto snack.

My kids like cold cut rolls: just roll up a slice of turkey, cheese, and salami.

Pork rinds dipped in guacamole.

I used to love cooking, but I felt that cooking, cleanup, grocery shopping, etc., were taking up too much of my time, so I’ve simplified.

I got rid of most of my cooking utensils and don’t use a stove any more–just a microwave. My usual meals include the following:

  • Ground beef, crumbled in the bowl, and microwaved at med-low power. Wow, tastes like beef! But you can fancy it up with mayonnaise or spices if you want. I don’t bother with sauces most days–too much trouble and mess.

  • Canned salmon with mayo. Forget about all the chopped onions, celery, etc.

  • Microwaved scrambled eggs. You can add other things if you like, such as salmon, cheese, salsa. Adding a bit of mayo to the mix (before cooking) really helps; I consider it the secret ingredient for egg dishes.

  • Rotisserie chicken from the supermarket. If you’re lucky, your store will have cooked chicken legs.

  • 2.5 ounces of real (not processed) cheese has the same protein as 4 ounces of meat. Fancy cheeses (e.g., Gouda, Swiss, or extra old) if you like. But be aware that most mozzarella is low-fat.

  • Italian sausage or other tasty sausage. Cook up a bunch and eat the leftovers cold. Be sure to check the nutrition info; some sausages are 0 carbs, some have 6 or 7.

If you still use a frying pan, oven, or slow cooker, just simplify the way you cook. Throw a steak or chop in the pan, turn it over, done. Or, oven cook or slow cook a roast until done. No need for fancy sauces or other treatments. A lady at the market has the best pulled pork; she says she stopped using spices and all the rest, and now cooks it with onion only.

Good luck!

PS. Since you’re already “bored,” you might as well make it easy on yourself. Instead of cooked sauces, use a few favorite condiments–mustard, mayonnaise, salsa, whatever. I’m lucky, I like the taste of food and don’t need a lot of extra flavors. For me, shirataki noodles, ground beef, and canned tomato sauce (no filler or added junk) is a fancy meal.

My on-the-go or emergency food includes: vienna sausages, sardines, baggie of bacon (which I prep on the weekend and keep cooked in the fridge and eat cold), hard boiled eggs, string cheese, can of tuna (which I can eat dry if I’m desperate) and bullion powder (that I keep in my purse) because it fills me up for a little while.

I like those little almond nut butter packets.
