Gaining weight —newbie

(Devon) #1

I’m new here. I started keto 3.5 weeks ago. I have autoimmune disease and 10 lbs to lose so rather than take all the medicines, I decided to try keto to lose the weight, clear the brain fog and give me some energy.

I eat eggs, tuna salad, meats here and there (I’m not a huge fan), salads with olives, nuts and full fat no carb dressing. I haven’t touched sugar, bread, pasta, rice, nightshades or anything else that is a real carb. And yet I’m gaining weight… very slight but I’m not losing at all!

I do intermittent fasting from 8pm- 11 am. I do drink coffee in that time but with unsweetened walnut milk and stevia (under 50 calories).

Any ideas? I’m frustrated.
Ps I’m female, 40, 140 lbs

You might find that losing 10 lbs is going to take a lot longer than someone who has 100 lbs to lose. Be sure you’re not starving yourself, get enough calories and be patient. You’ve only been at it for 3.5 weeks and you didn’t mention how many carbs you’re eating a day but it might be tough to keep it really low if you’re not a fan of meat. It absolutely can be done, but veggie and nut carbs can add up quickly.

I’m glad to hear you have more energy and a clearer brain. Weight loss is just ONE of the benefits of going keto.

What she said! :+1:

Remember also that your hormonal cycle is relevant here. The people who tend to lose the most weight the fastest tend to be men. It’s just more complicated for women. Not that you need me to tell you that, lol! Patience, grasshopper! :bacon:

I’ll echo that being so close to a happy weight for your body will make it harder to drop, but that’s any way of eating, just how our bodies work. I’d honestly dump the fasting until you’re fat adapted. If you starve your body of what it wants as a power source, prior to it getting good at burning fat instead but then also time restrict eating your body may think it’s not getting fed and hold on to weight. This is why you sometimes see people get the advice to eat MORE to loose, whether that’s correct for you or not depends on a lot of variables. Are you watching an upper calorie limit, or just watching the carbs? How active are you? Working out?

I was eating a lot of meat in the beginning but read that too much protein is bad. So now I think maybe I’m eating too much vegetables. I don’t count the veggie carbs :grimacing: but my regular carbs are well below 20… from cheese, heavy cream, and nuts. Maybe that’s my problem. I am not very active although I used to be and am making changes in that direction…

I reply with this all the time and surprised I am not labeled the Sleep Preacher. Full night’s sleep is critical to help facilitate healing, which then leads to weight loss. It is a side effect of getting healthier - not the goal. Also measure progress with other ways, not just the scale, as scales are inconsistent… and so are we with timing lol.

Hang in there. It may be slow going, but it is helping in ways we can’t always see externally. I was slow to start losing myself and nearly 10 months later, 80 pounds gone.

Me, like many, are meat eating maniacs! Don’t worry about over eating protein, unless you’re trying to eat a cow per day you’re not going to over do it. The evil GNG monster isn’t going to turn it into a dozen cupcakes.
