Awesome new article from Dr Fung

TL:DR Take aways

if you are trying to lose weight, and have some problem with obesity/ insulin/ leptin resistance, then adding extra fat to your meals is NOT a good idea

If you are slender, then eating fat will not make you fat. If you are obese/ overweight then yes, eating more fat will make you fat.

Uhhh…he seems to be omitting a lot of science in order to support his love affair with fasting.

Fung:

"Now, the situation for the obese, leptin resistant person. As you eat lots and lots of fat, insulin does not go up. However, that ‘fat bomb’ does indeed go directly into your fat stores. You respond by increasing leptin levels in your blood. But here’s the difference. You body don’t care. It’s resistant to the effects of leptin. So, your metabolism does not go up. Your appetite does not go down. None of the beneficial weight loss effects of eating that ‘fat bomb’ happens. And yes, you will need to eventually burn off that extra fat you’ve taken in."

One of many, many other guys:

"We all know that the commonest lab finding in people following a low-carb diet is a dramatic reduction in triglyceride levels. This reduction in triglycerides allows the leptin that is already circulating in relatively large amounts to get through to the brain where it can reduce hunger. I believe that this reduction in triglycerides (which happens fairly quickly) is the primary reason that people substantially decrease their hunger on low-carb diets. And remember from the graphic above that leptin – once it gets to the brain – actually increases thermogenesis as well, which means that the metabolic rate increases."

My hunger went way down on LCHF. I crave mostly fat but in smaller quantities–exactly how LCHF is supposed to work. So, you can pry my fat bombs from my cold, dead hands, little Fungster.

As always Fung wisely leaves a lot of ground for variation depending on the results of one’s personal experimentation in dieting and fasting. I hit a delicious fat bomb now and again for satiety sake but not just to eat something. Like tonight for dinner, I had a small fatty pork chop, with some Bubbies’ sauerkraut and a nice pile of green beans. I didn’t have much for lunch so I wasn’t feeling I had eaten enough. Tonight for a fat bomb I had two tablespoons of almond butter & one tablespoon of coconut oil. It was about 350 calories of fat but it did the trick and yet I have considerable weight to lose. However I may only have one or two of those fat bombs per week. Common sense tells me that I could stall my weight loss if I see how much I can eat. For example BPC is often part of a meal for a lot of folks. I don’t think Asprey ever had that in mind. Rather BPC is a meal replacement though it is tasty and I certainly wouldn’t mind having it with every meal. :grinning:
