Fasting - from "Not interested" to "Success"

Hi all -
I have to admit that fasting just never interested me - at all. (I guess I like to eat - and I love food!) I also believed that it doesn’t fit into my lifestyle, as I have a husband who doesn’t follow LCHF (although he should - he’s on statins), believes everything his doctor tells him, and believes that fat is bad. So, he would expect me to eat dinner with him, and would scoff at fasting, I’m sure. (picture his eye-rolls) I DO cook meat & vegetables every day, and occasionally give him a potato. He always says “I’ll just eat what you eat” but I can tell he’s not thrilled.

I have been LCHF for 2 years now - Am very low carb, in Ketosis frequently, but probably not 100% of the time. My WHY - is weight loss & pre-diabetes. I lost 40 lbs in the first 6 months, and then stalled with 50-60 more lbs. to lose! But I saw great improvement in my bloodwork (A1C went from 6.2 with Metformin to 5.5 without & no longer on BP meds!) So despite the stall - I knew I was benefiting from this WOE.

I think of fasting, since my stall is now officially over a year - but still am not really interested in it & I believed it wouldn’t work with my (our) lifestyle.

NOW - this last week, we had dinner one night around 6, and the next two nights it happened that either my hubby or I wouldn’t be home for dinner. SO - I thought it might be a good chance to fast - would have NO explaining to do.

SUCCESS! It turned out to be a 72 hr fast! And the only hard part was the head hunger - thinking that I should be eating something. This morning I woke up (60 hrs in) and forgot I was fasting! I expected to be HUNGRY / STARVING - but I wasn’t! I am happy to report that it wasn’t hard at all - only the mindset of thinking I want to eat something. The scale was down 3 lbs this morning - but I expect it to probably raise a little.

I am so happy about this - and am hoping to have broken this stall! I am now planning on feasting for the next week. I’m even scheming about when he’ll be gone (fishing trip, etc) and I can do it again!

Thank you all for sharing your experiences & advice - so invaluable!!

Well done!! So pleased you’ve found success with your first fast. Am starting to think I should give it a go one day soon.

Is there any chance your husband is a bigamist? Because mine is exactly the same. In fact, the other day when I said we were having (fathead) pizza, he turned up his nose and said the last few times he has struggled to finish it because it makes him feel sick :frowning:

Sounds like he’ll be doing some fasting as well then!

yeah the biggest obstacle is overcoming eating just because you think you should… I’m almost finished with my first 72 hour fast, i have less than an hour to go, though I may hold off till dinner, i still have 3 hours of work left and about an hour drive…

LOL! Unfortunately there must be TWO of them! He really should be eating the same -I think he needs an appointment with Doc Muscles! Wish we lived in Arizona!!

I can tell by Your comments (throughout this forum) that we think alike!!!

I didnt get to be 421lbs with out learning to lean on food for everything…

And often because you’re SO thinks you should. I’ve had the same experience as @Lueloff has with her husband. My wife is convinced I’m harming myself despite my best efforts to show her the science and share what I’ve learned.

Yea-he just has NO interest in nutrition. Sometimes I tell hubby to ask doc what studies show decreased cardiac risk w/statins but he thinks his doctor is the expert & shouldn’t be questioned. :thinking:

Good for you for giving it a go. It always amazes me that we (mostly, women, some men) are so groomed to please that even the slightest intonation, body language or facial expression can make us feel like our needs are secondary. IMO Yyou should feed yourself and let hubby eat what’s put in front of him or fend for himself. Anf if you want to fast and you’re “the cook” make up a few things ahead of time or he can order take out and you do your thing. YOUR health and well being should be your #1 concern. Best wishes and KCKO.

@Lueloff,
Thank you for sharing your experience with your fast! It is true that sometimes a significant other may make the idea of fasting a bit more difficult. I have noticed that I always want something in my mouth, either is be gum or a mint. I have started to drink hot green tea when I need to “full belly” feeling. Do you have any suggestions on how to stop the want of chewing gum while on fast? Any ideas on how to be strong although my job involves food?

Thanks =),
Joycie.
