Fasting buddy?

#21

Thanks, Autumn!
Yeah, a lot of times it takes me 2 or 3 starts to get an extended fast going.

I think the problem this time was that I kicked myself out of ketosis the day before I started, so I ended up with a 24 hour fast. But, the good news is that yesterday was a success! Day 1 finished (now 39 hours in) and I should be good to go!
Checked blood ketones this morning and was 1.1

Mmmmm…ribeye! Haven’t tried blue cheese, but have been enjoying Kerrygold cheese lately.

Have a great day!

Well so far so good today. Went hiking a bit too. About 6 hours more to hit 24 hour mark.
Great job Debby!

Well broke fast again. I don’t know why it’s been so hard. Maybe it’s because I’m at healthy BMI. I just am wanting to shed 15 pounds. Also I have pain behind left knee that I was hoping would clear up with an extended fast. Will see. If anything going to IF for now.

I’m in the same boat (healthy BMI and an extra 10 or 15). Last night I listened to a couple 2KD podcasts (woke up several times) and one of them has me kind of concerned.

Richard was saying that if you are not obese and fasting, one of the symptoms is that you get cold. I always get cold during a fast, but I thought everyone did, obese or not.

He said (I’m paraphrasing, especially since I was half awake when I listened  ) that in this case fasting can lead to starvation response and slowed metabolism. I did already think that being cold meant a slower metabolism, but thought that only made sense for the body to try to conserve energy.

I will re-listen and I apologize if I misunderstood him.

Anyway, I am wondering if I should only be doing IF. My main objective is to lower my HBA1C (have lowered it so far from 6.0 to 5.6)

Edited to add that this is Day 3 of my water fast.

Great job on pushing through to day 3! I think it gets hard for us because of that reason. Yes I get cold normally on 2nd day. I honestly think it just happens. But I’m not 100%.

Thank you! Well, I’m still fasting. Was having trouble deciding if I should break the fast or not. I bought 20 bricks of Finlandia unsalted butter today (7 oz bricks are 2/$4 at Safeway). And a couple bone in New York strip steaks in the marked down section.

It was really tough watching my husband eat the fatty steak. With butter melted on it.

Then I drank a glass of water.

When I break the fast, I’ll do IF. Might do ZC for a while now that I’m out of produce except for one bag of Trader Joe’s frozen asparagus.

(Autumn Sangra) #27

I was thinking of doing ZC the next time I break from EF.
Planning on fasting Monday after super bowl.

#28

I’m quite surprised how well ZC is turning out for me after a fast. I’m over 20 days after a 7-day fast, and all I gained was 1.4 lbs. hmmmm…interesting…

(Autumn Sangra) #29

I know I have been fooling your posts after your extended fast. I figure do one extended fast then ZC after. Because everything tastes great after a 7+day fast. Honestly are you getting bored with meat only?

#30

It feels restricting because I designed a test plan where I do 4-days dedicated to one protein group at a time, and it will take me 32 days to complete the test. So, if I feel like eating pork or fish, I cannot unless it’s on my test plan. The reason for my test is to see if I have a sensitivity to a protein…since after the fast, my intestines are pretty clean, and it is a good opportunity to do this. However, if I had free choice on whatever protein food I wanted, I really don’t think it would be that hard…there are so many choices that I like.

(Autumn Sangra) #31

Well I was just talking to my husband about your challenge. He’s in too! So grateful for my supportive husband!

#32

I broke my fast last night. Three hours before the end of the 4th day. ZC.

ZC again for tonight. Fatty chuck roast slice is thawing (sliced it and froze it months ago). Will be accompanied by beef tallow, ghee, and not sure what else yet.

I listened to the most recent Fasting Talk podcast last night. Fung did talk about extended fasting not being suggested unless you are obese. Funny how I missed that message until recently…I thought he was suggesting it for anyone trying to improve insulin resistance. I don’t think I have insulin resistance, but my overeating of protein has my HBA1C at 5.6 (as of last check last Fall).

My plan is to do IF and ZC (or keto) and see if I can lower my HBA1C by my next test in May. My father is pre-diabetic and on Metformin and I am trying not to follow in his footsteps. He won’t follow in mine though…still eats sandwiches, etc.

Yeah, Dr Fung has many times repeated that hard core water fasting is not necessary for lean people. And when he is asked advice on fasting (as in “what can I eat/drink during a fast”) his response is always…“it depends what type of fast”. If you don’t indicate that you have weight to lose (high BMI), then he doesn’t advise water only fasting…that’s what I have observed. That’s why he brings up the bone broth and fatty drinks strategy, for those who need it (ie lean people fasting for other reasons).

Currently on day 4 water fast. It’s getting tough today. Need encouragement to push through!

#35

Wow, you are on Day 4?! That’s super!

Hang in there…You can do it!

I am on Day 1. Ate so much yesterday that I am not hungry today (low/no carb. cooked a chicken in the instant pot)

(Autumn Sangra) #36

Yeah I barely made it through day 4! Today is day 5. I’m finally noticing I’m losing fat now! So that’s encouraging. Just gonna see how long I can go then going ZC. So I will hopefully maintain most of weight loss. Thanks for encouraging me! It helps!

#37

Hi Autumn!

You’re doing great! Sounds like you made it through the toughest days!!

mmmm ZC

(Autumn Sangra) #38

Well I broke fast with ZC yesterday I included cheese. Today weight up 4lbs from yesterday morning. Going without cheese now. I had some Kerrygold butter and 4 eggs around 11:30 this morning then BPC. I feel satiated. About to go hiking with hubby. I’ll prob do eggs butter tonight. See if that works better than adding cheese.
I plan on fasting again Monday.
Thanks Debby!

Congrats!
Funny, I went hiking today and when I got home I had eggs, butter and cheese.
