Fasting blood glucose on an EF

#1

I apologize if this is somewhere else in the forum but I searched and couldn’t find it.

If I remember correctly, I believe I heard it mentioned in the 2 Keto Dudes podcast that an extended fast will skew the results of a fasting blood glucose test. Am I remembering it wrong? I’m in the middle of a weeklong fast and my doctor wants me to a fasting blood glucose and I would rather end the fast than give false numbers.

If someone knows the info (or can tell me which episode it might be) I would greatly appreciate it!

I think you might be getting mixed up with cholesterol tests where if you have extended fasted before the blood is taken then it can skew the results. I usually get lower blood sugars when fasting so don’t think it should be a problem (unless you want them to be higher for some reason).

Ahh, so if I want more accurate results I need to end the EF early, then do the standard overnight fast before giving the blood sample, correct?

Yes, kind of… while you’re losing weight cholesterol results will be a bit wonky (and they’ll be very wonky- lipids abnormally high - during an EF).
Generally glucose will drop quite a lot during a fast. Mine was in the 50s last time I checked it on the 5th day of a fast, but many folks still get dawn effect in the morning (fast or no fast).

Thank you so much, Mark and Madeline!

I also checked my glucose regularly during a 5 day fast. I was surprised that it was still pretty steady around 100 until day 5 when it finally dipped to about 79 in the morning.
I also chalked it up to dawn affect and didn’t worry about it
