The physiology has been sort of distorted by other interests - particularly food companies, sugary beverage companies - who want the calorie theory to be correct. We’re looking into advocacy to get the conflict-of-interest out of medicine… We all pretend we live in a world of “evidence-based” medicine. The problem is, if all the evidence is corrupt, then evidence-based medicine is also going to be corrupt. If all your evidence is produced by pharmaceuticals, is produced by people getting paid by the sugar industry for example - you’re gonna think that sugar’s fine!

I don’t blame the sugar company or the big food company or the pharma company - their responsibility to their shareholders is to sell. The problem is that we allow Coca Cola to pay the Univ. of Toronto and then they produce crappy research! Nobody’s allowed to give police officers or judges anything - but we say oh yeah, if you’re a big company you can give doctors anything you want… Why do we allow this to happen???.. We have to get political, we shouldn’t be allowing any of this!

Dr. Fung explains how he differs from some others on the “Carb/Protein Hypothesis”. He does great at bringing out the science and the cross-cultural perspectives so necessary for hollstic and culturally sensitive understanding of it. He points out that 50-60% of recomposition is WHEN WE EAT, and that not eating all time (many times a day) makes people cope with carbs better - referring to even cultures that eat refined rice, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes etc. (which explains why I never got obese in my pre-keto life due to simply less frequent eating, and a natural OMAD after an afternoon buffet/thali platter, etc).

He emphasizes that frequency of eating is more relevant than macros, and talks about various fascinating & compelling cross-cultural angles that show that low levels of insulin can exist in diverse cuisine traditions when people don’t eat all day!!! Interestingly, he also points out that natural/unprocessed carbs (like beans, whole boiled potatoes) activate the body’s satiety signals differently than industrial sugar, related to natural satiety mechanisms such as stomach fullness and protein satiety signals. Processed foods remove all that - high sugar drinks and simple carbs. He really deep dives on the powers of insulin lowering intermittment fasting vs. caloric restriction, and the hugely different hormonal profiles of both related to insulin, ghrelin, leptin, etc… and how the body can “eat lunch out of your own body fat”. :slight_smile:

And another interesting section on cravings, ghrelin, and how female physiology’s ghrelin differences still does very well with fat burning fasting.

Dr. Fung also explores body set weight, how to avoid the vicious cycles of metabolic lowering, and the important factor of least frequent eating being related to quickest assistance for hormonal healing due to the body not being told to store fat throughout the day. He also affirms the fact that hormonal balancing is a long process, not a quick fix/crash “diet” sorta thing etc.

He also says a lot of interesting things about gastric bypass surgery and the conditions it creates for insulin lowering - same as intermittent fasting actually - and how this verifies the benefits of a insulin-lowering dietary way of life.

Wow, he’s really starting to go off on corruption in the medical industry. Hope he doesn’t get crucified, brave man.

A little long, but worth listening. Dr. Fung seems like a pretty reasonable and sensible guy.

Yeah - the last 15 minutes, he’s speaking SO MUCH truth. As a real human can, and should! And though the Hippocratic oath is “First, Do No Harm” few physicians are doing so. Dr. Fung speaking on the social-political realities is ethical medicine!!!
