Erythritol taste

(Miss E) #1

Does the taste grow on you? I’ve never liked the taste but my taste buds pick it up even more now that I’m low carb. I can taste it for hours after I’ve consumed it ans it just taste like straight chemicals to me. Similar to liquorice tea flavour, not sure why but any tea with liquorice or aniseed flavours get picked up as hyper sweet by my taste buts to the point of tasting bitter sweet.

I can avoid it for now but there are some things I would like to be able to eat or make that call for it.

I tend to use half what the recipes call for and add a few drops of liquid stevia as the tastes complement each other and seem to cancel out each other’s after tastes

I find my mint and liquorice tea tastes sweet as well. I do like it though.

I can’t taste it at all. I use the NOW brand. What brand are you using? Stevia actually bothers me more than Erithritol. I use erythritol to take the bitterness from the stevia.

I’m using this one and there is a definite after taste. I can still taste it hours after eating things made with it. I largely got it to just try things out so that I could get a point of reference and options for anyone asking me about baked goods options on Keto. I’m inclined to try a different sweetener next time.

Interesting. Just a personal thing I guess. Diet sodas are weird to me and zevia soda is basically intolerable because of the stevia alone. But others love it. So I definitely understand where your coming from. I notice a sweetness that lingers after my coffee with erythritol/stevia, but never anything else. Hopefully you can find something that works for you.

it’s the erythritol that’s in already made foods, I’ve only used it once in my home made food. Brand is Natvia

All I can say is if you are using a sweetener, and I do, monk fruit is really good. Bought it online to find monk fruit without added Stevia, or erithrytol, or maltodextrin ,or…

I never liked the taste of stivia till i cut pout almost all carbs, now it tastes good.

#10

it tastes gross and gives me the shits. silly chemical that should be avoided IMO.

(Miss E) #11

been researching monk fruit options and coconut syrup, will advise :stuck_out_tongue:

(Duncan Kerridge) #12

Isn’t coconut syrup basically just sugar?

(Casey) #13

I use Swerve (found here). I have made peanut butter cookies and brownies with it. No aftertaste issues. I do not like the aftertaste of Stevia.

#14

Same here, I cannot taste erythritol at all (don’t find it actually sweetens anything) however I cannot stand the strong chemical aftertaste of stevia hence I do not use sweeteners at all now. On the odd occassion that I make no oat porridge or chia seed pudding, I just grate in some dark choc and maybe add a few berries to taste. Otherwise, sweetener free here.

#15

But then I love licorice/aniseed flavours

(Miss E) #16

I meant to say coconut nectar

#17

Personally, erythritol is my go-to sweetener, but if you don’t care for it, have you looked into the new kid on the block: allulose?

(Miss E) #18

nooo, I have not heard of him yet :stuck_out_tongue:

#19

I haven’t tried it myself, but it looks very promising. I’ve heard people say that it tastes just like real sugar and it even caramelizes when cooking like real sugar.

Same thing really : https://www.superfoodly.com/coconut-nectar/

I’d steer clear of anything with syrup, nectar or sugar in the name…
