Electrolytes wacky?

(Mandy) #1

Hey all,

End of week 2 here. While I think I dodged most of the first week symptoms, they may be hitting me now. Thinking my electrolytes may be off. I’m feeling super anxious. While I do have a history of anxiety, it’s been in check for years. Over the past few days I’ve felt like I want to crawl out of my skin. I’m also having some possibly faint feelings? I’ve added some extra sodium with my bpc as I feel this mostly mid morning. My first week I was eating eggs, bacon/sausage for breakfast so wondering if the morning lack of salt is the cause. I seem to remember reading different things on supplementing with potassium and magnesium as well. I drink about my body weight in ounces of water but still have a little dry mouth. Thoughts?

If in doubt add more salt. I probably drink about 4 glasses with a teaspoon of salt during the course of a day and always salt my food. Its the first thing I do when I wake up.

Some drink ketoaid, search for it on here.

I supplement with magnesium every morning and night

I get potassium from green veg and avo but also sometimes use lite / lo-salt that is a blend of potassium & sodium.

Like I say, add more salt, if the problems go away the you have correctly diagnosed the issues. More salt is my first go to when I have complications on the keto diet and 90% of the time it sorts it.

If you are following a correctly formulated keto diet I don’t believe there is such a thing as too much salt.

Last word on salt & magnesium, both can cause digestive issues if consumed in large qty in a short period of time. Magnesium can be used as a laxative and also there is a thing called a salt flush so if you start having digestive issues dial it back and increase gradually.

Thanks @allan… You always have great advice. I made some spinach in butter after my post. I salted it pretty heavily and ate. While the symptoms I described did subside, Im pretty sure I caused myself some of the ill side effects you mentioned in your last paragraph. Doh!! I’m definitely going to up my salt as well as spacing out my spinach intake. Thanks again.

I’ll tel you from my experience that my anxiety increased DRAMATICALLY when I started Keto. It really is a big shock to the system. But now things have leveled out and I’d say I’m ahead of where I used to be. I’ll call that a win.

Haven’t watched it yet, but saw Dr. Berg (who advocates Keto WOL) posted this on his twitter yesterday.

@rhltechie, Allan has it right. Salt regulates a host of other things, among them the movement of other electrolytes into & out of the cells. You can read a lot more about salt here in the forums, and one episode of the 2kd podcast is with the author of “The Salt Fix,” which debunks the decades-old fear of dietary salt (excellent book).

This salt talk is so helpful. I’m on day 7 of keto and am not sleeping well. Feel pretty fatigued. I’ve been adding one electrolyte drink (nuun brand) in the morning and that helps a bit. I think I’ll up my salt too. Myfitness pal says I’m eating 2.5 gams a day but that doesn’t include the salt I put on my avocados.

Great video. I’ve been feeling super panicky for a few days. It’s been a bit concerning. I’m going to up my salt but also make sure I’m getting enough potassium in my food. Thanks for all the great input.

The recommendation is 4-5 grams. It’s hard to tell what you’re getting unless you track, but I find it hard to overdo.

Today is definitely a better day. I started with some salt water before my BPC and for lunch had salmon. It occurred to me when I was eating, I didn’t have any salmon this last week, I had it 3 times the week before. Wondering if missing out on the omegas and the potassium really set me the wrong way. Thanks for reading.
