I was wondering if eating something around 5-10 grapes is OK on keto? Especially on empty stomach before your meal… What do you think?
Eating very few grapes - OK or not?
I eat any fruit I want on keto. Only the ones I can’t eat in moderation are out, fortunately I am not into them.
So I obviously eat my own grapes
In very tiny amounts and almost always immediately followed by some fatty protein as I had negative experiences without it. 1-2 little balls caused a tiny sugar poisoning, it was surreal but definitely not nice. If I add fatty protein right afterwards, I don’t get it. I never heard this from anyone but that works for me so I do that.
Sugar on an empty stomach is not something my body likes.
They are only 17g carbs per 100g of Grapes. Not too bad. Personally I wouldn’t eat them. I’d save my 20g a day for other things.
Not sure about other reasons for avoiding them… Anyone?
The answer is always, “you CAN eat whatever you want.”
Just count your carbs. Carry on.
Try it and see if it works for you. I sometimes find that I cannot limit my sugar consumption once I start. I try to avoid fructose even more vigorously because it triggers binge eating for me. You may be lucky. Eating grapes may not affect you or your later food choices. Let us know how you get on.
Hmmm, Polly has a point, carbs easily may want more carbs… Sweets bring desire for more sweets…
But it’s always the case for keto and for any other woe, really: If something is dangerous for you (slippery slope), avoid it. If you can just eat your grapes as a tiny extra without a problem and it’s worth for you, eat it if you want.
And if not eating grapes has no chance, we can’t do anything about it. It’s me and my fruits: I had to learn to eat them in moderation and occasionally as not eating them ever won’t happen.
I nibble on grapes, plums and so on when they are ripe in my yard. My rule is to not bring any into the house, I have to go out there and nibble directly from the vine/tree. That keeps the amount in check. When I made the mistake of buying some grapes, I ate too many and gained promptly, 3 pounds. So, now I only eat the fruit when in season in my garden. Berries are exempted from that rule.
That said, I don’t think a little fruit here or there hurts much overall, unless it triggers your bad habits or you can’t control how much you eat.
I am so thankful banana is a true berry Not like I would care, of course and I don’t eat it nearly as often as a newbie ketoer… Eating it alone is tricky (too sweet) but it’s great flavoring in some dessert.
I wonder how I will use my grapes as they went over the “not enjoyable, too sweet” cathegory, along with my Williams pears.
Eating outside wouldn’t help me with the amount control. Actually, bringing the fruit inside helps, I must be weird… It’s so more enjoyable eating my fruit outside. There are exceptions, some fruits are lovely in any way. I often prefer them being frozen but that reduces the amount too as it makes them sweetener for me. Especially banana.
Carnivore Ken Berry eats fruit off the tree once a year at harvest time … apparently
Thanks for sharing your opinion - no, for me eating a few grapes maybe once/twice a month during summer never triggered anything bad for me, if anything it only made me feel full throughout the day.
Do you have grapes in summer? Oh, in supermarkets, yes, we have that too. My grapes are autumn ones as most grapes, maybe one early is in August…? I am bad with time related things…
I never buy fruit I have myself except maybe sour cherries as it’s the Perfect Fruit, good for anything and my several trees had about 15 pieces this year… That’s maybe not even enough for me but my fruit-lover SO definitely isn’t happy with that.
(Uh oh, I am still talking about fruit, someone should stop me… Fruits are amazing and the best idea for me to spend my carbs on if I want to spend them at all - among plants, I mean. Most of my carbs go to animal products, about 2-40g a day.)
Unless you have issues with alcohol (in which case ignore this suggestion), it would seem far more enjoyable - and with lower carbs - to eat grapes after the fermentation process has been properly completed.
Patience.
I would stick to the other berries (commonly available in UK), the triumvirate that is raspberries, balckberries and strawberries, in limited quantities (a handful with cream).
High fibre, relatively low carb, they won’t spike your BG.
Blackberries are good too, but a bit more expensive in the shops…but we pick them wild from the brambles before the birds anhilate them.
Yeah I prefer raspberries over grapes myself (tastier, way more enjoyable as it’s not too sweet, I prefer red fruits etc.) BUT they aren’t grapes. And I don’t have raspberries anyway when I have grapes…
It’s just me though, others may love grapes the most.
Blackberries aren’t among my favs but we have a ton of them. They are the only fruit I can depend on… Maybe greengage and medlar too. The other fruits may have problems and in 2023 almost all had.
But right now we only have mini strawberries, raspberries (red and black), currants and apricots. About 60g a day? Just a guess. This is plenty if you ask me (of course I only eat a fragment of it)
It’s always best to eat your protein first. It’s digestion will slow the sugar and insulin spike from fruit. Grapes are pretty much little sacks of sugar, so you’ll just have to count your carbs from them. I avoid them when I do keto, and use berries instead. Better source of polyphenols and less carby while still providing good soluble fiber. I eat my berries with a full fat yogurt, which is a good protein and fat source for absorbing my vitamins I supplement.
As others have said you can eat anything, as long as you count the carbs. I found I could eat apples but not grapes when I was losing. Grapes made me just want more of them making it very hard to stay the course. Apples I can easily stop eating them without wanting more. And I do like them as much as grapes. They just treated me better :).
I find if it easier to eat any fruit in season, rather then when they are out of season. Maybe because traveling fruits continue ripening longer to create carbs. I say this because I eat my own apples from our backyard. We have good apples and raspberries growing. This subdivision used to be an apple and cherries orchard.
