Easier Than I Thought - My First Extended Fast

(Laurie) #1

Today is Sunday and my last meal was lunch Wednesday so in day four and will probably end it tomorrow. I have been waiting for the dread 2nd or 3rd day struggle but I haven’t felt much different. I have had a BPC each morning and bone broth Thursday but didn’t feel the need for broth the last two days. I have a slight headache now, very minor, so I just downed a glass of ketoade and already feel it going away. I have been doing mostly 18:6 fasts but felt like going longer so just didn’t eat. I even cooked bacon last night for a friend and wasn’t tempted in the least. Went to the bakery to buy a birthday cake for my mom and, again, no temptation. Woo-HOO.

Pretty amazing not to be tempted by bacon. For years I was a fish eating vegetarian and then when I was pregnant I cooked bacon for my husband and just couldn’t take it. I ate the bacon. So then for a while I was a fish-eating, bacon-eating vegetarian (we joked). The next pregnancy I had a craving for steak and that was the end of even any joking about being a vegetarian.

Well done. What’s your ketoade recipe?

@bee - Yeah, I was surprised too. A friend who has been very sick and not interested in food finally said he would eat something. I was planning to offer cottage cheese and fruit since he had been requesting things like that most of the week. When he said yes to bacon and eggs, my inner self said oh, no! But it turned out to be not so bad at all. I was more focused on the fact he was finally eating a decent amount of food.
I used to be a vegetarian, and vegan for a while, and I added back chicken first and then salmon and maybe once a year a BLT. Not until going lowcarb (now keto) did I get back to meat. Oh, what a journey it’s been
@Ian_Murphy - It’s not my recipe but @Brenda. There is a thread here somewhere about ketoade but since I’m not sure how to go find it and then link it here, I’ll copy the recipe. Others have some variations but this is Brenda’s:

this is great. So, I do want to do an extended fast as well. Did you do BPC everyday? Was it just once a day? and did it have MCT + butter?

I’m just wondering how I can get this to work best for me,and other people’s experiences help me build a program that may work best.

Congrats to you!! And thanks for sharing.

Thank you.

I did one bulletproof coffee each day. I make a pot of french press which yields about 32 ounces of coffee. I put about half in a mug and add 1 tablespoon of kerrygold butter and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and use a frother to blend. The next half gets 1 tablespoon of cream.
So in total I have 32 oz of coffee, 1 tablespoon each of butter, coconut oil, heavy whipping cream.
Good luck to you - I recommend just diving in. I am at day five now and planned to end the fast today at lunch but I’m still not hungry! I can hardly believe it myself. I may wait until dinner because I can’t decide what I want to eat.

I’m 50-ish hours into a planned 72 hour fast at the moment, and I’ve found the same thing: it’s easier than I thought!

I had 3 BPCs yesterday, basically around breakfast, lunch and dinner. Today, I had one at breakfast (which is my normal), and then I got busy at work and didn’t get time for “lunch”, and then got home and realised I wasn’t that fussed about “dinner” either.

However, I found I’m BUZZING with energy. I went for a run just to blow off some steam, and I’m a bit tired now.

I’m going to break my fast tomorrow night, about 20 hours to go.

I feel a lot thinner, like a thin guy trapped in a fatties body. My body certainly doesn’t look like I feel! I’m interested to see how I go with weight loss after this - I wasn’t “stalled” but wasn’t losing at a quick rate either.

I think this is definitely something I’ll do regularly - it’s hard to describe the feeling.

I agree - it’s hard to describe. I felt thin also, not like my stomach was empty and I was hungry, but just more lean. I plan to do more also and glad your experience has been as painless as mine.

Well, fast broken tonight. Went for 72 hours, again today I basically had a BPC at breakfast time and nothing else other than water all day. Was good to have a feed. Interested to see whether I knocked any weight off through the exercise, I’ll check in a day or two when things settle down.
