Does black coffee break an extended fast?

I have fasted for short periods before when not on keto and been a purist with water only. I’m almost 60 hours in to my first extended keto fast and have been drinking black coffee and was wondering if that interfered with the intent of keto related fasting.

I searched the forums but nothing clear and concise jumped out at me. This article I found summarized it well and thought I’d post a topic specifically on the subject for others that are new and curious about the same.

So I’m moving forward with the assumption that the moderate intake of black coffee actually aids some of the healthiest aspects of keto related fasting, e.g. autophagy, ketosis and hormesis.

I don’t think plain coffee or tea break fasts. But with added butter, creams and oils, it definately can.

Plain coffee or tea is absolutely not considered breaking a fast. There is some new research out there that coffee may possibly interrupt autophagy, but if that’s not your main purpose, then you’re good.

Two things I have learned from these forums:

  1. Coffee absolutely enhances ketosis.

  2. Coffee absolutely prevents ketosis.

 Dang… This is one of those unsettled things, then - I’d thought that if anything coffee boosted autophagy.

TL;DR
Lol. No doubt there is conflicting evidence out there.
Protein interrupts autophagy. Coffee has a small amount of protein, trace, so if autophagy is very very important to you, you might want to skip the coffee. Such as if you are a fasting because you have cancer. Then it becomes of paramount importance to make sure you remain in autophagy.

Autophagy and ketosis are two different things.

No way coffee interrupts ketosis.

Glad to hear it, Brenda! They’ll have to pry my coffee mug from my cold, dead hands, lol! :grinning:
