Diuresis Stopped And A Bunch of Other Things. Am I Still On Track With Keto?

Two days ago, I experienced excessive urination, which indicates an effective low carb diet compliance, which then suddenly stopped a day after. I initially lost 2-3 kg of water weight and now I’ve put on 1 kg back. I also had an upper (epigastric) stomach pain that had subsided after experiencing it for 3 days with excessive hunger for one day. The only remaining indication is the itching of my skin but even then, I don’t know if this is a sign of low carb compliance or just my brain tricking me into thinking I have this symptom since I don’t really have any lesions.

I had been drinking at least 2 liters of water for 3 days now (which could explain the disappearance of the stomach pain. I read that it’s due to dehydration). I ate questionable hot dogs (macros weren’t checked but could it be possible that it was laden with carb-rich fillers?). Or maybe, I’m consuming too much protein. It could also spike insulin levels.

Since starting 7 days ago, I’ve been religiously taking mct in the morning. As of now, I don’t really feel hunger anymore but because of my binge eating/bulimic history, I can’t eliminate eating more than my fair share even if I’m not hungry. Even then, I make sure my fiber intake is not neglected.

You can’t pee out all of your water forever. Eventually that stops.

Yes, they can be high in sugar and aren’t the best choice for meat.

This is debatable and you’re just starting out. Are you checking your blood sugar levels? It might help us help you if you gave us a snapshot of what you’re eating.

This is a helpful starter:

Keto is this easy (Keto for beloved noobs)

This is for Phase One - the starter phase. It’s still not complicated later, but this is the really easy to explain version which will help you no end.

  • Eat under 20g of carbs a day
  • Don’t worry about the scale
  • Eat plenty of good food - fat and protein - while adhering to 20g/carbs/day. Don’t worry too much about macros and calories EXCEPT carbs. Keep them below 20g/day. (Prioritize the protein - always start with protein in every meal, but don’t panic about it.) Your job is to get fat-adapted, so give your body the fuel you want it to use. Also, your appetite will vary - it’ll disappear, then it’ll come roaring back. Happens to most people, don’t sweat it.
  • ELECTROLYTES/SALT - KEEP THEM UP
  • Buy the meat you can afford - don’t stress about grass-fed, organic (con), etc… The worst meat is better than the best bread.
  • This site has a search function (magnifying glass at the top of the page) and a newbies section - use them both, you’ll get a better variety of answers to your questions far more quickly that way. SERIOUSLY, THIS IS VERY USEFUL.[1]

That’s as difficult as it needs to be for a couple of months.

My good friend Terence (being friends with a Kiwi feels kinda dirty, but there you have it, keto makes for strange bedfellows) tells me this thing I have described above is called “dirty keto.” So yeah, do dirty keto, kids!

When I got up at 5:30 and was rebooting my phone, this is what showed on the lockscreen…

Needless to say, it’s gone straight to the quips list.

That’s science, right there. Science for Merica.

The best way to measure low-carb compliance is to weigh your vegetables, etc., and calculate the digestible carbohydrate they contain. Alternatively, just weigh your vegetables and keep the total under the 20 g limit, and any other carbohydrate you get in your other food (dairy, the glycogen in meat, for example) will be sure to be under the limit. If you are eating only leafy greens and high-fiber cruciferous vegetables, this is a workable strategy.

A ketogenic diet is well-formulated when it primarily relies on fresh, whole foods. I enjoy sausages, but I check the list of ingredients for unwanted additions, and I haven’t eaten more than a handful of hot dogs in the past 24 months, because the alternatives are so much tastier.

While we excrete water at a faster rate in the absence of carbohydrate slowing down the kidneys, over-hydration can be a concern. Prof. Noakes, the sports physiologist, strongly recommends drinking to thirst and not beyond. Although he was the first to recommend hydration for athletes, he has had to revise his advice since the sports drink manufacturers started promoting excessive drinking. Prof. Noakes apologized to the first runner who ended up in hospital from over-hydration, and he warned at the time that people would die, if the trend continued. He was right; at least six athletes have died from excessive water intake since he issued his first warning. But it is very difficult to counter the efforts of a marketing juggernaut.

Do remember to keep your salt intake up, as you drink to thirst, because the kidneys also excrete sodium at a higher rate in the absence of carbohydrate. Several recent studies have shown the healthiest sodium intake to be between 4.0 and 6.0 g/day, which translates to 10-15 g of table salt (NaCl).

PetaMarie,I think you hit the nail on the head with your advice. And that is not Dirty Keto. Don’t let anyone food shame you for not eating organic, grass fed, overpriced, mail order meat. I knew people on Dirty Keto, it’s eating bad fats, fast food (burgers & fried chicken), processed foods like protein shakes/bars and filling up on fat bombs.
My advice:
Eat meat you can afford
read labels and avoid processed food/meats
Use healthy fats like avocado, coconut oil, real butter or olive oil
Don’t be afraid to get your greens
You Tube is a great place to learn more about Keto from some of the top Keto Doctors

I don’t think @PetaMarie said this, I think she’s quoting @juice

(Lonnie Hedley) #8

Wouldn’t let me quote in the other post.

It matters not, as long as people read it

Besides, if PetaMarie wants to sound not as smart as normal, she can quote me anytime

Exactly!
