Digestive issues and rashes

(Shromona Das) #1

So…one of my keto friends is doing an egg fast. I started as well. Surprisingly I’m terriblly bloated ever since, not being able to digest anything. Have recurring acidity problems, and terrible rashes. Checked if I respond to the C Reactivate Protein but the blood work suggests otherwise. Of course I’m eating salads and veggies again. It’s the bloating and the stomach irritation that I’m worried about. I can’t see a general physician. Most of them have never heard of keto. It’s very hot in India- it might also be due to the heat. I’m also binge eating hence guessing I’m not fat adapted. Any suggestions?

How long have you been Keto?

Stand in front of the mirror and stick out your tongue, is your tongue white?

(Jay AM) #3

I know you’re about to suggest something candida related, before you do, please check out my thread and show me the science on it? So far, no one has and I am interested.

As far as the original post, how long have you been keto? What did you do before keto? What were you eating besides eggs? How much were you eating? What are you eating now? How much water, sodium, potassium, and magnesium are you getting?

I’ve been doing it for 11 months now, have lost 25 KGS. I lost 30 KGS in total but gained back 5 KGS after Christmas and binge eating. I’ve been on and off of keto since. Which is tough because I’m plateaued at 45 KGS (I’m very petite) since December. Yes, my tongue is white. I’m either experiencing diarrhoea or constipation- either extremes.

I’ve been eating about 6 eggs, 4 oz of cheese and butter. Sometimes, salted peanuts (1-2 oz). I didn’t do anything before keto- it has been life changing. I’ve recently had Candida. Are these things related?

There is the potential that you are not fat adapted…
There is the potential (white tongue) that you have an excess bloom of candida, this would make the entire concept of Keto or Fasting rather interesting as in - as the candida dies off your body will be sheading the toxins and you could become a gaseous monster with the die off. A table spoon or two of Apple Cider Vinager for a week could make all the difference. Given your small size, be aware that any significant change is more likely to have a violent response from your body as you don’t have much buffer to help smooth things out.

The up and down of Keto as reflected in a rash will be extreme until the candida dies off. The candida craves sugar, as you avoid sugar the candida will fight to survive before it dies off.

(Jay AM) #7

How were you diagnosed with Candida? How long have you been on keto right now and when was the last time you went off?

(Shromona Das) #8

I have dropped 25 kgs with keto in the last 11 months. I actually lost 30 kgs, but gained back 5 kgs after Christmas. I have not been able to do keto peoper for the long run since- I’ve been on and off the wagon. I have been diagnosed with candida by my physician for the last four months. He suggested I keep my hands off of dairy and anything that tastes sweet. I did follow that for a month. But well…cheese. And i figured that erythritol nd stevia isn’t “sweet” sweet. But it has aggrevated and I’m always bloated and fatigued and acidic and hungry and when i eat I feel unwell and when i don’t I go crazy. I have started eyeballing my portions which is dangerous, I am eating too much whey protein (as of today) and I think I should fast all day tomorrow. It’s impossible doing so being around my boyfriend who is stick thin and has been stick thin all his life, eating candies and sweets and cakes. When we watch netflix together he usually has a bag of popcorns or nuts or something like that and munches on. It becomes impossible not to eat. I need a disciplined detox.

I know you said you’ve been keto a while but, if you haven’t been able to keep it up since, let’s assume you’re not keto often enough now. In which case, we can look at a few things like, what’s keeping you off the wagon in the first place. And, also, having excess gas can definitely be caused by going in and out of keto. Especially if going out means lots of carbs. Whey protein can also cause it. As can a few other things. Please post your average daily macros (in grams preferably) as well as average daily calories, age, height, weight, goals, electrolyte supplementation information. Let’s not worry about fasting or what you did before. This is a new day, week, month, and year of keto. Let’s look at it like you’re new and work from there.

I would believe that my constant falling off the waggon has coincided with my Candida infection.

I’m 23 years old, 5’2.5, 45 KGS (I was 40 KGS before Christmas). I started keto 11 months ago, at 70 kgs, recurring UTI and polycystic ovarian cysts.

I never eat too much carbs. Even when I say that I’ve fallen off, it means that I’ve eaten more than 20 net carbs a day. It wiggles between 20-60. Till December, I followed that 20 gms boundary very strictly.

I’ll send a snapshot of my app shortly.

I notice a difference in my body ever since I’ve stopped (been unable to) do IF. I’m not one of those people who can eat and snack keto food all day and lose weight. I’ve entered a maintaining phase. My belly increases and shrinks though the scale doesn’t move much. It’s probably due to the bloating, which has increased significantly since the candida infections have started drying up. It sounds gross, but it’s so irritating.

I live in India. In a little village. I don’t have access to most keto food such as fatty meats (beef, pork) avocados or nuts. Peanuts and almonds are all I get. All the cheese I get here are processed. I don’t get strawberries or berries. I don’t get organic butter. I’m allergic to ghee. I eat pasteurised butter. Olive oil. Mustard oil at times. Virgin coconut oil. That’s it. Yes, consider I’ve been off keto. How do I get in (more importantly, how do I stick to it)?

(Jay AM) #13

Alright, let’s start that you aren’t eating enough. Keto is not a calorie restricting way of eating. If you are hungry, you need to eat more fat. I’m not telling you to snack all day, we also don’t want to raise insulin all day. But, eating too low of calories causes how much energy you use in a day (basal metabolic rate or BMR) to go down. When that goes down, your body is adjusting to using energy at that level. If you eat less again, it’ll eventually continue going down until you reach a point where you can’t eat less and end up eating more and gaining weight back. You feel hungry, tired, sick, and this can also cause gas, bloating, digestive discomfort when you do eat enough again. Which might be happening when you’re going off keto.

Keto food is any low carb food you have access to. If it’s chicken and butter, slather that chicken in butter. Eggs, fowl, butter, some nuts, fish, coconut oil, olive oil, veggies. All keto. I’m sure you know of more keto friendly foods too. Processed cheese might not be excellent but, check the carb counts if it’s available and just watch them. Regular butter is fine. Do you know for sure you’re allergic to ghee? Ghee is just butter with the solids removed. People usually allergic to butter can use ghee. I’ve never heard of it backwards. But, that’s fine, butter is fine. Keto doesn’t need to be expensive or fancy. Your plan to get back and stay in keto is, eat more. Eat more fat. Use fat to feel full. If you are hungry, you didn’t get enough fat. Try 2-3 good meals a day. Do this for a few weeks and then feel free to add IF if you feel comfortable after that.

1274 kcal Daily Calorie Intake (this is a goal and it’s okay to go over)
20 g Carbs (6%, 80 kcal) (this is a limit)
63 g Protein (20%, 252 kcal) (try to hit this mostly, don’t go over too often)
105 g Fat (74%, 942 kcal) (eat this to satiety, you can go over or slightly under)

Thanks so much. Yes, I’m sure I’m allergic to ghee because I love it and I development gastric issues lately. If there’s even tiny bit of ghee in something, I won’t be able to digest it. Nobody has heard of it. Everyone I talked to freaked out as it has very little lactose as well. I’ll follow your chart from tomorrow onwards. I’m craving strangest things- like raw mangoes which I’m pretty sure are high in carbs. I heard of the keto cut- where they hit the macros right. As long as I lost weight successfully I didn’t count calories. I didn’t have a food scale. I just knew everything has carbs so I ate only keto clean food. What’s up with the whey protein I wonder. I also do HWC everyday but maybe that’s a bad idea while having Candida . the processed cheese we have here are very low in carbs- 2 GM per 100./

I gather you are not vegetarian, so that you can eat meat. Would it be possible for you to eat exclusively beef, goat, chicken, or lamb for a while? Are avocadoes available where you are? Coconuts? If you could possibly find enough fatty food to survive on while the Candida dies off, it would greatly benefit you. Once it’s gone, you could return to eating whatever dairy you can tolerate. Mind you, the die-off period is going to be unpleasant (it sounds as though you are already experiencing some of that), but in your situation I would be inclined to go through with it, because the yeast infection is worse in the long run. If you can just avoid all carbohydrate and the sugars found in dairy for long enough, the Candida will stop being a problem.

(Shromona Das) #16

I don’t get beef or pork where I live. I only eat those when I travel to the city. But I get mutton, chicken and eggs. No ducks or lamb either. No avocados. No macadamia or hazel nuts. But is it alright if I cut out cheese and do butter? I get coconut flakes, coconut oil. I get pomace and virgin olive oil as well.

(Shromona Das) #17

Yes, it’s very unpleasant. It’s also causing mood swings, eating disorder and whatnot.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #18

I’m really sorry you’re having to deal with this. Would some virtual bacon help encourage you? :bacon::bacon::bacon:

(Shromona Das) #19

Oh I love bacon!!! And I literally travel 3 hours by train to the city to eat them  thank you. It’s real sweet of you to send me virtual bacons. I was just wondering if I should be calculating my veggies within my NET carb limit.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #20

Just saw this question, and in case you are still hoping for an answer, net or total carbs is completely up to you. The advantage to keeping total carbs under the limit is that you can be absolutely sure the net is. Some people who are highly insulin-resistant find this helpful.

I personally believe I have a fairly high carb limit, but I try to keep carbs low anyway, because I am a sugar and carb addict. Every time I tell myself it’s safe to eat “just a bit” of the roll, or whatever, I always regret it, and I am running a serious risk of a major sugar binge in that situation. Believe it or not, I even have to be careful not to binge on cauliflower or broccoli!
