Did first IF today - keto breath

I’ve been low carb since the end of January and keto since about the end of February. I went through the induction stuff, carb withdrawl, keto breath, PISS and keto rash. Everything but the rash went away and it’s almost gone. I’ve lost considerable weight (~35lbs or so) and am losing about 3.5lbs/wk for the last three weeks.

Well last night/today I did an intermittent fast unintentionally. I got busy before work and had to decide do I eat or do I spin. I wasn’t "hungry so I spun for 350 calories like every other morning. Then I took a shower and got ready for work. During that time keto breath came back! So I guess I bumped my ketones higher than normal and have excess spillage into the blood. Do other people have this experience with their first IF?

I don’t know the science of what’s going on, but I haven’t had any keto breath while becoming fat adapted or while IF-ing, but what you suspect makes sense. Have you measured your ketones to see if they’re actually higher?

I do have a funny story, though – years ago when doing Atkins I had keto breath real bad. One night coming home from dinner a cop pulled us over. When I opened the passenger window, the cop waved the air and yelled “Whew!! Somebody’s been drinking!”

I explained to him I was low-carbing and had what was back then called Atkins Breath. He seemed to buy it and let us go.

Embarrassing as hell.

I haven’t purchased a gluco/keto meter yet. I have pee sticks but largely have abandoned them since listening to the ketone 2 keto dudes podcast. Pee stricks only measure one of the 3 ketones and the longer you do keto the less the ketones are being peed away. It bugs me to pay ~$2 per test for ketone blood monitoring. Since I’m dropping 3.5lbs/wk I figure all is well… If I stall/have a significant plateau I may use it as a tool… The most exciting for me is knowing that IF is no big deal!!! . I was worried about the depth of the hunger that I might have to battle. It’s been easy. I had a hunger kick in for a couple of minutes 20 minutes into my spin. I suspect my body told me to eat. When I didn’t my body gave up it increased fat processing resulting in more ketones and keto breath.

Yeah, I love that about IF too! You’re doing incredibly well.

Also, note that a few us (like me) still pee out ketones long after becoming fat adapted, so I’m still able to use the keto sticks. I agree those blood tests are way too pricy!
