fasting

(Jane Srygley) #101

You’re doing 72 hours 2 weeks in a row??? Wow! Good luck! I feel traumatized from my 76 hours LOL but I plan to do another one next month.

(Susan) #102

Yes, I am on vacation for 4 days a week for two weeks. I am tempted by carbage at work so often I am taking advantage of the time off in my own carb free house to do this.

Well, I discovered threatening myself with an early morning pool workout makes a brisk walk in the neighbourhood a very easy task.

25 hrs fasted. Going for about 47 hours. I’ll soon be able to bank sleep hours which is always bonus fasting time.

My hunger was not bad today. I expect tomorrow to be about the same.

BG

  • 8:30 am 14 hrs fasted 107 mg/dL
  • 11:00 am 16.5 hrs fasted 100 mg/dL
  • 6:30 pm 24 hrs fasted
    • 56 mg/dL right hand
    • 67 mg/dL left hand

I have no idea why it was so high this morning. But I’ll call the 24 hr number about 60 and that is great.

I’ll measure my BG a couple of times tomorrow.

My hands are cold. I think I’ll dress warmly tonight.

Happy fasting all.

I’m calling this another successful day.

I had to have a glucose tab because my blood sugar was getting a little whiffy, which proved to be a wise decision. Getting my medication synched up with my actual blood sugar is also a moving target. No actual hypos though, so I’m feeling pretty happy.

49 hours in. Feeling excellent. No hunger at all. I am not even thinking about what to end my fast with.
Went for a walk today in a light rain. Another day of vacation. I am lost without work, I miss the clients and looking after them. I also miss my grandkids. I will practice some mindfulness now and then go to sleep.

33 hours in fasting. Typical light fasting sleep with technicolor dreams. Was cold and I had old fashion long-johns on as well as a long sleeve t-shirt and sweatshirt.

Feeling good but not fully awake yet. I’m still planning on 47 hrs today. I think my elevated morning BG is a good reason to break my fasts in the afternoon so I have a better chance of being in some form of autophagy at the end of the fast.

BG immediately upon waking was 85 mg/dL. I still get the dawn effect I guess. But so much better than the 100+ of yesterday. I’ll take another BG this afternoon.

I hope everyone has a successful fast(s) this week.

Hey all so not sure if you saw my out-of-control-panicky-eating post, but I decided to fast today after all. I’ve been struggling with anxiety-triggered eating for 50 years and continue to struggle. I do think that the fasting may enhance the symptoms but I don’t believe they’re going anywhere. I think I will work on incorporating more meat protein on my eating days to produce that natural satiety.

The thing is, I’m actually really good at fasting and I love what it does for my body. I also love the break it gives me from eating decisions… so I think I will use my time on fasting days (when not working like I am right now) to figure out how to improve my eating windows… But yes, for today, I’m fasting and I’m really glad I’m doing it. I plan to break this fast at 4am tomorrow morning with coffee and collagen after 31 hours total. I was 1 lb down from yesterday this morning even after eating ALL DAY so I feel encouraged by that as well.

Started a fast after dinner last night, so only 16 hours in so far. A bit hungrier than usual but not surprising after indulging in Las Vegas over the weekend (my Dad’s 86th birthday).

Going for 60 hours this time as that fits my work schedule for this week.

(Susan) #110

Happy birthday to your dad. What a wonderful reason to indulge!

(Eric - The patient needs to be patient!) #111

Noon BG at about 41.5 hrs == 76 mg/dL

Will do one more right before I break. My BG seems to be all over the map. 107 yesterday high to last night low of 56. Not sure what to make if that.

I will break my fast in 4 hrs or so and an excited that I made it this far. A little hinger now but it is the lunch time belly signal.

Happy Fasting all.

(Cancer Fighting Ketovore :)) #112

That’s quite the drop in BG. Is that normal, according to your fasting patterns?

(Bob M) #113

A five day fast once a month for three months should not be too bad. You’ll get plenty of time to recover.

(Eric - The patient needs to be patient!) #114

The last 3 day fast I went to ~50 on day three and had to break. Felt weird.

I drink coffee in the am and it is higher in the am. But I also suffer the dawn effect. I may have to fast w/o coffee post holiday and see what happens. I’m considering giving up coffee for a few months to see if I can get rid of some loose skin. I see so much conflicting info on autophagy and coffee.

(Cancer Fighting Ketovore :)) #115

Maybe related to your hands being cold? Especially with the rise of BG later?

(Cancer Fighting Ketovore :)) #116

Anyway, congrats on your fast

(Eric - The patient needs to be patient!) #117

I’m assuming this was directed at me. I did 36 hrs last week. Will do 46 this week and then next two weeks, I might just do a OMAD or 2 here and there. Tomorrow I do Body by Science resistance training so I feast on fatty protein and collagen for lean muscle gains.

(Jane) #118

If autophagy is your goal for fasting then you might want to consider limiting your intake to just water. There is so little data on autophagy in humans but some of the data from mice indicates even a small amount of protein can stop autophagy. Since there is no way to test for autophagy the best approach is to not consume anything but water to be on the safe side.

I drink black coffee when I fast for autophagy but I am not trying to reverse a condition such as yours - just want to reduce the loose skin and it is working for me so far - albeit very slowly.

(Bob M) #119

I also drink black coffee and “black” green tea when fasting. While I don’t think this affects autophagy that much, it’s unclear whether it does. I’m trying for autophagy for heart failure, but the drugs I’m taking may also limit autophagy. I’ve also been limiting my 4-5 day fasts to only a few times per year now.

(Eric - The patient needs to be patient!) #120

Ended up at about 46 hrs at 72mg/dL BG. Higher than I would like. I felt fine and so far breaking the fast has been good. I think right now in my life a two day fast is perfect for me.

(Patricia) #121

The 46 hour fast I did a couple months ago was a water fast and I’ve read the various takes on what will or won’t trigger autophagy. I decided to try a DIY version (recommended by a functional medicine doc) that replicates the percentages of fat, carbs and protein in Dr. Valter Longo’s Pro-Lon / FMD protocol. Longo believes, based on his research, that this FMD basically convinces the body that it’s not receiving nutrients that would stop autophagy. I researched the protein in the recommendation, and it’s under 5 grams a day spread over 3 “meals”.

So, I decided to try the FMD this time, but I totally also understand your advice, @Janie, as it’s also what I’ve read in lots of places. But I’m experimenting with it.

I just concluded 102 hours and broke the FMD with a 1/2 cup of homemade bone broth and a tiny bit of sweet potato.

The past two nights and mornings, my pain symptoms have decreased. I don’t know if it was the fasting or another variable, but the pain level is tolerable and I’m not as stiff and semi-immobile when first getting out of bed. So I’m grateful for this.

I will see how things are tomorrow and in the days ahead. I may repeat this again in another month, as that’s what’s recommended, for up to three months in a row for conditions like mine.

Thanks for responding. I really appreciate the input!
